I would like a copy of that article too please. I am getting ready to do the
disc brake swap listed in the tech section and I am replacing the kingpins
while I have them out. The first time I did this swap, I ruined 3 heads for
my air chisel, caught the brake line on fire (trying to heat the kingpin up
to slide it out easier) and ruined the spindle in the process. About 200
bucks worth of new parts by the time I finished replacing the kingpins (oh
yeah I heated the spindle up so much that it softened the spring and I had
to replace it too.) Oh well live and learn huh.

That is a consideration.  If I did charge, I'd be a whole lot
more savvy than that.  I'd give everyone read rights and posting
rights would belong only to those who pay.  But... I'm not
planning on charging for the lists so its moot.

Nope, ain't going to happen here.  Never has.  I will say
this much, there is a former advertiser that I would make
strong statements >>>against<<< if asked about them.  I
don't take kindly to being used as an advertising forum
and not having invoices paid... to the tune of $400.00.  If
they can't pay me, would you trust them with your order?

I have no plans to charge for the list.  As to merging, there are
no plans for that.  FTE is not on the "for sale" nor "merge" course!
I'll stop the suspense.... we're starting another site that sells
literature, decals and t-shirts for all classic Fords.

The URL is www.motorhaven.com but right now it points to FTE.
Additionally, we're about to bring a bunch of new products and
accessories online for newer truck owners in the current store.

Yeah, I've dumped thousands (took at $42K loss in 2000) into the
site, put myself and my family into huge debt that will take
a long time to pay off, blew all our savings and spent all my time
maintaining the site for your selfish butt to enjoy.  Make a buck
indeed!  You've got a lot of nerve.

If you enjoy Yahoo and Excite so much, why not leave FTE and see

How bad do you want to get rid of it?  How much is it worth to you to get it
out of the way?  This argument can go back and forth many times like this
but you have to draw a line somewhere.  If advertisers are not allowed to
*list things on the "Free" *list then subscribers should not either IMNSHO.
There is a philosophical difference, I agree but there is no practical
difference, they are both trying to make a buck by selling something.  We
talked about setting up a booth at Pigeon Forge for the group to sell stuff
and manning it with volunteers.  Should that also be free?  Who pays for the
booth site?  How much time do we allot each member who is selling something
to man the booth?  How many do you suppose would try to get their stuff in
there and not put in any time in the booth?

What about the clutter in the *list every one complains about?  Off topic
right?  When it all started it only cost a few dollars a month to have a
site for the small *list of friends but it caught on and grew and Ken was
obligated to expand to keep it alive which he did....and did.....and did
untill his full time job was the *list and he had to find time to go to work
to support his family.  He had to make a choice, give it all up to get his
time with family back or go for broke and do it full time.  Everyone on the
list at the time applauded his effort to save the list because they all
thought it was worth something.  Now when he is asking people to express
their appreciation with a few dollars for a service which provides true
value what are we seeing?  I think it's pretty sad myself :-(

The neat thing about the Want adds is that it is all ford stuff and is
searchable and the info stays up till the item is sold for all to see, you
can't accidentally delete it.  If you go looking for something you don't
have to subscribe to a bunch of mail lists to see all the stuff for sale,
you can go to a place once and look and not have to keep deleting mail to do
it.  Some people like that and many who go there are not on any of the
lists, you don't have to "Log In" AFAIK.  That's the way the Forums work too
but you do have to log in to post to them which keeps the spam under
control.

What it really comes down to is a matter of respect for a person who has
sacrificed much to provide this list site.

It's a very small thing he's asking.  I remember my first BB gun.  Saved and
Saved for what seemed like an eternity then ordered it from Sears for $4.18
including $0.38 shipping.  I'll never forget those numbers because it was a
very important event in my life.  That was a relatively small price to pay
even back then, what is it now?

will gladly contribute some "keep afloat" money to help the family if you

your pride or make you feel like you are taking hand outs but we don't want
you to suffer hardship on our account either.  Call it a token gift of
appreciation for what you've done so far if you must.  Just say it's ok and
give us and address and I think you will be surprised with the response. (I
already have your address but won't send anything til you say "OK")

From: Brett L Habben <bhabben juno.com>

Kyle,
This is largely from memory, so anybody jump in and correct me where I'm
wrong.  240 and 300 pistons have different compression heights, so are
also not interchangeable.  Early 240 and 300's had .9122" piston pins,
changed to .9752" around '69.  I think that there were two different
pitch timing sets used, and don't remember if the difference was due to
the displacement or age, but are interchangeable as a set.  240's have 69
cc combustion chamber heads, 300's are 76cc.  Somewhere in the late 80's
the 300 combustion chambers got changed from a standard "D" shape to a
more efficient heart shape.  My head rebuilder told me to keep my earlier
300 heads, though, claiming that they are less likely to crack.   I used
the cheap Federal Mogul hypereutectic pistons, but have since been
advised that that was not such a good idea.  Evidently, the
hypereutectics are brittle, and cannot not tolerate detonation or other
abuse as was advertised.  Cast pistons are fine.
After I bought my '79 300 I discovered that there are LOTS of junk 300's
laying around here in Austin.  You could probably pick one up for free if
you beat the bushes (or transverse Ben White on a regular basis but
that's a whole 'nuther story).  Look behind shops that do repair on your
typical beater commercial vehicle; ie pickups and vans.
Holler for more info, such as hop up tips.

Ken, I for one am in line with Gary & Darrell, the resources this list
provides for it's members is invaluable, let alone for the measly price of
$25.00.  I know you said that you meant the list to be free, as they are one
of the core features of FTE and you vowed to keep them free, but as the new
policy for classified ads show, the free lunch on the Internet is over.  I
have been lurking here for the last 2 years, and have seen enough knowledge
pass across my screen to fill a set of books worth far more than the simple
amount above.  I wish you would reconsider any pending change in FTE,
especially if the change is to merge with another site, as the hint in your
e-mail made me think might be fixing to happen.  The unique Ford Truck
atmosphere here is part of what makes this list and site special to all of
us who read them on a regular basis.  Either way, and all else aside, I
still want to thank you personally for creating this forum, and for the
enjoyment of a hobby it has brought me.

I dont think you quite understand what Ken and Peggy are going through in
order for us to have this wonderful list.  that "buck" you refer to is there
lively hood.  Without money from advertisers, sales and other things from
this web, they dont get paychecks.  Please rethink your stand on this issue.

I'm going to 2nd this.  I was going to write this directly to you, but I
figured here is as good a place as any.  If you could send me an address to
mail a check, or give me an acct# for deposit to an account, I want to donate
some $$ to FTE.  These lists have not only saved me countless dollars and
prevented me from wasted hours chasing problems, but after having met you
folks I considered you friends.  Then my very close friend died, and this
list helped his wife and kids get through a very rough holiday.  This list
helped his wife in the emotional side of it as well.  Having lost her husband
in a town she had just moved to, devoid of friends, we proved that good
people are out there.  Thinking about that still brings tears to my eyes, its
still hard to believe that hes gone.  But now you and Peggy have proved that
were not just friends, we're all family.  I really hope you'll let me do this
for you.

Thanks

Ken, as you said, tons of sites are dropping like flies, but this isnt only
happening on the internet. our whole economy is slowing, and thats going to
cause people to get real greedy. I really love FTE and all the people here,
but being in the computer industry too, I have really been feeling the
effects of this slowdown and cant afford to buy anything. But if there is
some way I can support FTE without spending money, let me/us know, im sure
lots of people would be interested in helping out. Sorry for straying off

I'm sorry, it's not there anymore for some reason.  It also might have been
on Steve's personal site.

The concept was well described in an earlier post and could be easily
replicated from that description.

Hi All ,,

Even though the milk price has been at a 20 yr. low ( 70 yr. low if you
figure cost of living :-(  ) ... I'll pay a 25.00 membership .

This list saves me more than 25.00 yr. and the listers are a whole lot
smarter ( and polite ) than the "book smart parts idiot" at the local
dlrship .

Let us help out

Hmmm......

Apologies may be due to any who felt that I might have been attempting to sell
something on this list without paying adequate "dues" to whomever it may
concern to place it in the classifieds. I didn't know the classifieds charged
money for that, nor did I know that it was such a sensitive topic of
discussion. The conversation has been good though!

Seriously, my extra 240 is free to a good home.  I don't want to make money off
it as much as I like for a good Ford engine not to rust away in a junkyard. A
tranny and clutch comes with it. What I'd really like in return is just
confirmation that all I need to convert a 240 to a 300 is a different crank and
connecting rods. :)

I heard mention of the following:

>Talkcity is pretty neat but I can't stand all the banners and trying to
>converse with people in a tiny screen the size of a postage stamp because they
>are "trying to make a buck".

I don't know if there's an IRC (chat) service out there that caters
specifically to Ford trucks, but I'm willing to offer a spot.  Just grab your
favorite IRC client (go to www.mirc.com if you don't have one) and point it to
turbodog.outergrid.net and join the channel called #ford and there you may chat
away about our favorite topic, sans banners.  It's an IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
server that's free and always will be, provided my me and several other
folks. All y'all are welcome.

Shouldn't have to. If everyone who is looking for similar items
would check FTE, they would see Ken has some of the best prices
around.  Manuals on CD-ROM, print manuals, and other lit items are just a
couple of examples that come to mind. Who out there doesn't like to save
money? Even if it is a couple of bucks. With this disease I call FTF (Ford
Truck Fever) those couple of bucks start to add up.
I was going to post a similar message after the results of the
recent survey. The # of people who purchase from FTE was a little
surprising to me.

Sounds like "need to know" information.

Well, duhhh. Fundamental economics. I'm sure Ken considered this before
making his decision. Any time you increase the price of any commodity or
service, generally the volume sold decreases.

Ken has helped me way beyond ordinary service over the years. I'm not a big
buyer of products or services from FTE. The only thing I buy is my mailing
address as I was a list member when Ken first started offering this service.
People I deal with KNOW my e-mail address. How do you put a value on name
recognition? Where is this going? I'm not sure, but I hope whatever Ken
decides to do works for FTE and I for one will support him.

Yeah, Ken's greedy. I remember when Deacon's house burned down, when
Darrell's friend passed away, then there was a young man needing a
laptop....I'm sure there are many more instances that I'm not aware of.
Yeah, Ken's greedy..Too bad we aren't all greedy like Ken.

Subject: Fuel tank sending unit?

Does anyone have a spare fuel-tank sending unit that will fit the side
tank on my '79 F-350?  I think its the 19-gallon variety.  We've narrowed
the problem down to the sending unit since if we ground the wires, the
guage goes to full like you'd expect.  Any other suggestions on how to get
this to work or is replacing it the best option?

BTW it should be inspected today.  I'm supposed to pick it up later with
those nice stickers on the windsheild!  :-)

Is anyone else not getting email from the list for the past couple days or
is it just me?  (I just had to re-subscribe for some reason...)  That's
strange?????
