I believe I started this mess regarding carb sizes, I installed the manifold and carb today, put a eldelbrock performer manifold and 600 carb in a 302, seems to run, tomorrow I'll take it out on the Freeway, its got real quick response and seems like no dead spot , but tomorrow will tell.. Mike in Seattle was about 65 Degree and Sunny today ! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 00:13:31 EST From: GMPACHECO Subject: Re: Vent windows. Mike in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Feb 1998 20:22:52 -0800 From: Thomas Hogan Subject: 390FE Specifications Would someone please post the following info for a 390FE motor? 1) Cylinder Block Deck Height 2) Piston Compression Height The year I'm interested in is 1976 but I don't think there will be any difference in these specs from year to year. Second question, does any FE block have a taller deck height than a 390? Many thanks in advance. That makes for 10:1 compression! >> Cool! >> >> Happy motoring, >> >> Steve >My software strikes again. It also has a compression calculator. What's up with that? 4.050" x 3.984" = 10.287cm x 10.119cm = 841cc cylinder volume. 841 + 92.7 / 92.7 = 10.072:1 compression ratio. How come my math don't equal Yer math? On my '73 truck 390 I run a .490"/465" 218/228 assembled it I checked the valve/piston clearance with clay. It was about 1/4" !! Cheers, Doug ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 02:38:20 EST From: Bzysignl Subject: The 351M Gilligans Adventure Continues Gary and Dan- I looked at the heads long and hard, cause I cleaned them like crazy, tore all the valves out and wire wheeled them. The compression check before tear-down showed numbers 1/2 to be at ~125, with the rest at 150. Motor never puffed white smoke at all. Didn't use any coolant either. WEIRD. The water is (WAS) showing up in my crank case breather. I did have a little bubbling in my radiator water. No exhaust smell. Is some bubbling normal, or is all bubbling mean you done got a blown something or a cracked something? Anyway, I had someone tell me that you can get a good amount of condensation from the PCV system going berserk. I hope that's where the water was coming from. I did what is probably sacrilege to many members of this list, which was to buy a can of STOPLEAK (There, I said it! Forgive me!!!) Either one of two things; either the moisture on my valve cover undersides and filler cap was coming from this crazed PCV system coupled with the moist CA weather, OR the stop leak plugged up whatever hole I had where ever I had it. The dude is running cool, and is slated for a trip to the lake tomorrow. There is a third possibility. Jesus did turn water into wine, and I did pray. That's actually is my favorite possibility. Thanks guys, and enjoy the rest of your weekend- Gregg = Greg, = Did you look at the heads at all when you had them off? The M =series was prone to cracking near the valve chamber. I`ve seen this happen =on them when you take the heads off to do a valve job. Seems that they =ake a set when they clamp them at the factory and run the hot and cold =cycle over the years. When you unbolt them they may or may not crack. Also =did you notice if the motor was puffing white smoke while it was running? =this would indcate that water was getting in from a crack or a blown =gasket. Look at the rad cap while it is running to see if the fluid is =bubbling in side. This will indcate a crack or blown gasket also. = Garry - - --- On Fri, 6 Feb 1998 23:06:50 EST Bzysignl =Gregg, = =Did you try a compression test? Relieve all the pressure on the =cooling system and look for low cylinders. If your engine has ever =overheated in the past you may have a warped or cracked head.....
