Another shop said something about 'offset >camber bolts'? Had no idea what he was talking about. Help. Yes, bending the I-beams is one way of setting the camber. However, lot's of things can cause the camber to be wrong, including front springs and kingpin bushings. My '71 F100 ate the inside edges of tires like candy when I got it and You could see visually that the camber was way off! Several people suggested bending the I-beams to fix it. Once I'd replaced the kingpins and rubber suspension bushings and replaced the shot front springs so the truck sat at the correct height my problems went away. I definately would *not* have the I-beams bent until I was sure everything else is in good order. Unless the beams have somehow become bent or damaged already, having them bent to correct camber is only masking other problems which when fixed will cause camber to be all wrong again. The project itself is quite worthwhile, you will get a whole mess more power out of the motor. But, what kind of carburetor do you intend on running? marko ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Feb 1998 22:27:04 EST From: BDIJXS Subject: Re: FE Manifolds and Carbs Hi Guys, Just a little note from somebody who has been down the road with the 390 manifold swap....I ended up with the Edelbrock Performer (dual plane) and the Edelbrock 600 carb....I ran two types of Holleys for a long time, a 650 spreadbore and then a 600 vacuum secondaries.... I never could (neither could several mechanics) get the things dialed in correctly throughout the power range. The Edelbrock carb solved ALL of these problems....It pulls clean everywhere, especially that dreaded midrange where the Holley vaccuum secondaries would never come on line at the right time. A 780 Holley sounds too big...Everyone I talked to recommended a 600 CFM. The Edelbrock has the secondary petals opening manually, and then a counter-balanced air valve allows in as much air as is required....a much slicker system it looks (and runs) like...One last plug for the Edelbrock, there are no gaskets below the fuel line (= no possibility for leaks) and the fuel metering rods are very easy to change. Main jets require a little more work (remove the top of the carb), but you should be able to dial in pretty close with the metering rods (you'll need to buy the little kit from Edelbrock for a selection of rods and jets). Be sure if you go with the Edelbrock manifold to remove the stock alignment pin located in the top of the block (vice grips can be used to pull it out). If you forget to do this and try to tighten the new manifold down, you will probably ruin it....this is noted in the directions with the manifold also...it just looks like it could be easy to forget. Also, the advise of chucking the cork gaskets on the front and back is definitely good, just use a bunch of that ol' blue silicone. Finish off the installation with a good K&N air filter...I went with the 14" x 4" size. Its expensive at first, but you shouldn't have to ever buy another air filter. You might want to pick a book by Vizard named "Building Horsepower, Volume 2". He experimentally demonstrates the huge advantage of the K&N stuff.... Thats all I can think of for now....you won't be sorry you went this way...
