I recently put a 750 cfm Edelbrock on my 460 in my '64 and had to build linkage. I went to the junkyard and scavanged some parts for about $3.00 and made a piece that worked great. I put a 4 core new modine radiator in and that solved it. I'll give my introduction. I have a '66 F250 with a tired 352 and a cast iron fmx with "morning sickness". It's fairly clean looking with '68 steel wheels and new interior (custom cab). I have a fresh 390 built by a local machine shop and it is collecting dust until I finish building the engine for my Mustang. The truck is begining to look like a mid sixties version of what a NASCAR supertruck would have looked like. Powder-coated wheels , plain white exterior and a dual exhaust that will soon exit out of the quarter panels just like Holman & Moody used to do it. I've been lurking for a couple of days and I like the feel of this list and hope to contribute. Thanks, Don Rositch '66 F250 '68 Mustang coupe ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 21:07:38 -0500 From: Ken Payne Subject: Re: Thunderbird Special? Forwarded for: ROSITCH Dan (and everyone else), Your friend could be right about that 390 not fitting his Fairlane. If it is a '66 or later the engine will fit but if it doesn't have the heads with the diagonal bolt pattern (used on Fairlanes and Mustangs) you can't bolt up the proper exhaust manifolds to fit the chassis. You can also probably get date codes from the different castings to see when the engine castings were made (I don't have that information available). I'm sure the Thunderbird Special engine was offered in other cars than the Thunderbird. As it turns out the 70 390 "Super Cool" option is the 74 460 "Standard Cool" radiator. They are both 3 core but the 390 is 5 inches shorter and the upper tank isn't as huge. It didn't seem to be worth the hassle to adapt flanges and all the other things that might come along. The 390 rad has only 18% less frontage. Size isn't everything, fins per inch makes a big difference. Just for a test: Next summer when it is 90 or so, I am going to put 1000 lbs of water ( if I need to I can drain it out )in the bed and drive to Big Bear ( 6000 feet or so ) and see how it goes. I haven't really heard much about the modifications you can make to a 390. I'm quite interested, actually. What are some 'mild' mods versus some 'wild' mods you've seen? Dan _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 22:15:00 -0500 From: Schottsweb Subject: 302 swap Well according to your posts I should have left things the way they were. I had the trans. bolted in and had 3 sets of motor mounts and was getting ready to get another set but opted to use the ones that came from a 69 with 302 and drilled new holes for the tranny mount and moved it forward. New developments are the Hedman Hedders don't fit the one on the driver's side is o.k. but on the passengers side the 3rd pipe back from the front hits the crossmember that goes under the motor and the header lays right up against the starter. Your exactly right Dana in that so many people have done this swap that I don't understand what I could possibly be doing wrong it's very straight forward and though I am not an A.S.E. certified mechanic I feel that I am mechanically inclined I worked in my dad's bodyshop for several years before becoming a welder and now am the foreman I am fair if not better at fabrication and welding but I wanted to try to use factory set-ups and stock parts my mistake. Sorry about all of the venting I am just really frustrated every juncture I come to seems to have yet another surprise for me. I guess the opinion here is that I should go back to the stock trans. location and make the mounts fit or find ones that do correct???
