If the grill goes all the way across with one bar and a few big teeth, it's a '51 or '52. From the vin I would guess the second digit '1' would indicate '51. I've got to watch Air Force One tonight but may have time to try it later on. The kit case is pretty nice but not sure if it's really worth $18. As for the rest of it time will tell I guess. Sure doesn't seem like very much for a $98 investment. I'm not sure where they are located as I don't have a phone book but they should be in the Calhoun, Etawoh, and Talladega County area. One of these places. I live in N. Al. 1 mile south of the Tn. The primary reason is cost and difficulty in finding parts. I am building a 360 into a standard 428 (not a CJ or Cobra Jet) and have had to spend quite a bit of time finding parts such as the crank (pretty rare) and a special flywheel. Since I have a couple of years to put it together piece by piece, its not too big of a deal. I'm thinking it will pay off though, since I won't be going with the CJ parts, it should really be a "stroked" 390. The toughest part for me now is trying figure out exactly what type of cylinder heads to go with to get the torque.... Anyway, I've had two or three 390's in my 69 F-100 4x4 over the the last 20 years, and not only are they reliable, if you make the modifications that Dan suggests, it will have plenty of power for a reasonable price.... If you are bound and determined to go with the 428, send me a message and I can give you a few more details of what you need to do...(at least what I know of so far....) Good Luck! I found a truck not sure of the year. I think its between 1948 to 1952 F1 could anyone tell me what year FORD put a FLATHEAD V8 in this truck ? I would like to know what year this truck is ? Flathead V8's were optional in Ford trucks from somewhere around 1938 thru the 1953 models. In '49 the distributor changed from a box looking device located in the front of the engine to a distributor looking device located on top of the engine.(can't remember if it was in the front or the rear, but I'm thinking it was in the rear) This might help in determining what years it could be. Any suggestions or input will be much appreciated. Thanks!! Don't mean to "bust your buble", but the 428 and the 390 blocks are not the same. They are the same family. FE family. The 390 has a bore size of 4.050", and the 428 bore is 4.030'. Most 390's will not bore this additional .080". Some will, but not all. I've bored at least 3 into the water jacket trying to get to 4.130". I've also had 2 that made it with enough meat to spare to be reliable performance engines. Everything else remains constant, I believe. If you still want to pursue this, ask the list again. There are some very knowledgeable folks here on the FE's. as well as all FOMOCO engines. Anyway, I have been thinking about putting a dana 60 in the front of my 78 Bronco. My original plan was to use rad arm mounts off an old dana 44 front I have and weld them to Dana 60 front. I would then cut off spring pads. I have been warned that Dana 60 front is too heavy for coil spring susp, but I'm going to try it anyway. I have also been told that my 1/2 ton steering will almost bolt up to the knuckles on the dana 60 front. Does anyone have any thoughts on using the whole 1/2 ton steering with 1 ton front axle? Will tie rods bolt up? What else do you think I will need? I'm not afraid of fabricating some parts. I live on the Central Coast of CA (near San Luis Obispo), but don't hold that against me as my wife and I are moving to CO within the year. I still drive (not daily) a 1971 F-250 which I bought new in 1970 when I was 18 years old. 92K miles now, original paint, and as much fun to drive as it was then--actually more fun now and that it what this posting is about... I wanted to respond to Carey's posting about performance improvements for the 390. Several years ago, I removed the 300+change CFM Autolite two-barrel and very heavy cast-iron intake manifold and replaced it with an Edelbrock Performer (not the Performer Plus version) and a Holley 4150, manual choke, 600 CFM four-barrel. That alone made my truck into a completely different machine, much more fun to drive. Total cost about $400 if you buy the parts through Summit Racing Equipment (www.summitracing.com) and do the installation yourself. It's almost a two person job getting that h-e-a-v-y cast-iron intake out of the engine compartment! Since then, I've added one of the new Mallory electronic ignition distributors (about $200--Summit), which relieves me of worrying about point and timing changes e-v-e-r! They do sell an aftermarket module (don't know what brand, but a friend bought one at a Napa store) that fits within your stock Ford distributor and converts it to electronic, but it's almost as expensive and distributor bushings tend to get worn at 100K+ miles. Now, I'm on a quest to let the engine get rid of the burnt stuff a bit better...I've had dual exhausts for years as the Ford single exhaust on the 390s tended to cause a burnt valve situation...Can speak from my own experience as I've had this truck 27 years now! Recently bought a set of 428CJ exhaust manifolds, which will not bolt directly to the stock 390 heads. However, those heads are pretty restrictive anyway, and I intend to slap a set of 428 CJ heads onto my block. A direct bolt-on and they will (many friends have done this) really perk up the performance to another level. Those heads go for between $350 and $600 depending on how many times they've been surfaced--one definitely doesn't want to raise the compression level too much these days on the gas we get! FelPro makes different thicknesses in head gaskets and a head that hasn't been surfaced more than twice shouldn't bring the compression up past 10.25 at the most. The stock truck 390 had 9.0 or 9.5, I believe. One of these days I'll have the long block done, but it's not time yet it still runs too tight. Anyway, that's been my quest for increased performance and driveability. If anyone can set me straight or offer any better suggestions, even sell me a set of those heads, I'll certainly welcome hearing from you. I used the van parts down to the dana 44 tie rod and the tapered pins were smaller on the van so I used an appropriate thickness of shim to wrap around the pin so it would seat properly in the dana tie rod hole. 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 1998 17:23:25 EST From: JRFiero Subject: Re: 1969 302 Engine Code In a message dated 98-02-12 22:26:08 EST, you write: >I need the engine code for the 69 model year for the 302 engine >I'm in the final part of my web site and need the code for the date >plate decoder >Joe 302 code for '69 is G >> According to the Red Book, G is correct for F Series and Bronco. I did not expect that much of a response for the problem that I was having. Thank You! Needless to say these two listservs have a lot of great people that are willing to help out in the drop of a dime! Once again thanks and have a great weekend. p.s. I also found out that not only did the machine shop loose the tube, but they put the rocker assembly on upside down! I will never take them another engine again because not only did they screw up then, but they put the heads on backward, install the wrong freeze plugs, and improperly installed the camshaft. The other post said 239 inch V8, which is correct, but in later years there were also overhead 239s. This one should be a flathead. The following post from Azie is correct that the VIN format changed in Sept '51, but various sources say Sept 1, Sept 4 and September 15. Model years were the same as Calendar years back then, so '52 production didn't start till 1952, and would be F1R2. If you can get to the data plate on the inside of the glovebox (if its still there), the production code will tell you exactly what date it was produced. But it is a '51 from the number you gave.
