I borrowed a trailer and drove an hour. I wanted to crack open the cover to make sure it was 30 spline and see how everything was inside. The guy says he tried to call me and that he didn't want me opening his sh*t. I had told him the night before I wanted to do this and he didn't say anything. So I took my deposit and headed home. What a waste of time. I found another place that has them for 100$ each, but the guy has no idea what he has. Has them all in a pile. It even could be had in an F100 from 1973-1975. After that, you had to get the F150. I had a friend in high school who's dad had a 1979 F150 Lariat (regular cab, LWB) with a factory 460/C6 in it. My main thought was the tubing bender, which you can rent and use in your driveway! The cost of the bender, per day, has to be less then paying a muffler shop to kink up a bunch of pipe. It's designed for making your own exhaust, you just buy the straight stuff then buy whatever radius(s) you need and slap it all together. I've never tried it but it looks pretty cool. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 11:56:07 -0800 From: Jerry & Lisa Subject: Re: Online VIN Decoder Hi all, we just used the old VIN decoder there and got an interesting result. The transmission type that came up on our '77 F150 (G) was one of those FMX's. We always though it was a C6. I know there was a thread on the differences between these transmissions, but stupid me didn't pay attention; after all, I thought a had a C6. So the question is, how do I tell if my tranny is a C6 or FMX? Thanks in advance for any help. If you wanted the 4-spd., you had to settle for the 351-M or the 400. I know this for a fact because I originally ordered my 79 F-250 4x4 with the 460 but wanted the 4-spd. not the automatic and was told by FORD ( not the salesman) the Louisville plant manager called me personally and said that I could get the 460 engine but it only came with the automatic. Also at the time, my friend had a 79 F-250 with the 460 in it brand-new from the factory. That's why I wanted the bigger engine plus I special ordered the truck and wanted the bigger engine to push snow with here in chicago and tow my trailer. If you read the 79 4-wheeler sales brochure from ford, it shows the 460 as an optional engine. There probably were'nt too many produced with the 460 because of the gas mileage and mileage & gas prices were a big deal back in 79 but they were available anyway. I consider myself sort of an expert on these trucks as I've worked for ford for many years and own a 79 4x4 that I bought new, plus I now have my own business and sell obsolete parts for these trucks and all other ford vehicles too. I think the FMX was used primarily on the FE engines but c-6's go all the way back to 75 for sure and probably further. My 75 van had one. Pretty sure the 70 460 was hooked to the c-6 as well, not sure now? I believe somewhere around 78 ford put the 31's in all the pickups and broncos but cars and maybe vans used the 28's. You can get a posi with either spline AFAIK. The Zink oxidizes very readily and if I'm not mistaken creates such things as free clorine from other materials in the air etc along with certain toxic Oxides but if you take some small precautions to keep the smoke out of your face I don't see the problem?? The thinner the steel the more difficult it is to weld especially when you have foreign matter popping and sputtering and blowing the metal around. You shouldn't have to weld on it anyway if you design it right, should you?? Even the balance tube can be installed without welding with "T"'s. Well, that article was ok, I think that > I finally understand the "you have to use the stock carb or you'll > burn up your AOD" myth. But what I really found interesting was the Talked to a tranny repair shop and was told that the reason isn't an adjustment but the length of the lever the kick down in attached to and how it interfaces with the throttle. On the AOD it's not really a kick down but a throttle position sensor which works at all rpm. It has to be solidly connected to and operate one for one with the throttle with exactly the right length from throttle shaft to kick down tube pin and on the non electronic AOD's works with other sensors like vacuum and governor to control the shifts. If it isn't timed right due to incorrect length or improperly controlled by the throttle the sensors will conflict causing delayed or early shifts or widen the window for the shifts so it doesn't lock into gear solidly etc.. Technically, I suppose you could measure the length and duplicate it in a carb and make it work but I can't be sure about that :-) I know where compressors get their air, it gets sucked out of the NEIGHBOR'S electric lines :-) - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 17:46:31 -0800 From: danadeb Subject: Re: Speaking of exhaust stuff! Thank you for all folks givin' tips about the engine identification. Finally it's a 302 (according to the numbers left on the valve cover and the parts guy at the local FORD dealer)... But just to continue the overall truck id, i'll throw in the numbers i've found at many different places on the truck (except where they should be) On the rear of the door and on the door post there isn't any VIN.. on the door there are two hole so i imagine it's not the original door or the original VIN whas removed... I have to say that according to the papers i have, the truck was inspected by the immatriculation bureau 2 years ago and they putted ind they're VIN which reads: F104GA85230 in the engine compartement attached on the cab in the center there was this bunch of numbers: ROT 3678 Z 82 W 1HA LONG F10 BJ5169 4B R on the valve cover we can read: G366AA C80 5 566B R0 S25 and on the automatic tranny: PGD AC8 L24 D9 UP BB 042613 on the carb: AS2 EOTE DA So if someone can tell me how to put all those numbers together... On the engine, the ID tag was obviously removed... The drive axle seems to be a DANA (i assume this because the filler plug is on the back plate). It would be kind if someone tells me how to identify this part too. You have to understand that the truck is in pretty bad shape and there's oil and grease everywhere. I plan to change the front and the rear main oil seal all the gaskets and change the piston rings but keep the engine stock. I'll also do the head job (seals and springs...) Anoter problem wich needs advice, the brake pedal doesn't come back and all the fluids level are cheked??? Can it be a booster problem??? Master cylinder problem???? This motor was completely rebuilt less than a year ago, and the current carb is a tired 2bbl Autolite that needs replacing (has a crack in the base). Heads are original and unported, but were cleaned and re-ground during rebuild. I found a used 4bbl Edelbrock intake that will fit, and am thinking of getting around a 500cfm Edelbrok carb. (thats about as small as I've found in a 4bbl) Will this work with what I've got? I'd like the added hp, but not if its just going to drown the motor.....
