If I put in a bore of 4.050, a stroke of 3.984, flat top pistons, a deck height of .010 (as big as it will go), and a "standard" head gasket thickness of .033 here is what I get: Head gasket volume of 6.97cc CC volume of 92.70 and a final compression of 9.12. The M series was prone to cracking near the valve chamber. I`ve seen this happen on them when you take the heads off to do a valve job. Seems that they take a set when they clamp them at the factory and run the hot and cold cycle over the years. When you unbolt them they may or may not crack. Also did you notice if the motor was puffing white smoke while it was running? this would indcate that water was getting in from a crack or a blown gasket. Look at the rad cap while it is running to see if the fluid is bubbling in side. This will indcate a crack or blown gasket also. I Went to the junk yard today to find an overdrive tranny for my '78 F150 (302 w/3 spd manual). Found a '73 F100 with a 352 and a weird 4 speed behind it. The VIN code said it was supposed to have a 360. So it's not the original motor - so there is a chance it's not the original transmission either. The 4 speed was not a toploader - well not exactly. The shifter was on the top - on the left side. The shifter went into a box looking thing on the side of the transmission. The reverse was in the upper left corner, neutral, 1st and 2nd, neutral, 3rd and 4th. It's not like the old 3 speeds with the linkage on the side - the shifter was on the top - left side. No linkage was exposed. R--| 1 3 --------- 2 4 I hope this cheap diagram shows right. I wrote down the info on the tag from the transmission: RUG DB CA 13 EOTRAB 2499 Thanks in advance for any help. Also, I don't know much about 352 motors, but does it have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the small blocks (302/351)? Do you know of anyone who has done this? I never heard of it, but then there's a lot I haven't heard of:-). Another consideration, other that out and out failure, would be overheating. Especially if you're using a hot cam. Those paper thin walls will heat up the coolant real fast. I don't know what to tell you for a minimum wall thickness. If I ever knew, I've forgotten by now:-).
