I've been running the one speed Dana (21 I think?) out of a 74 with an NP manual trans with granny low, again, out of a 74. My question is, am I pretty safe with assuming that the two trannys will be the same, at least the same output shaft? I picked up the adapter housing out of the 77, looks like it will bolt right up to my 74 tranny. I don't know my NP trannys that well, were they basically all the same model (435 I think?) Here's what the tag says on the 77 tranny: D7TA7 D03 RB 435 (I'm pretty sure that 6th character is a "D", but it may be a "0" or "O"). Below this number was: 9 15 76 (the date I think) FL 141... Since this 74 tranny I have is an almost new Ford rebuilt unit, the little ID tag is missing, but I would like to continue to use it, its just now getting broken in... One other slight difference (I think) is the speedometer cables. The cable for the 77 came out of the transfer case, I think my 74 setup has it coming out of the tranny. I'll double-check this this weekend. If this is true, I just have to plug the hole on the transfer case... Has anyone done this kind of update? I'm hoping I won't have to change the cross-member as well....most likely have to re-route one of the exhausts, though... Thanks! This is the best of the best (at least for - -> the 351s). Too bad Ford never put it in a production vehicle. By the time the SVO motor went into production there were several companies tooled up to make forged or billet 351C cranks, plus the racing teams who would be buying the SVO blocks already had a sizeable investment in 351C cranks sitting right in the shop. It was a reasonable adjustment to make the block take the Cleveland-size crank, considering it was a unique casting anyway. ==dave.williams I've got a secret / I've been hiding / under my skin / | Who are you? my heart is human / my blood is boiling / my brain IBM | who, who? ====================================http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://home1.gte.net/42/index.htm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Mar 1998 00:12:39 CST From: "Harry Jennings" Subject: Re: 500 hp and 20 mpg In a recent issue of Car Craft the held their annual Real Streat Eliminators. I've been reading for a few months, just about all of my questions have been answered by now. I feel like I know all the regulars here pretty well - Hey deacon, I see your on your stool in the corner again. Is that stool a woodie? Hi Steve D. (briefly looks up from computer, hey), Don, we must be neighbors - Jeff's '64 Crew cab intrigues me, I saw an early crew cab in Santa Rosa (CA) a few weeks ago - flatbed. Who is that in the corner, holding a couple gallons of milk? Must be Marko. Trying to trade milk for headers again. Mushroom clouds on the horizon - Ahh, somebody drove a Che** by Stu's house. Gary, Azie, Sleddog, is there ANYTHING you guy's don't know about Ford Trucks? I have a 1970 F-250 Crew cab, 360 / T-18 / Custom cab. Thinking about restoring, or at least a well deserved preservation effort, in particular paint. Previous owner had Mira*l* apply white over the original red, now it looks like it has a bad case of the measles. At only 130k, the 360 is still kind of tired (you mean it's not getting better?) and the 460/C6 (76 Mercasauris wagon) in the driveway is lookin good. Previous truck was a '68 F-100 ranger, 390/C6, loved that truck but it just didn't do well with a cabover camper, wife, two kids, weeks worth of food and favorite adult beverages aboard. Sold it at 196k miles, still going strong. Anyway, enough about me for now. Back to the real discussions. Pat Brown Sebastopol, CA '70 F250 '94 T-bird (Wife's ride) '83 280 ZX (Daughter's. Since it's on the stand, don't forget to open up the hole where the oil enters the block from the pump to a 1/2 inch hole. This is a standard rebuild thing, but often overlooked. The factory sized hole is woefully too small. I believe it's a stock 3/8 inch. MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE TO GET ALL THE DRILL SHAVINGS OUT!!! Even if it means disassembling the entire engine to flush out the galleries. This is best done before the engine goes to the hot tank in the first place. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 22:22:34 -0800 From: Pat Brown Subject: RE: 67/73 steering gear Hi Dana, My '68 F-100 had a slow leak in the PS box (Bendix integral) turn into a quart a week (At least!). After replacing all the seals - - the hardest part was finding them, Bendix being a footnote in the parts catalog, it still leaked. Turned out to be an o-ring on the input shaft / valve torsion bar. It looked like it was leaking out the middle of the input shaft, because it was. After discovering this, the repair manual said 'No further disassembly can be done'. Figuring I needed a new one anyway, I pressed the assembly apart, put in a 10 cent o-ring, pressed everything back together, it worked fine. I don't have anything to back this up with but my understanding as to why SVO used the 351C crank was the smaller dia crank main bearings thus less resistance = higher performance and there was no high strength 351W crank at that time. HELP!!! Okay, as you know I'm building a 67 mercury pu body on a 71 f250 4x4 chassis, total resto, chemical strip etc. I am putting the 71 body (rusty but solid) on the 67 mercury 2wd running gear for a shop truck. I am almost done, but have a PROBLEM! I had to swap steering columns. The mercury had the old style two plugs from the column, the 71 ford has a single plug. I THOUGHT I marked all the wires carefully, drew diagrams, and carefully popped the wires out of the plugs, and put the wires in I THOUGHT the proper slots in the 71 plug which goes into the 71 cab in which the 67 column now sits. I plugged everything back in. Now, to my amazement, when you put on the right signal the horn sounds. I guess I won't be hitting any pedestrians stepping off the curb!! Seriously, if someone on the list has wired a turn signal switch, or even owns a 71 pickup and could just unplug the darn thing and tell me what color wire goes where on the plug, I would REALLY appreciate it. And I'm off to the shop at 9am pacific tomorrow so if you easterners could do it I'd be doubly grateful. Please look at the plug that is attached to the column wiring. There is a pin that sticks out on this plug. Please look at the side where the wires go IN to the plug, not the side of the plug where the little male end connectors are.....
