To add to the advice Gary and others gave; You will need the bell-housing from the 460 trans, as there is a difference between the ones used for the big block 460 and the FE block 360. (I have considered this kind of swap in the F250 HD 4x2 that is awaiting repairs in my yard ... maybe I'll just find a 400 and put a 4V manifold on it.) Also, if the carb on your 360 is a 2V and not a 4V, you will want to get a 4V carb for your 460. == B. I followed some advice I found in the archives and changed the plastic gear where the speedometer cable connects to the transmission, and now it shows the correct speed. I knew the speedometer was reading high, but I had to find out how high. Over the holidays I drove 200 miles (based on the mile markers) to my parents house, but my odometer showed 220, or 10% high. I removed the plastic gear at the end of the speedometer cable on the transmission and counted the number of teeth (16). I needed 10% more teeth, but the Ford dealer was out of gears with 17.6 teeth ;-) so I bought one with 18 teeth. The new plastic gear looked shorter than the old one, but it fit fine and now I have a working speedometer (okay, it's around 2% off, but I can live with 1 mph off at 50 mph). If anyone needs a perfectly fine plastic gear with 16 teeth for a C6 transmission, I'll send you my old one for free. You may need to take the whole "I" beam assy but then you just need to modify the pin hole or replace the brackets with the newer ones. Should be pretty straight forward. > > resto on the truck, but would like to give it some height... so, > > does anyone know if they make a lift kit for the old Twin I-beam > > suspensions??? Lengthening the springs will change the camber so the beams will have to be bent (not a good option) by a competent shop or drop brackets will be required (best option IMHO). Don't know off hand if anyone makes them since 2wd lifts are very scarce and not supported well in the industry but a good fab/welder should be able to set something up if you give him the old brackets to work with. (cut the rivits and pop them out so you don't damage the brackets. I use a torch to cut the heads off then touch them up with a grinder if I have access and use an air hammer to punch them out. Ok Guy's.... I've been running into some "fun" stuff lately. I know there's a few of you out there who have done these things before so maybe you can help me solve the headaches!! First off, I am changing from a 400 to a 460 in my '64 F100. When I bought the truck the engine compartment was totally bare. The former owner of the truck had blown the 400 up and removed it. I had the 460 from a former truck and thought it would ad a great touch to the truck. The installation is a challenge, as I have found that lots of things don't work like you plan. I am in need of assistance with a radiator. I've found that the one that was in it is bad, plus its pretty small. What radiator should I look for ? even the one that was in it looks to be very tight with the 460. I've moved the 460 back to the fire wall to make room for the front pulley assembly to clear the front of the frame (leaving about 2" of clearance) I set the radiator in place and tried the fan just to see what type of clearance i had and it was pretty scary! Do I need to use a electric fan ? Or is there a radiator that will work fine with a regular stock type fan assembly ?? Also I seem to be having trouble finding headers to fit, does anyone have this conversion with headers that can tell me what you've used ?? Or do i need to go with stock manifolds? I tried a set of L&L headers I had from a 79' 460 swap, the passenger side was fine, but the drivers side hit the steering pitman arm and drag link assembly. these headers were a style that goes through the wheel wells and not inside the frame rails. the steering is still the stock manual type. I've tried stans headers, no luck...I've tried some local shops here in the Twin Cities...but no one has anything, they all have stuff for the older 50's models. Thanks in advance for your support . It was a great car with rust straight thru the bumpers, and was on its 3d engine. I was dumbfounded. I'd be driving down the highway and all of a sudden the thing would lurch and miss and it was just horrible. After replacing most of the ignition (at a cost greater than the entire car, I might add!!) and fuel system, I noticed that the fuel line was dinged by a rock in one spot and had a pinhole in it. Replacing the fuel line fixed the problem. It sounds like you have a fuel system aeration/pressurization problem. Is you gas cap properly vented? IMHO the ranking of trucks based on beauty alone, is: 1 1956 ford big window 2 73-79 ford (no stepsides though) 3 94-98 dodge ram 4 any mid 70's to 93 dodge, especially the power wagons. but for daily driving, my new truck (is 94 still considered new?) is fantastic. it can do the work of my old trucks ever did and still give me the comfort of a luxury car. i do have to admit, after building old trucks, and buying new, i will NEVER BUY A NEW TRUCK AGAIN!! i'll buy a used truck, put as much into as i payed for it, and have a great truck for half the cost of a new one. there are two different attitudes. the new truck owners tend to bolt, tape or other wise attatch things to their truck all over the place creating an aftermarket lund advertisement. then, most older truck owners (the truck, not the owner) fix it, build it better, make it faster, better handling, or whatever. and then the new truck owners complain about all the things that make trucks what they are. like gas mileage, ride quality, just as an example. some of us are lucky to have a new and old truck. but for me, if i had to choose i think i'd keep the old ones!! ok, i'm finished not talking about anything. sleddog - ---------- From: Gary, 78 BBB[SMTP:gpeters3 Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 1998 6:29 AM To: fordtrucks61-79 Subject: Re: ADMIN, list subscriptions? > From: "Dave Resch" > Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 12:30:46 -0700 > Subject: Re: ADMIN, list subscriptions? > I am subscribed to both this list and the '80-up list. (In fact, other than its There are "Wheelers" and "Hot Roders" and then there's your "Low Riders" and "Suv's" and they usually don't belong on the same lists. I want my wheeler to look good but it's definitely not a low rider and I won't be putting much plastic on it so the tech stuff is what interests me. My daughter has a 97 she can't afford but she's constantly thinking about how to fix it up??? How do you "fix up" a $25000 vehicle you're making $450 payments on? I'm trying to "fix up" a $3000 vehicle I will be making $350 payments on for the next year and then she's all mine :-))))) I make a heck of a lot more money than she does but still can't justify a new truck. Not that I'd want a plastic/aluminum/electronic toy that some call a truck anyway. Iron and steel and 460's, that's a truck Ooogh Ooogh Oooooooooooooooooogh :-) Shrinking? Naaaaaaa, just weeding out :-) Where's Murphy when you really need him?? - -- Gary -- +-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ | Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 | List removal information is on the web site. | +---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 10:35:25 -0800 From: Gregg Park Subject: '77 F150-351 Overtemp/Headgsket I=92ve been subscribed for about 2 weeks or so, and I can just tell you this; I=92ve learned more in a few weeks of reading this list than anywhere else, that=92s for sure. And the gracious help I=92ve = received from members is literally inspiring. Enough of the mush, though. Let me tell you guys where I=92m at in the continuing adventures of my = =9277 F150-351M. =20 It now looks as though I do have a bad head gasket, resulting in the overheating. Compression test showed cylinders #1 and #2 (the two closest to the alternator) at about 125lbs. All others tested at 150. A leak down test brought both the 130=92s up to 200, but a 150 cylinder = went up to 240, whatever that means. Anyway, after the compression test, = and the plugs were back in, I was again checking the timing. Lo and behold, I began to see water vapor upon pulling off the oil filler cap. Now I see water in the oil. So, I=92ve decided to go ahead and pull = the heads off.=20 One interesting thing to note is that during the timing check, I....
