This is a good idea. I did not suggest it because I thought you would be too cold up there in Alaska. When my heater began to leak a few years ago, I bypassed it. But it is warm here in Houston and I did not miss it. I eventually replaced it. The only potential "gotcha'" is you must loop the hose around from waterpump outlet back to the engine block. Do not just plug the two hoses off. When the thermostat is closed, the heater core allows a small mount of coolant to bypass and circulate, so that the block warms up evenly. - -- Jim Cannon Houston, Texas Listen to "Car Talk" on National Public Radio http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.msn.cartalk.com/ "Celebrating 10 Years of Bad Car Advice" = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 80-96-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 80-96-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 May 1998 15:20:35 -0700 From: "Scottie Schmidt" Subject: FTE 80-96 - F-250 Hi, about a month ago i posted a message asking what kind of truck would be good for a 15 acre farm. It looks that we definitly getting the farm now and that means we will definitly need a truck!!! From what you guys have said a Ford F-250 would be good. My grandfather who is buying the farm says that sounds good, my grandmother says that will be to big, but neither one of them hardly know what the difference is between a F-150 and a F-250. My questions are: Is a regular 2 door F-250 ok for a 15 acre farm (plan on raising alpacka, chickens, and maybe a couple other animals)??? My grandparents only want to pay less than $11,000 for the truck. They want it to be newer than a 92 and have less than 65,000 miles, is this possible??? Forwarded to all the lists for: From: Gary Callahan Please cc all replies to him! Thanks. I live in southern California and have been a member of this list for over six months now. I have enjoyed it very much. I have posted questions and replied to other postings. I have an idea I'd like to put forth for concideration. I think it would be great fun to get together with other members of this list for a weekend outing. I think we could pick one of the trips from Harry Lewellyn's "glovebox" book on backroad trips in southern California or if anyone knows of another good day trip in the area. I think it would be best to limit it to a one-day event for now. We could all meet at a predetermined location, drive the scenic backroads to a nice spot for a potluck lunch, then home a different route. Let me know what you all think of this idea. After all the Jeep owners have their Jeep Jamboree. Why can't we have a gathering as well. Send (or post) your thoughts to me soon, the summer will be over before you know it. For quickest response reply to my e-mail at work. You may even be able to get an XLT for that price but you might prefer an XL for farm use anyway. One thing I would suggest would be to try to find a truck with a limited slip rear differential. It help keep you from getting stuck when driving around a muddy field. Identity Crisis:-) Gentlemen, I have an 85 F-250 4x4 that I'm trying to figure out the particulars on.The info I've gotten off the net is somewhat confusing. The front differential tag is missing;so much for the easy route. The door tag gives me a GVWR of 8600 lbs, with an axle code G3.According to what I've read, vehicles below the 8600 are standard-duty 3/4 ton trucks with a Dana 44HD.Vehicles with a GVWR above 8600 are the 3/4 ton HD models, equipped with the Dana 50.Is this true? What if the GVWR is exactly 8600? I've got precious little printed fo on this truck to refute or confirm this info.Anybody got some reliable info they'd mind passing along. It seems like there is very little difference in the two, excepting the internals are a bit heavier in the Dana 50. I'd appreciate your comments.TIA Randy 94 Bronco EB85 F-250 4x4 = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 80-96-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 80-96-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 May 1998 10:38:02 -0400 From: Ken Payne Subject: FTE 80-96 - We Won! #1 Auto Site! One thing I > would suggest would be to try to find a truck with a limited slip rear > differential. It help keep you from getting stuck when driving around a > muddy field. I think there is one big place that Scottie can save money: the engine. A 351W is overkill for most agricultural uses. The 300cid I-6 is ideally suited to most farm use, and is plenty torquey for pulling tree stumps and such. If you're hauling a gooseneck cattle trailer or something that's a different story. Curious: Why the 92-up requirement? Mechanically an 87-up should be just about the same truck. The 92 is just a little different sheet- metal wise. I have an 87 that looks almost identical under the hood to a 94. That said, you can get an 87-ish truck for MUCH cheaper, partially because they weren't very pretty trucks (shaped roughly like a brick with about as many curves). Rather than the limited slip diff, I'd suggest budgeting extra money for tires and an ARB air locker. On an F250 4x4 you should be able to put 32" tires in there. If the truck is going to stay mostly on the farm, I'd get some mud terrain tires. All-terrains might be more tolerable if the truck will see a lot of street duty but won't be as "unstuckable" as mud terrains. The ARB air locker in the back will let you use 2WD 90% of the time and 4WD just to get unstuck or drive through the really sloppy stuff. I do definitely like the F250 over the F150 for farm use. It rides a little higher, and that extra ground clearance really helps (for example, my 87 F250 2WD is about as high as an F150 4WD). The 4WD model sits even higher. This is great for farm use because so often there are obstacles that require maximum ground clearance. Like when driving through a field, there is usually a pretty aggressive hike up going in and drop off coming out. Additionally, the load capacity is great. Throw 1500 pounds of feed in the back of an F250 and all it does is make it handle better on the road (and slow it down a little). In an F150 the bed will sag and handling will suffer. Also, look for the cheaper "working class" trucks. Vinyl bench seat, no carpet (maybe a rubber mat), manual windows & locks... this is the kind of truck that you can go out and clean the chicken coop, and then get back in the truck without worrying about it getting dirty. - -- Chris Hedemark - chris "From the fury of the Norsemen, oh Lord, deliver us!" = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 80-96-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 80-96-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 11:53:48 -0400 From: "Chapman, David P" Subject: RE: FTE 80-96 - We Won! #1 Auto Site!
