The gears cost $175.00 and installation labor was also $175.00 Is your truck 2wd or 4 wd???????? You have a 6 cylinder to, right? Geno, Yes, I6 and 2wd. I'm looking for a combination of nice ride quality with a semi-aggressive tread pattern (it spends about 95% of the time on pavement). Any advice or experience on different brands with the F-150 trucks? Jon, My personal preference are Goodyear Wranglers or B F Goodrich All Terrains. Aggressive tread, relatively quiet on the street and I've never gotten stuck with either. The AT's are a little cheaper too. They come in 31x10.5r15 or even 32x11.5 or 10.5 r15. I've got the former and my buddy has the latter size. The latter look even better than mine. I've owned 4 of them since 1980 and they all had the problem or soon developed it. Trying to "gorilla" it into and out of the 3 ranges can bend the shifter forks. The fork pads (or are they called dogs) can wear too. Anyway, if the forks don't pull evenly on both sides of the sliding clutch it can bind on the rear output shaft. It has a spring to assist it's movement (high/low) but it may not always work. For me, once I get it into 4X4, I have no probs with range changes. Only into and out of 4x4 give me grief. If jiggeling won't do it turning off the engine always works. Mine also grinds if I try shifting it in any direction with the tranny in neutral or drive, I believe all do. Never shift it unless stopped in park. The tranny will grind if you pop it into drive while the x-fer case is in neutral and try to put it back in park. I rebuilt mine after a retaining ring popped off leaving me with no high range in 2 or 4 wheel drive. I replaced several parts and the shift forks too. It shifted great for about 1 year and went back to hard shifting. That was 3 years ago. Unless you need 4x4 everyday and more than once per day I wouldn't waste the time or money fixing it. You will eventually have to change the front chain anyway so hold off till then. Phil In a message dated 98-06-01 12:32:22 EDT, toddrpm writes: >Snip put the truck in 4-low.
