I have a 60 amp alternator on my truck and I have 13 extra lights plus two 100w fog lamps, I also have a stereo system that draws alot of power (I had to use 4 guage wire). All of which are always running when the key switch is on. Also there is 44 feet of neon tubes which run sometimes. My alternator has done a great job of keeping the battery charged. You mean my comments are only considered "Opinions"??? :-) Fact is there is only one right (best) way to do anything, it's just that, as humans, we haven't found them yet so all any of us, even the most knowledgeable of us can offer is conjecture, maybe educated conjecture but still conjecture :-) Course, now, the little red book is going to remedy that (if there are no typos) :-) Michigan roads, Broncos and Kidney belts, What a team! - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 08:17:19 -0500 From: Brian & Jacque Milbrandt Subject: Red Book...info For those of you who would like a copy of the Red Book.. The term TUNE-UP was coined back when Henry Ford was working on his first prototype for the automobile. This first ignition system was very simple; one ignition coil for one spark plug, so if there was four spark plugs there would be four ignition coils. These coils needed to be adjusted to provide the same spark intensity for better idle and acceleration. As these coils worked they made a buzzing sound so when you adjust them properly they all buzzed the same; therefore they where in tune and that's how the term tune-up was coined. This term stuck and was associated with the replacement of spark plugs and any performance or rough idle problem that could be associated to engine operation. Once the distributor was developed the term tune-up had no meaning as to how and engine performed, but the consumer who was use to hearing this term around a garage, automatically associated poor running quality with the need to be in tune. sleddog ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 10:03:49 -0400 (EDT) From: GMPACHECO Subject: Re: ADMIN: Sticker design ready, now goes to press. Last I heard it was next to a pair of knee highs being used as some kind of BBB prevention, breathing apparatus experiment. Some people see something just lying around, (like in a dresser) and they think "Hey, someone must be throwing this away. I could make something this." Next thing you know, the nothing I got, is gone! You need to keep an eye on those southern engine builders. They can give you a hand and take your molars. Trouble that's what they are, just plain old trouble. Your partly to blame too! If I hadn't been spending a week trying to decipher that "ohms law" post I wouldn't have been distracted! Now here I am, no coal, no stocking and I still don't know what the hell you were talking about! Besides, the only difference between me and you is, you never get caught! Last cookie in the jar and I haven't had one yet. Who gets caught with their hand in the jar? Guess I don't need a 460 in my truck. I need a fusebox! I picked up some fuse holders at PepBoys and I'm soldering them into the fusebox. I think this is going to work. If I could keep the blood from building up in my head long enough to get them done, I'll find out! So are you finished with the "lil Auschwitz " VW NEO-heater installation yet? I can feel it coming for that one! If You have a craving for electrics but need to save some $$, maybe the thing to do is go to the wrecking yard with a tape measure and a 12v battery... Use the tape to find some likely sized candidates, then use the battery to see how much air they move... I still think that 2 smaller fans are more effective than 1 large, but You can "audition" a bunch with the battery and see what You think. I'll bet You could get set up with all the goods for under $40 at the wreckers, maybe way less. Most newer cars have electrics and the junk yard should have 100's of OEM fans to choose from! Hi Gang, Have a few questions that I hope you can help me with. I have a '79 F250 with a completely stock 460 in it and a C6. It seems to me that it at idle it runs a little rough. Even when driving I can feel a sort of pulsing sensation on a very consistent rhythm. Seems to be the most noticeable when costing down a hill in drive and foot off the gas peddle. This truck has 113,000 miles on it. Also has the factory "Holly" 4 bbl. carb. and spread bore intake. I am fairly sure the carb needs a rebuild. Is the factory Ford built by Holly V4 worth rebuilding or should I just get a new one? Any idea what size this thing is? I was guessing about a 600 cfm but don't know for sure. A few other details, the dual exhaust is in tough shape and sounds to be leaking under the cab. I also have know idea when the last tune up was done. What do you think would be causing this uneven idle and pulsing? Here is the numbers off the warranty card if it tells you anything. F25JCDF26040 VU 58 F25237XK A Question two, same truck. I also am interested in your opinion on how high a speed this truck should be able to stay in 2nd gear. It has 3.54 gears in the rear and a newly rebuilt C6 and 235 75 R16 tires. With the gas peddle on the floor the truck with always shift out of 2nd to 3rd at 64 mph. It will also not kick down into passing gear if I am going 60 mph or more. From what I have read this seems fairly low. What do you think? Is this related to the carb, general tune of the engine or something else? Any help would be great help. Well, tomorrow (weather permitting) I'm gonna swap my stock D3TE 4-bbl FE intake for a Edelbrock performer 390. By the time I get the alternator and water pump, rockers, pushrods, etc, off the truck, manifolds swapped (stocker weighs 78 lbs!) and everything back on and valves adjusted, it ought to make for a long day. I'll let Y'all know how it goes, + what performance difference the Edelbrock makes. I really don't know if the edelbrock will make more power than the stocker or not, but at the least I expect it to shave 52 lbs off the front of the truck!! I don't expect much trouble with the swap (other than the weight of the D3TE!), but I'm unclear as to what type of beer goes best with an FE intake swap... Any preferances out there as to what beverage is best for FE intake work? I'll post a list of the results when the job is done.. Screen" Subject: Paint dipping and wire wrapping Finally got some time in on my 1974 F100 Ranger XLT. For Tom Hogan....I tried the paint dipping technique. Poured some Rustoleum Black oil based enamel in a coffee can that was 3/4 full of water. About 1/4 inch of paint floated on the surface. Dipped an alternator bracket in it and pull it out slowly. Paint did adhere somewhat to the bracket but not nearly as well as I hoped. Plus it dripped forever! What a mess. I was not impressed with this technique and would not recommend it. Went back to the spray can. On the subject of wiring harnesses...I pulled the main engine harness off of the truck today. It was saturated in oil, muck, dirt...etc...removed all of the old electrical tape type wrapping and cleaned up the wires. The were in amazingly good shape except for some end connectors that a previous owner had done a lousy job replacing. I decided to use strap ties every few inches. IMHO, this makes for a very clean and neat installation. Gonna cover that with the ever humble black plastic loom and then attach the harness near the original points with some different harness ties. Not sure what the heck you call them. I have some that are metal and plastic with screw holes and some that are just clear plastic. I think they will look neater than the....
