Have you ever had trouble with this style either not locking in or not allowing you to unlock them (without backing up the truck)? I've had some people tell me they would "stick" sometimes..... There's a highboy sitting near this farmer's house on my way to work. Everyday, I keep thinking I should ask him if he wants to sell it. It hasn't moved in about six months now, and it looks like the tires are going flat....But the problem is, I already have a truck to work on...... By the way, you don't have any spare parts for the external hubs laying around, do you? The one thing you might want to think about is that the frames may be different between 2WD and 4WD. I know my 69 F-100 4x4 has the frame "boxed" from about the middle of the cab to the big front cross member. A 68 4x2 that I tore apart wasn't "boxed" at all. The Dana 44 axle probably requires the extra strength if you are going to thrash it at all. I don't know how the middle cross-member varies between 4x2 and 4x4's on this year. One way you could go is to find a 79 4x4 frame, and piece together the undercarriage (unless you can find it all in one unit!), and then swap on the body off of your truck.....You should probably be able to keep your existing rear axle.... Probably the hardest part is going to be finding the parts you need.... Let us know which way you end up going....Good Luck! If any one has done this I could use some does and dont's to this matter...Any help will be greatly appreciated... Richard...my advice on the conversion is...don't do it. It is more work than you can imagine. It can be done but it isn't practical. It makes more sense to swap your cab, bed and front end sheet metal on a 4wd frame and running gear. The only way I know to convert a 3/4 ton 2wd to 4wd is to weld in the front frame rails to your 2wd frame. It is much easier to just use the 4wd frame. The f150 can be converted much simpler. As posted earlier this week the list is going down now (8:00pm EST) for the switch to the new list server. The switch should take a couple of hours. Once the switch takes place, an email will be sent to all list members containing uns*bscribe and p*sting instructions. After receiving this email you'll be able to post. S*bscribe requests to the old server will simply result in an email containing new s*bscribe instructions. The web site and FAQ will be updated to reflect the server change. Also, no posts prior to downtime will get lost. I'll be forcing a digest to go out to digest members about 5 minutes before the shutdown so everyone will get their FTE fix.
