Subject: '66 F150 Carb trouble hi, I have a '66 F150, 390, 2bbl, manual choke, 4 spd (granny), manual brakes that I am having trouble getting to run right (read as good). When I bought the truck, it ran rough, the idle had to be set up around 12-1500 just so it wouldn't die when you stop. It turns out this was required because one of the idle jets was totally plugged. you could turn the idle adjustment screw all the way in or completely out of the carb (no leakage) with no change in how it ran. we tried carburetor cleaner and compressed air but it didn't change. I drove it like this for about 8 months and decided that it was time for some help. I picked up a carb at a car swap meet. (this one had a tag so I could get a kit!) I rebuilt the new one and the truck ran a little better. at least I was able to set the idle now. But it still ran rough and would pop back up to the carb erratically. I checked the cap and rotor and I was able to pop off the carbon on the terminals, so I got a new cap and rotor set. I didn't change the points at this time, cause they looked pretty good. I fired it up and it was better, but it still popped back now and then. I put in a new set of points and that also helped a little. Then I checked the plugs, and discovered one that was wet with oil, and one that was completely PACKED with carbon. I don't know if this one ever fired! the other 6 looked pretty good. [This engine has a lot of blow-by, you can see oil in the air coming out of the breather on the valve cover.] I swapped in some new plugs and it quit popping and seemed to be all better, but gradually over the next week-and-a-half the performance deteriorated. It will still idle fine. but while warm (normal) it seems to run lean. with the choke pushed in (open) it will hiccup, but if you pull back on the choke, like less than 1/2 inch, it will smooth out and behave decently. This is symptomatic of a vacuum leak, I sprayed carb cleaner at the base of the carburetor, and noticed NO change. The Vacuum line to the carburetor is all steel. I think that I am getting around *8* MPG. I don't know if this is right or not. I know that I can get 13-15 MPG out of my 1966 Galaxie [352 4bbl auto] I would expect that the 2bbl would get better mileage, although if you consider the air drag differences between the two, maybe they should be similar. Question: (finally) is it possible that all of that popping back created a small vacuum leak in the carb base gaskets, or somewhere else, that I wasn't able to detect? or I have heard of people with their Holly carburetors having the jets getting screwed up when the engine pops back, is the old autolite 2bbl carb as seseptable to that? any information/ideas would be appreciated. feel free to CC:trebor Thanks Rob =8) - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | Robert Baker trebor | Intrests: computers, '60s Fords, auto repair, car shows | | and drawing. http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.dogday.net/~trebor/robhome.htm | - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 09:44:59 EST From: Pengy67 Subject: Re: Not so High End Audio Ethan - You can try the Probe Audio FAQ page - http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.webcentrix.net/probe/audio/audio.html I had it bookmarked (had to call home to get the address), but haven't had a chance to see if they have the wiring diagrams you need. Robert, My truck has a 4bbl Holley, but my mustang has the autolite 2100 carb and I have found it to be one of the most trouble free carbs ever. In fact, when I bout the mustang, it had a holley 2bbl and I had lots of problems with it, so I took the autolite 2bbl from a parts car that I had and put it on my car. With the exception of a minor adjustment each spring when I tune up the car, I haven't had to touch a thing on it in the 7 years I've been using it. I would suspect that if your carb has been rebuilt and otherwise appears to be operating correctly, your problems probably lie elsewhere. If your truck is burning enough oil to foul the spark plugs very quickly you might want to try using a special spark plug that is designed to fire in oil. A friend of mine used them on a p*ntiac he used to own and it seemed to help. These might help for a while, but in the long run, it looks like you will need to tear down the engine for a rebuild:-( Dave Sanchez dchez ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 98 11:10:00 -0800 From: Adam Clever Subject: post to DIN stereo stereo head units to our shaft-style dash openings? I imagine it>> I think you can't 'adapt.' the stock width of the original stereo 'bracket' in my '79 bronco was only 1/4" wider than the DIN chassis--cut a square hole in that and it'd flex all over until it fell apart. My answer was to carefully measure and create a new bracket out of sheet metal that supported the stereo and the heater controls--replacing the original unit. Easy for me, I just have to ask my company's sheet metal shop foreman to make me one. Look in the yellow pages for a shop, I'd guess they could make you one for $30--from your complete and accurate pattern. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 13:01:18 -0800 From: "Hogan, Tom" Subject: Air Snorkel Assembly Anyone see a snorkel assembly for a 390FE air cleaner in a catalog from an old parts supplier?
