My 95 GMC came with one on the front only, so I added a rear one to reduce understeer and rear body lean. My son's '88 4X F150 has none and we are looking for some bars to put on it. The street weeble, wobble and lurch that it does with no sway bars (new tires, shocks > etc) is not confidence inspiring. Having been away from the off-road scene for some time, I was not aware that some vehicle type groups (ie jeep) recommended taking them off. But I remember that Jeep was in a lot of trouble for their vehicle rolling over on the street (I had a CJ5 and that damn thing was dangerous!). So if you are going to do some very fancy once in a lifetime (gotta justify that new winch) crawl over the Rubicon trail, then you very well may want to disconnect sway bars to get more axle travel over rocks. BUT, how many of us ever go crawling over 2 and 3 foot high rocks in continuous repetitiveness? I belong to a competitive boat class, and we tow our 5500# boat/trailer rigs around. I sized my 302 F150 to tow this up and down California a couple of times a year and still get me excellent gas mileage on other days. I get 10 towing, 17 going to work and 20+ on the fwy. My 350ci GMC gets 8 or 9 towing the same rig. A friend with a heavy duty 88 or so F250 DIESEL gets 8 mpg under the same towing conditions. I imagine he goes up the hill faster than my 302, but not faster than my 350, as the 350 will maintain speed limit with the load on the hills I pull. Mine gets off-road abot 10% of the time, and the decreased articulation is no problem to me.I want to tow with this truck, and would take a little less body roll over suspension travel anyways. What are the specs on your truck? Thanks, >>>>>>> Humm, very good points on both sides of the issue. I have to replace one rear leaf spring (down to one leaf on the passenger side) before I can go and test out the sway bars disconnected offroad. I mostly use the truck as a daily driver, but I also do enjoy taking it up the logging roads and the back woods around here. It will take 10-12 weeks for the springs to get here, (if I can get them orederd on Monday). But I will try the driving on the highway with them off. For the offroad part, I have to wait. The specs are 1983 4x4 reg cab, 133 in wb. dana 60-2 (semi floater) and dana 44 IFS (not sure about the HD or not?) Good luck, Butch Davis- Actually, the sway bars wee Optional. They came as part of the handling package. My '91 F150 with Off-Road package did not have sway bars. Neither did my '80. My '95 does, though. = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 80-96-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 80-96-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 22:17:24 -0700 From: Paul Laughlin Subject: Re: FTE 80-96 - Engine swap woes, HELP!! To illlustrate just how this can work: My brother-in-law had just replaced the heads on a 390 ci in one of his wreckers. He had been trying to get it started for about four hours. I had been standing there for about an hour. My wife walked up, stood there for about five minutes and innocently asked if it had any gas in it. The brother-in-law started to make a smart remark, stopped, turned beet red and walked over to get a can of gas. Needless to say, after putting a couple of gallons of gas in, it it started right up. And the brother-in-law was a professional mechanic.
