Usually there is a number after the D....D means 1970's vintage so say a D5 would indicate the casting was first produced in 1975. Never seen a Ford Part number that starts out DN....should be a number after the D. N is the code for the type vehicle it was first used on. A T code would mean truck...anybody out there know what the N code is for? E means engine. For example my intake manifold casting number is D5TE9425...etc meaning first cast in 1975...truck...engine...9425 = intake manifold.... then the modification codes. 6015 is the actual part number Probably just stands for engine block..might also indicated block size.....Ford dealer should be able to tell you if this equates to a 429 or 460 block. The A2B is the modification/version code for this block. Got my flame suit on if anybody disagrees with the above....How about it Sleddog? Sleddog is our resident 460 Big Block expert. My 360/390 FE motor has a 352 block stamp on it on the top front drivers side of the block. Had to use some elbow grease to remove about 1 inch of caked on mud and grease but it was there. When I asked about who did the conversion, the owner maintained it was sold that way from the factory. I've been under the impression (false?) that the 460 wasn't offered as a factory option til 1977 or '78 (mid-year '77 model change). So can anyone offer definitive info as to when the 460 was first offered in the F series--for model years before 1977 I assume the production numbers were quite low relative to the FE block version (and were 428s offered in trucks too or only 360-390s?). Drivetrains offered through this period are also a bit murky in my mind. Up through mid-1977 was the only F-250-350 offering a Dana 60 in the rear and a heavy-duty (large hub) 44 in front? Or was the Dana 60 front/Dana 70 rear an option as was true mid-1977 to 1979? And divorced transfer cases also ended with the 1977 model year? Disc brakes on the heavy duty Dana 44 the front axle were first available with the '76 model year, or earlier? Any disc brake front Dana 60 offering before mid-1977? Sorry for all the questions but thought I might as well get this all sorted out once and for all. Boy it feels good to have real brakes again. Finally got around to getting the plate info off the drivers door for you all to ponder. First some info on the truck's history: Some rich old guy in Carmichael, California (Sacramento really) wanted a crewcab and ordered it from Ford thru the Ellsworth Harrold Ford dealership in Sacto. A year later, while on a bike ride with family, I spotted this truck going by with For Sale sign. Dad & I chased it for a couple of miles and got the basic info. ( I was 9 years old at the time) We got with the owner at his house later to discuss the deal. Turns out he was thinking about taking out the back seat to haul rocks. He had a rock saw and played with it. We talked him into getting a Jeep (saw him later with TWO jeeps, one on a trailer behind the other) This guy bought a new caddy for his wife every year, though she only put a couple hundred miles on each, can you say MONEY? Dad bought it for $2800, I got it a few years ago. I learned to drive in this truck. Known special order info: Crew Cab, door pockets, power brakes (4drums), A/C (ParkAir), short bed Known details: 292 V8, Ch*vy drive shaft carrier bearing, 1/2 ton suspension, B*nneville brake booster Engine replaced once (sucked valve) Known mods: Oversize tires (still bias ply), overleaf springs (old style), vinyl dash top installed, tailgate replaced (rust), self adjusting brake mechanism removed, repainted same color a few times. Hauled a 3/4 ton fully overcab custom built 8 ft camper for LOTS of years. I'll dig up a photo some day of it with the camper. I don't seem to recall this before In 79 Ford changed the 460 to external balanced so if they put an older flex plate on it it may be out of balance. Find out what year flex plate they put on it and also make sure the bottom end is actually a 79 vintage setup. They can not be put on out of balance since the hole spacing prevents that but they can be put on backwards which would caurse all kinds of problems. Better take it back to them and have them check it out for you under the repair warantee. Hey Gary, keep us posted on how the electric cooling fan works out. I've been thinking of one myself. I have a friend with an 84 302 150 that put a single blade model on a few weeks ago. He was a little disappointed because it ran a little hotter than it did with the stock model. He is now thinking about trying a dual blade electric. I'm the guy with the rich Holley problem. I'll try to get those metering plate numbers sometime today, if you still have your catalog with you. Is this > telling > me my rings are worn?? If so, anybody got any quick fix ideas short Oil will increase the compression on brand new rings by almost that much so I don't think that's your problem. More likely a manifold leak, PCV or head gasket or possably valve seal. Get torque masters and forget it :-) Really make sure the PCV is working properly first, then if not fixed try the valve seals (next easiest fix) then if still not fixed and you have time put new gaskets on the intake and put RTV in the corners of the rubber front and rear seals where they meet the side gaskets, just a small dab is all you need there, move the manifold around a bit to make sure it seats squarely with the heads and evenly torque the bolts so it doesn't shift or twist as you tighten it down. This last step it very important since it will tend to stay where ever you start getting something tight so if you tighten it evenly it tends to shift evenly till it homes in. Head gaskets would be a last resort in my book and very unlikely to cause this problem without a compression loss anyway so I rule it out IMHO :-) The swift of foot and slow of wit have more off road experiences - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Oct 1997 09:23:13 -0400 From: Ken Payne Subject: ADMIN: Out of order digests. Your analysis is exactly right, prefix it year and application, number is base part number designating type of part and suffix is version/modification code. List, OK guys it's time to haul out those opinions again! Recently went on a extended vacation pulling camper and hauling all the gear associated with a family of four. My '79 F-150, 351M, ran ok except that it tended to get hot in stop-n-go traffic (90?F, A/C on) and would boil over immediately after pulling off the highway. Temperature stayed normal when running down the highway. The 351M was a swap, the original motor was a 302. I suspect that the radiator is the original 302 radiator. The fan has been replaced with an aluminum flex fan which is chewed up from when the alternator bolt broke and backed out into the fan, (it's not chewed up so bad as to affect cooling). There is about a 2" gap between the edge of the fan and the shroud, the fan is smaller than the shroud and set back from the shroud opening. I don't plan to replace the radiator until this one dies, I'll probably consider a larger core radiator at that time. My question is about the fan. Should I ; 1) Go to the boneyard and dig up a stock fan/thermostatic clutch set-up. 2) Get a new flex fan with spacers to get it centered in the shroud opening. 3) Pitch the flex fan and go with an electric fan set-up. I'm leaning toward the electric fan but am interested in hearing your opinions. I've read some negative comments about electric fans not moving enough air for slow desert crawling, etc. While I'm not currently planning any outing like that stop-n-go traffic is a real possibility. I'm looking forward to your comments. later dale c +-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ | Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 | Send Unsubscribe requests to fordtrucks61-79-request +---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 09:43:23 -0400 From: Sleddog Subject: RE: hubs and stuff.... many hardware stores sell the snap rings - just take the other one in for a match. sleddog - ---------- From: SLaG[SMTP:rasberry Sent: Sunday, October 05, 1997 10:21 PM To: fordtrucks Subject: hubs and stuff.... ok...thanks to everyone who has answered about my hubs... i have checked all over town and no one has axle shaft snap rings... not even a junkyard...i still have a couple to check though...so maybe i can find one... if not...the guy at auto zone said i would have to buy a whole new hub assembly ....which i just avoided doing..so that would suck... if i can't find one ...then you guys who can get em for a $1 need to send me one... =o) i hope you feel a sense of accomplishment because if you know it or not you are all helping me build up my rig...and i thank you for it ... however the going is slow on my minimum wage budget....... thanks again. rasberry - -- DIa??a +-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ | Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 | Send Unsubscribe requests to fordtrucks61-79-request +---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 09:55:32 -0400 From: Sleddog Subject: RE: Anyone ?? the 6015 means it is a cyl block. the D means 1970-1979. there should be a number 0-9 after the D to denote the years in the 1970's. i think you should look at the number closely. it might say D1VE. this would be a 1971 429/460 block without the tall deck hight of the '72 on blocks.
