Here is a "work-around" that is reliable. Take a manual flywheel from any other FE engine (360/390' are the most common) and your 428 auto flywheel to any reputable automotive machine shop and tell them to balance the manual to the Auto. They should be able to do this for $40. or less. ( I usually give $25. to get 460's done, and they all should be approx the same.) Oh yes - the price I give includes "surfacing" the manual also. >>Unfortunately, I have a manual transmission.....guess the one for the automatic won't work, eh? A classic case of either one of two things: accelerator pump too lean and vacuum advance not functioning properly. Since you are already working on the carburators accelerator pump I asumme you knew that one. With the ignition off, look down the throat of the carb and fully open the butterfly. You should see a very good stream of raw gas being expelled into the throttle bores through small tubes. If the stream is not good then most likely this is your problem. (I know you said you have a new/rebuilt carb, but check it out) I've found that the accelerator pumps tend not to operate correctly on lots of carbs just out of the box. If the problem persists, then make sure your vacuum lines are correct, and test the vacuum diaphram on the dist. for leaks and proper operation. Keep us posted and we can help you out. If I > were you I would go with a 750. I hope you guys are understanding that this is at 7k rpm, not 1800?? How many of us will be running 7k rpm? My 460 has a 600 on it and gets up to 90 pretty easily but is only running about 3k rpm and in second which is how I usually get to 90 it's only running about 4800 - - 4900 rpm, 5k tops. Personally I don't want to go much faster than that on the high way. I've run Ply****h's with 318's and single barrel carbs you could hardly get your fingers into at 100 mph with room to spare. CFM? Lots less than 600 I can assure you. Now if you have typical 3.50 gears with 235 tires (as above) the rpms will be higher, 3800 in high and 5700 - 5800 in second. Now we are approaching a need for a 750 or larger carb..............:-) A mostly stock engine can't flow that much air no matter what carb you put on it so the big holes in the top of the engine just make metering much harder to control which is where all the huge flat spots just off idle usually come from with big carbs. This very problem is what prompted the VV carb but it's too hard to keep properly balanced so has it's own problems. Most European cars and virtually all motorcycles have VV carbs of one type or another to keep them crisp at all rpms. The next closest thing is the metering rod type carb like Edlebrock and Rochester. Holleys are just holes in the top of the engine IMHO but work very well at 7k rpm :-) Where's Murphy when you really need him?? - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Feb 1998 10:04:24 -0500 From: Sleddog Subject: RE: extra! extra! read all about it 1999 f-series uncovered still doesn't look as beautiful as the 53-56 and 73-79 fords. sleddog - ---------- From: ECampb5214 Sent: Wednesday, February 04, 1998 7:43 AM To: fordtrucks61-79 Subject: extra! extra! read all about it 1999 f-series uncovered Hey all Off-Road magazine just did a 3 page story bout the 99 heavy duty f-series. Robert Mitchum (Gosh that name sounds awfully familiar) says it was also a designator for some 427 offerings, as well as some convertibles. I don't doubt it, but was not aware of the 427 ever being referred to by FOMOCO as 7 liter, nor of the convertible offering. It was a very swift car for its 5000# weight. Exactly and the reason is that the torque peak of an engine is theoretically the place where it achieves highest volumetric efficiency. The point where you are burning the most fuel mix at the highest cylinder pressure per cycle is going to pruduce the most push against the pistion top which in turn is going to produce the most force against the crank throw which is what torque is. This point is almost always the point in the rpm range where the engine is pulling in as much mix per cycle as can be done with any given setup. The trick for max torque is to have a carb which will not hinder this process. For max power you also need more flow at higher rpms since, even though efficiency goes down, mix flow through the carb goes up due to more cycles in the same time frame so we have to have something larger than just for max torque which happens at a lower rpm......... > recommend 'smalled is better'. If you ever want to pull a boat up a > boat ramp, you need excellent throttle response. Throttle response Throttle response can only be improved with improved "Metering" which is what suffers when you put big carbs on little engines. Smaller venturies improve the response time through greater sensitivity to small changes in pressure for better metering control which is why the spread bore is probably the next best thing to injection for efficiency........:-) (All truckers should be running spreadbores IMNSHO) Right on Dan! :-) Where's Murphy when you really need him?? - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Feb 1998 10:56:54 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: 66 67 Ford 7 liters > Date: Tue, 03 Feb 1998 22:04:05 -0600 > From: "Dennis K. You should get the correct spec for the pressure plate but the bell housing and tranny to bellhousing aren't as important IMHO. 5/16 grade 8's are good for about 25#, 3/8 about 40#, 7/16 maybe 55# in general but the clutch pressure plate will be where it can do some damage if the bolts come out or break so I'd get the spec and just get the others tight by feel if you can't find a spec on them. YOu should bear in mind that they come in three different lengths I think, being stock spec, short, and long. Your engine will have all of one kind, i.e. all long, all short, or all stock spec. C-6's coming out of a truck with two piece drive shaft will not have a slip yoke at the tranny nor will 4x4's but 2wd trucks and cars all do. I've gone to the junk yard and picked up cores to make drive shafts out of for projects and did the cutting and welding myself but they never quite come out balanced and getting them straight is tricky too. All C-6's have the same slip spline output shaft that use that type so any shaft from a C-6 application using the slip spline at the tranny should serve as a core to make one from. If you pick one up at a junk yard check for wear grooves on the outer surface where the seal rides and when you get home slip in on to check for excessive slop before spending money on the mods. If it wobbles around in the tranny it may just be the bushing in the tail shaft or the yoke could be too badly worn. I'd change the bushing and seal just as a precaution and then check the fit. Last thing to do is run new tranny lines and adapt the linkage, getting so close to the test drive. One more question though...should the modulator valve on the tranny be hooked up to the carb vacuum or should I use a port in the intake ?? Is there special backspacing/caliper grinding required or is it totally out of the question?? I've read articles about these on newer trucks and they claim to have to grind a little here and there but that's with cast wheels. I think with steel wheels you may be ok but not sure. Even the 4x4 version has a short tail shaft that "slips" into the transfer case so even it doesn't really have a bolted yoke, the transfer case does. I forgot what you were doing now? Ok, it wasn't you it was Brian, just went and checked my deleted mail but still not sure what Brian did to need a new drive shaft.
