Wait a minute! I remember drag racing in an alfalpha field one day
and hitting a rock the size of an engine block at about 50
and...............................course brakes wouldn't have done
any good there :-)

Actually, Deacon, Oh wise one and full of spirit, our leader, my
mentor.....there is such a word:

spelled lackadaisical, an adjective, means showing little or no interest or
spirit, listless.....I feel this word does not apply to you as you are full
of sprirt
and not listless, you are on the fordnatics list as well as FTE mailing list!
I personally like the word too......just can't find a good reason to use it
in context.

Some Ford truck content - McDonalds on the net is an NOS dealer of Ford
parts that have been obsoleted for years. Marko told me about them last
week and they have proven to be a great source for parts I thought had been
out of production and out of the public eye for many years. They've
located several NOS parts I have been searching for for quite a while.
I think they helped Marko get some obsolete stuff too. They have a website,
just can't remember what it is.....I'll look and send it if interested.

AMSOIL makes synthetics for absolutely every application including
two heavy trans lube weight ranges for varying applications and with
their catalog you can order the stuff and have it shipped within a
few days. I just got my case of 0W30 series 2000 and it only took 4
days to get it from the catalog. They have local dealers too but
they tend to be home garage type businesses. If you can locate one
near you it may work out that he'll have the stuff you want in stock.

you are not going to find synthetics on the shelf except for an
occasional Mobil 1 or Red line 10W30 here and there. I try to keep
at least a case ahead for topping off and emergencys anyway so
ordering it isn't a problem for me.

If I understand their hype correctly they are the first company to
develop and sell synthetics to the public, commercially and the
science is based on military turbine engine research so has a very
solid back ground tested under the most trying circumstances etc..

I'm taking some wild guesses here but the first thing that comes to
mind is the engine and chassis grounds. If the battery ground cable
is not in good condition there may not be enough wire to carry the
load and if the chassis ground is bad part of the ground for the
starter can go through the alternator or generator wiring and
this inadequate ground causes a serious voltage drop so amperage is
increased dramatically causing the heat etc.. Because you say the
battery is not holding up this points me in this direction too
because this condition limits the ability to charge the battery as
well.

The next most likely thing is start relay or ignition switch not
working correctly. Since the starter has no power when the relay is
off there is no way for it to run on unless the ignition switch is
bad or the relay is bad. If the relay contacts are damaged the
voltage would drop again causing high amperage and thus heat and
could hang causing the starter to run on. The two above conditions
will eventually destroy the stater as well and when you get these
fixed you may still have to replace it as it may already be damaged
from over amperage (heat). The old starter armatures are soldered
with a high temp solder (higher than store stuff) but it still can be
melted out if the starter gets hot enough

The last thing I would suspect with the list of symptoms you posted
is the starter but it's always a possibility that there are more than
one item at fault. If the battery wires jump when you hit the start
switch there is probably a dead short in the starter or the bad
ground is elevating the amperage to very high levels.

It is relatively cheap i think. We get them through a company called

Subject: New 70 F100 owner questions

Hi All

I am the new owner of a 1970 F100 short bed stepside. It has had a
long and glorious career as a logging truck, cross-country love-mobile
(don't ask!) and more recently, a back-and-forth across the yard mulch
hauler. I got it from my father because my mother was sick of looking
at it. It has the 300 ci 6 cyl and four-speed floor shifter, with
unknown miles (odo just turned over, I'm guessing 2nd time).

Things I have done:

1) Cleaned it! Yuck, the mold was really bad.
2) Air cleaner - had none, this chrome beauty easily adds several hp.
3) Tires - the recaps were getting really scary.
4) New(er) front bumper with OVERRIDERS! - the old one had a run-in
with a San Francisco Trolley Car.
5) Manifold gasket - now the oncoming drivers scatter when they SEE
me, rather than HEAR me coming.

Things I still need to do:

1) Fuse Box - Someone has previously wired a horn button to the lower
right hand fuse, (and mounted it under the dash - how the heck am I
supposed to hit that thing when I'm panicking!) I think it's the brake
light fuse (Yikes! the brake lights were working, but so was the horn
until recently). When I tried to change the blown fuse, the rusted
contacts disintegrated. Does anyone make a reproduction or have a NOS
source for this? I have searched high and low unsuccessfully. Or is it
easy enough to get a generic fuse box or one from a later model?

2) Horn - The original horn button is there, with the spring inside,
but I didn't see any contact switch or wires coming from the steering
column. How is this supposed to work? Is this supposed to run through
the same fuse as the brake lights as an alert that the brake lights
aren't working? Also, is there supposed to be a horn relay? Where is
it located?

3) Shifter bushings - my kids love watching the shifter swing from
side to side when I go around a curve, but I'm tired of huntin' &
grindin'. Is this easily accessable from the cab by taking off the
boot, or do I have to do more to get at it?

4) Fuel gauge - There used to be two fuel tanks, now only one behind
the seat. The current gauge is wired to a plug under the dash, but it
just ends! I traced the circuit behind the gauge cluster, and it looks
like the fuel gauge connects to a purple wire at the gauge cluster
plug. Where is the other end of that wire supposed to be? I can't find
it!

5) Service manual - anyone have a good source for a service manual.
I'm fairly handy but basically a backyard knuckle-buster.

Sorry for the bandwidth, but I'm new to this and have lots of
questions. This is a GREAT TRUCK! TIA for any info/insights.

Yep. I've seen both Castrol and I believe Mobil 1 in the local Western
Aut/Parts America, so I would imagine that most parts stores have it
on the shelf.

they will also set you up as a dealer if you buy a certain amount a year.
amsoil is a MLM company, that is there so you can buy cheap, not build
other peoples wallets. they were the first to sell synth to the public and
also possible the first hioghly succesful MLM business. i get mine at cost
from my cousin who got his "dealership" just so we could get the oil
cheaper.

Craig, you have the right idea, look at the book and see if there is a
access plate that encompasses the shifter boot and about 2/3 of the
tranny hump. If there is... remove the plate and there is the top of the
tranny at least that is what I have on my 66 F100. Problem is that I
don't know if there was a change during model years. Guys????

I know they make a Cable Lubricating Tool for Throttle and Clutch Cables

I've used mine on all manner of cables. Just get a spray can of
chain lube or some such with the little tube to fit the hole in the
adapter and off you go :-) Some cables have stuff in the way so they
can be tough to access but where there's a will................

What about redline synthetics? According to the guys on the SVT list it
is great stuff and not too expensive either.

here that have the exhaust in front of the rear wheel they looked real good
and still had a great sound.

i have not used it myself, but have no doubt that is similiar to amsoil in
quality. i feel that the differences in the top sunthetics (amsoil,
mobilo, redline) are very small and will be unnoticable. i buy mobil, and
amsoil, depending price basically asa mobil 1 is on sale at the stores
sometimes cheaper than amsoil.
