I had herd of an old timers Has it occured to anyone that cold oil doesn't pump especially well? And requires considerably more power to pump than warm oil? And the mechanical advantage of the cam on the oil pump is considerable whereas the drill is direct? The oil pump should be hard to turn when it's pumping cold oil but what usually happens to shear pins is as I said earlier, dibris gets between the rotors and lockes it up if only momentarily since the engine doesn't even slow down something has to give and the theory is that the gear (once the pin is sheared) won't keep the dist lined up so the engine quits and the eingine is safe because it can't run now (there's enough splash to get it safely to a stop generally) but I've seen them run long enough, though very badly, to completely destroy the engine because the pump shaft was broken as well and the operator didn't know what was wrong so he kept trying to coax it home. If I suspected the pump, I would remove the pan and inspect it since my engines cost more than I care to throw away :-) Broncos really are supposed to have brakes aren't they? - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 08:14:08 -0500 (EST) From: JRFiero Subject: Re: changing engines - hoist height, etc Sorry, wasn't paying attention to the year of the truck or the details of the thread, but it was about lifting an engine high enough ... If I recall, on a '52 there are about 12 bolts holding the whole front end on. Two big ones under the U-shaped radiator bracket, two on each running board, and several holding the fender/fenderwell to the cab. After disconnecting the wires and coolant lines, two people could walk the whole nose - grill, radiator, the works - right off the front of the truck. Then things get real easy. I've also done this on later model cars, so maybe its an option on the subject truck. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 09:16:15 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: 5 Speed and an FE > Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 18:02:10 -0800 > From: Don Grossman > Subject: Re: 5 Speed and an FE > I'll trade you one for a clark. I was under > the assumption that with using such short pipes to start with that > it would not be needed. The cylinder banks fire unevenly so that they don't fire left, right, left, right etc so the pulses are uneven coming out of the collectors. The balance tube does exactly what it's name implies in that it balances the pulse pressure between the pipes for better scavenging. I'm not sure at what rpm range this has the most effect but suspect it may affect the top more than the bottom, not sure. I haven't installed mine yet and my engine chokes at about 4k rpm but I think it's more to do with the carb jetting than the balance tube. My engine needs lots of work so it could be any of several things right now. Both are the same part # ,Motorcraft 12127, and are visually identical. Upon further inspection of the old one, it appears that the part of the housing that locates the distributor into the block has been milled/ filed down some. I'm guessing here, but I think the hole in the block that the distributor goes in, and the hole that the oil pump shaft is in are not quite lined up. If that's the case, filing that part of the housing a little bit would allow for a little bit of a tilt, enough for the distributor to go in both holes. Anyway, the gear on the old one is still attached, it just has about 30 degrees of play in it, maybe the roll pin is just partially sheared (is that possible?). So...should I file down the new distributor housing so it fits, or rebuild the old one? Is rebuilding one just a matter of taking the guts out of the new one, and putting them in the old one? Are there any special tools involved? Sorry for the length, thanks for the help. All Ford distributores have this number stanped or cast into them. Since this is a 460 the pilot hole for the shaft and the base hole in the top are both in the block casting and have to be lined up as I'm reasonably sure this operation is done with one cutting tool in a fixture to ensure alignment. If they are not, no amount of filing or bending the housing will make it work properly since it will fail soon after you run it due to the forces on the bushing etc.. There must be some build up in the hole interfering with the installation. Look carefully at the top hole for caked on or burnt on grease, carbon, aluminum etc. and the bottom hole for burrs, signs of being hammered which may have caused the hole to be out of round etc.. If it needs scraping I suggest you take the pan off and clean every thing up and while you're at it take a peek inside the pump too and replace the pickup tube and screen. Something just occured to me, the cam may be broken and pushed out so that it interferes with the installation. This is a long shot but I just recently heard about just such a situation.
