With the amount of blow-by you're describing, I'd be surprised if you don't have some blown compression rings as well as oil rings. I don't think you should drive it like this. It's just a matter of time before something serious gives way in the engine and perhaps does irrepairable (sp) damage. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 18:58:33 CST From: "Harry Jennings" Subject: Re: fordtrucks61-79-digest V2 #112 >No! Because the guys did not reply to the issue of the studs at the radiator wall that most cars have. You know those rubber tipped bolts that the front of the hood rest on. Did the mid sixties ('65) trucks have them? I see some beautiful '64-'66 trucks in the list pictorial. If so what is the "approximate" height of the space/gap between the hood and the fenders? My hood not only has the release in the grill, but a hook that goes through a square hole that must be pushed back so you can open the hood. I am wondering if my hood is being pushed too far down in the front, due to lack of these studs, causing the rear of the hood to pop up a little. Can somebody check their truck and see if these things actually where used in those years? PLEASE!!! Thanks! - -=DENNIS=- Oh.. by the way...I have pulled the only chrome F-100 oval logo from the drivers side of the '66 in the junk yard. Its different than the one on the passenger side of my '65. Year wise, I had a '88 F-150 4x4 that I was going to put a lift kit under, and I bought a set of superlift coils for the twin-I beam setup, and ended up selling my truck before I put them in. I bought my '78 F-150 4x4 and used them in there instead. I was happily surprised that they fit, when my buddy wanted to lift his 2 wheel drive a little bit in the nose and take the rake out of it, so I gave him my old 4x4 coils and he put them in his '84. (had to change camber blocks though) But, from my experience, from '73 and up to '96 they should all be the same diameter/wrap at both ends considering these all fit in fine. shoman > > Is there a difference between 2wd Coil Springs and 4wd Coils???? > Or are they interchangeable??? > Joe > +-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ > | Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 > | List removal information is on the web site. | > +---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 00:36:53 -0500 From: Serian Subject: 300-I6 manifolds ? Some people have eMail readers that can't handle the extras. When the Digest is processed the "attachments" will most likely get deleted and will be of no use or get converted and cause all kinds of problems. This is just my understanding of the situation. FTC I am putting quick disconnects on for the jumper cables. No more lifting the floormat to give people a jump start. As to the hood hinge problems. The hindges have small plate about 3" long that fits between two parts of the hinge. This is kind of hard to explain without good pictures but I don't have a scanner yet (I would set them up as an FTP, so don't even get started) that keep the movements of the hinge correct. They act as a pivot in the center. Anyway as the hinge ages the main pivots get weak the the two halfs spread aparts( one side to the fender the other to the engine. If they go to far this little plate will fall off the pivots its sandwiched between. What this does then is allow the back half of the hinge to come forward(think of it as bending backwards) under the strees of the spring. There is a little catch on the hinge to keep it from going to far. At this point you have to push the hood back to get it to close correctly. If the hinge condition gets worse the hinge will completely invert and is a real pain to get back into shape. If anyone knows how to recondition a hinge I have a set that really needs it. I have alread tried the enforcer to "tighten" the pivots with no luck. - -- Don Grossman duckdon 63 Ford F-100 4x4 67' 390, t-98, Spicer 24, Dana 60, Dana 44, power steering, power brakes, and now ON BOARD AIR! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 18:12:54 -0800 From: danadeb Subject: Re: 1973 Helm Ford Truck Service Manuals - 460 CID engine missing I think the 460 was a late model year thing, but if you have a 460 then the 74 books might be better. I have heard this for years and have wondered if it's because of the adapters that are available or there is no way to make an adapter that would benefit an engine. I've mostly had v8's so manifolds are available to upgrade the intake. Years ago a place built straight 6 bowties for Land Cruisers they called 6=8. They used a custom made 4V intake on it. A friend had one built for his Land Cruiser. The intake looked to me like they took a 2V intake and cut out the flange and welded in a 4V flange. The idea seemed OK in theory but the engine didn't last long enough to judge if it had practical benefits. Only lasting a week proved the engine was crap. In that short life I must admit, it ran like a raped ape! I was just thinking what you and the other members think about having a shop adapt the manifold for a 2bbl carburetor! I would think any machine shop could do it and it shouldn't cost much more than buying an after market intake. In fact, I would think much less. This is ignorance at work. I have no idea if this is possible to do. I'm just wondering if it is! Later!
