Power valve causes excessive "Rich" condition, not lean, accellerator pump may be too large or small for application, Holleys have several sizes available. Vacuum leak, vacuum leak, vacuum leak, maybe. Power valve may be too high or low for application and last the main jets will affect the mid range, off idle range so can't be over looked either. Idle adjustment is a good place to start since it doesn't cost anything and can have a dramatic affect on the idle up accelleration performance. Give us a holler if you don't knwo how to do this. Holleys typically have a flat spot just above idle under load and it's very difficult to get it out without causing some other performance problem which is one reason I plan to defect to Edelbrock on my next adventure :-) Where's Murphy when you really need him?? - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 11:32:37 -0500 From: am14 Subject: Pop & hesitation Dustin: What carberator?????? Been doing this all my life but would never have attempted what you did below! EVER! I blew myself up a couple of summers ago burning a brush pile because I let myself get distracted but the fact is you still have to have a 15:1 ratio by weight for it to explode and it's pretty dang finiky about this ratio as most of us who are attempting to tune our ill performing vehicles can attest. In a garage size room it takes a lot of gas fumes to do that so I don't worry about it too much but make an effort to keep the fumes to a minimum for my own peace of mind :-) Such things as paint thinner can be even worse than gas and don't work nearly as well as degreasers. Acetone is one of the more dangerous ones I can think of right now due to being in the "fast" solvent class. I've use that for cleaning too but I ventilate very well when I use stuff like that. I periodically aired the garage out too when I was preparing to run equipment etc.. > put a little gas on it then all of the paper would burn. I'm sure OSHA will agree with you but most of us don't have access to other solvents which work so well or they are very expensive or you have to buy 55 gallons at a time. I little care and common sense works wonders here. I don't smoke and I don't run equipment when working with gas, it's just common sense. My Granddad OTOH smoked and ran equipment all his 75 active years and never even had a close call so go figure. I'm not advocating this BTW and I'm not really arguing with you, I actually agree with your sentiments and would like very much to have something available which is safer to use, is easily available in small quantities, inexpensive AND STILL DOES THE SAME JOB :-) I'm all ears now for the suggestions which meet these criteria :-) Please note where I put the main emphasis :-) Where's Murphy when you really need him?? - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 12:24:48 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: Rear Bearings > Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 14:10:36 -0800 > From: james oxley > Subject: Re: Rear Bearings > >Technically all a bearing needs is a thin film of moly lube to > >protect it from metal to metal contact so all that needs packing is > >the bearing. > > I thought dana 60 rear (rear) bearings were lubed by the diff oil. > > There is no seal to keep oil from going down to bearings. The 68 car heads might be some hi perf types, with different bolt pattern for the exhaust, or smaller combustion chambers. This is rare, but possible. If they are hi perf types they are nice to have. You can always get a custom flange made for headers to fit the exhaust bolt pattern. The crank is in all cases the same for a 390. The block is also the same. By using the stock replacement listed piston you shouldn't end up with too much compression for today's gas. Look for the casting numbers on the heads and post them. These numbers (for a '68 should be C8XX-X or something. The casting number is between #2 and #3 spark plug on the head. As for the price, it's pretty good but since you're buying engine parts and not the whole thing, somebody's had it apart. This means that something has been done to it probly. The motor wouldna come apart if it was good. So determine what was good/bad. $150 isn't too much to gamble on a motor. Get the rods too, as they are different between 352/360 and 390. Here's a question. Hot Rod magazine has been running articles about building long rod (not stroke) motors with high compression (about 11.0:1) claiming more power and the ability to run on 87 octane pump gas. So far they have featured a 350 of questionable heritage (GM) and a Ford 351W. Would this be possible to do with the FE family? They have used special pistons with shorter compression heights to allow the longer rod to fit. They were shooting for close to 2.0:1.0 rod/stroke ratio. Where could I get the critical dimensions to put a project like this together? I've always believed that if I could up the compression I could make the engine more efficient. That coupled with a 2.75:1 rear and a wide ratio C6 should add up to improved mileage. Just bench racing but does anyone have other ideas? Hello: I just receive an email from a gentleman looking for an oilpan with the sump in the rear for a 390 FE. Can someone tell me what this pan would have come off of. Also does anyone have a spare they don't want. Hope this isn't off topic? I used the alternaor and Powersteering brackets from a Continental for the 460 in my 70 F250 4x4. Of course both brackets had to be used because the alternator bracket uses only the inner pulley which does not line up with the fan-currently I'm using the powersteering pump as an idler pulley for the fan(need to find the power steering box). The other thing about the Continental powersteering bracket is that is also part of the bracket for the A/C. I'm not using it yet, so I'm not sure if it will work exactly, the steering shaft looks like it might be a little close.
