The front end is a V*lare but the rearend looks goofy too. Plus, the bolt
pattern on the wheels is different from (smaller than) the wheels on my 67
mercury m100 pickup (smaller on the '56). Plus, it just looks like a D*dge
rearend like the one in my friend's V*liant. I could be wrong tho. Was the
bolt pattern on the 56 wheels smaller than the bolt pattern on the 67-72's?
I kinda doubt it's the original rearend.
Please edify me on the Versailles thing. What years? I am thinking of
doing an econoline pickup next winter, and it would be good to start getting
some parts together for that, like a hotted up 302, strong rearend, etc, etc.

Mike, it sounds like carburetor icing to me. If this happens more often on
damp days when the temperature is in the 40 degree range, and if your truck
idles fine when it's warmed up, then that's what your problem is. There
should be a flex pipe to a stove unit over the pass side exhaust manifold to
take warm air off that when the engine first starts. If you don't have one
of those or are running an open air cleaner then icing can be a problem.
Also, if the engine gets old, the exhaust gas passage in the manifold can
plug up, meaning that you no longer get the immediate heat in the manifold
under the carb to prevent icing that you would get with a new/clean
It's nothing serious, but it is a pain in the neck. If you can rig up a
properly working stove it shud cure the problem.

Subject: Need a 4-speed
If the truck isn't going to be used for towing or the such,
and therefore you don't want a granny gear, I must advocate
you get a 4 speed Toploader. I put one into my 68 2wd and
I love it. Best thing about the truck (right now).
Toploaders are a bit pricey, but totally bulletproof and
will last for the life of the truck. If you can't find one near
you, try calling Dan Williams (I am not affiliated, but got
some stuff from him a while back. Toploader guru and nice
guy to boot.

Two words of caution about the swap.
1. Make sure you can get all the linkage parts you need (shouldn't be
to hard. There are plenty of trucks w/ standard trannys). I made the
mistake of trying to convert my 68 Torino to a 4 speed. Couldn't find
a clutch linkage. Bad time...
2. Make sure your block has the equalizer bar pivot machining on the
driver's side. The clutch equalizer bar will sit in this machining, but if
block doesn't have it, you'll be sorry (see #1 about the Torino). I know
the 1968 and 69 429 blocks DIDN'T have this machining, and therefore you
have to improvise to make your clutch linkage work. Also, make sure you
can get your pilot bushing (goes in butt of crank to hold the input shaft
tranny). The 1968 and 69 429s weren't machined for this, so...

If I wanted to swap my 4x4 to auto what can I use???I know I need
a c-6 with a FE bellhousing would a c6 and transfer case from a 78/79
bronco f150 work????I know they didnt offer fe's but i can switch the
bell housing...Or is there something i can bolt to my tcase now
and just remove the 4 speed???

Personally, if I had a 73-79 (and my truck looked better!) I'd send
a photo in. Many of the trucks on the web site are really good
looking and they are asking for permission so I think its great
for all parties involved.

I'm glad the web page is getting a new sponsor. HOWEVER I wanted to add
that Auto Krafters has been harvesting email addresses from the mailing
lists for unsolicited email advertisements (aka SPAM). I didn't find it too
offensive, because it was very targeted and wasn't of the bulk variety but
still I never asked about any of their products or anything and got a
message asking to check out their web site. I guess what I'm saying is I'd
like to see a little more care given by the companies affiliating themselves
with the list before they send email to folks. Like I said though their
particular message wasn't all that offensive or anything and I don't think
it will stop me from doing business with them in the future. I just would
like to see some set of guidelines established for the conduct of companies
before they get do something that they may not know is considered offensive

I remember reading a series of articles in Hot Rod about a blown 302 Ch*v
back in the summer of '96. They got 549 horsepower and managed a smidge
over 23 mpg with it in a '65 Chevelle. Even though horsepower and mileage
apparently can be combined in a small block it's pretty clear that they
dumped bucket loads of money into that motor to pull it off, which is the
main reason my toys have big blocks. I'd love a high winding small block
and a 4-spd but my nickel and dime budget dictates cubic inches and a
relatively sane rpm limit.
