Unfortunately Ganahl only lists specs for the 390's that are highest up the food chain, 9.5-10.5:1 comp early sedan FE's, no truck FE's. The low compression truck FE's have a shorter piston height but I don't know the numbers. Gahnal lists a range of 1.676" to 1.842 for the FE family.(352-428) Connecting rods may be 6.488" (390-428) or 6.540" for 352 and (I think) 360. >Second question, does any FE block have a taller deck height than a 390? I've looked in my Christ book, but its not there. The guy says they are for a 428. Anyone have another parts reference they can look at? I was assuming that one would want 428 heads while building a 428. But maybe my 360 heads would do the trick, just have them cleaned up to match my manifold? It appears that many of the 360-428 heads (at least the casting #'s!) are the same.... The water seems to be coming down the firewall on the left side near the high beam switch and down the kick panel near the firewall on the right side. most of the water enters when the truck is parked. Any thoughts? I have done the following to eliminate the leaks: 1) Taped over the cowl vent 2) replaced the windshield seal 3) replaced the door seals The only places left are the rain gutter and hood / firewall. The hood hinges are weak so the hood sits high in the rear so there is a gap between the body and the hood. I have looked at the firewall and cant find any obvious holes or bad grommets. The leaking water was bad before but now that I have new door seals the water cant flow out the door, so every time it rains I get a water fall when I open the door! (or at least never meant to) yes, bounce is there, but when pushed hard into the "red zone" the action of the valve relative to the lobe on the camshaft shows that the valvetrain can't accelerate fast enough to keep up with the lobe. at this point, the vlave and lobe become "disconnected". the lifter will most likely come back to the base circle of the cam, with full valve closer, and then the valve bounces off the seat. the bounce can happen even when the cam lobe is followed properly. i have in truck pulling and drag racing seen (heard) some engines experience valveflaot lightly, but continue to increase rpms. this would be the bouncing part. as the rpms got higher, then the valvefloat became very pronounced. (usually ending up with a hole in the piston or in the case of the last motor i saw, the valve head off of the stem, and a hole in the cylinder) it would seem that the bouncing generally doesn't cause mechanical interference, but the interference occurs when the valve no longer follows the lobe accurately. this is the information i have been taught and read. i have been wrong before, and if i am i stand corrected. many of the liturauture i have is published from the 30's to the 60's, as i inherited them from my grandfather, where much knowledge cam directly from him. he designed, and helped design many engines over his years, from ball valve engines to junkers aircraft engines to motorcycle racing engines, including 2 and 4 stoke, gas and deisel types. as an engineer i know know that over the years understanding of mechanical motion still continues and new understanding always brings new explainations. some things never change, but new technology is amazing. only 20 yrs ago valvespring materials couldn't handle the loads subjected to them now. spring design is even a specialty all its own. sleddog It is a widely held misconception that the valve simply skips along the top of the lobe never closing during "float". If you had springs weak enough to do that you would be experiencing the bouncing effect at low to moderate rpms. +-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ | Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 | List removal information is on the web site. | +---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Feb 1998 10:48:11 -0700 From: Keith Srb Subject: RE: "Floating a Valve" At 01:03 PM 2/8/98 -0500, you wrote: >end my speling is treriblely bad. >buy me books and send me to school and i still can't spell. > Kids, You buy'm books, and all they do is tear the cover off and eat the pages. :-) >sleddog > >---------- >From: Jeff[SMTP:sifu >Sent: Saturday, February 07, 1998 11:14 PM >To: fordtrucks61-79 >Subject: Re: "Floating a Valve" > > > >Sleddog wrote: > >> yes, you are both right. when the valve doesn't follow the load, and >> "floats", it returns to the seat suddenly and bounces back off. baouce can >> happen without float, but float will always (AFAIK) cuase a bounce too. >> >> sleddog >> > >Sleddog, > >Your wisdom is as Soloman's... > >Jeff > > >+-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ >| Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 >| List removal information is on the web site. | >+---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ > > > >+-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ >| Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 >| List removal information is on the web site. | >+---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ > Keith Srb herbie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Feb 1998 11:02:56 -0700 From: Keith Srb Subject: Re: Turn Signal Switch At 11:56 AM 2/8/98 EST, you wrote: > Did the 66 f100 switch have a spring to turn it off after you have made a >turn. Mine does not and I dont know if it even has one. Thanks for any info. > > > Thanks, Eddie No it does not have a spring. Underneath your steering wheel is a piece of plastic that is attached to the turn signal switch. on the underneath side of the steering wheel is a small tooth. When you use your turn signal, the plastic moves into a position that allows the tooth in the steering wheel to catch this piece of plastic and turn the turn signal off. This piece of plastic is broken, so the tooth can no longer reach the plastic piece and turn the signals off. If you were to pull your steeling wheel off, you could see this better than I can explain it. In order to get your turn signals working again you would have to buy a replacement turn signal cam, I think that is what it is called. Then you would have to pull the old cam out, cut all of the wires off the old cam and attach the wires from the new cam to the wiring harness. You can also buy a new cam with full length wires that would allow you to unplug the turn signal from the wiring harness. Pull all of these wires up through the steering column. Then you would have to fish the new wires down the column and plug them into the rest of the wiring harness. Not much fun, but I have done it before on my 66. I got a new cam from Ford, About $50 two years ago. Hope this helps a little anyway. later Keith Srb herbie Mesa, AZ http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://members.netvalue.net/herbie/ 1986 Ford Bronco II, 2.9L (I HATE LITERS) V-6, Mitsubishi 5-Speed. 1980 Harley Davidson, XLH, Rebuilt from the frame up. 1974 Ford F250 Ranger XLT, Camper Special, 390ci 4bbl, Automatic, Long Box, Style Side. 1966 Ford F100, 240 C.I. Subject: [none] First of all, thanks to everyone for the info on the 70 camper special. I am still talking price with the owner. I had a couple other stupid questions though. I have a 1970 F150 RangerXLT. The previous owner had used the truck without the tail gate for many years. When I bought the truck I immediately put the tail gate back on. Unfortunately, the box is sprung a bit and the tailgate wont shut correctly. Using a rope and tire iron I got it shut. It has been like that for six months now. I was just curious if the box will ever go back or any other suggestions anyone has. I also had a question from my brother about his car. He was just curious if anyone knew offhand what his car actually sold for new in 1973 from the dealer. It is a 1973 Ford Ranchero GT, 351C Motor, A/C, P/S. If anyone recalls I would like to know. Thanks in advance for any help.
