Stock is 2.5. I ran 2.5 all the way but 2" header pipe to the cat might not be a bad idea. I'm running 1-3/4 headers if I remember correctly into dual exhaust with no cross over as yet, I know they're less than 2" in any case. There was some discussion on the dual vs single a while back and it seems there is a way to use duals and meet the requirements but I don't know what the set up is. The 351C is in a big block series but uses the small block pattern and has small block bore spacing. It's deck height and casting weight makes it bigger which is why it came under some scrutiny in the racing circles at one point. Opponents argued that it wasn't really a small block :-) Believe it or not, with all it's size and weight it still had to be reinforced with rods and other tricks in the heads due to the huge ports to be raced successfully :-) Michigan roads, Broncos and Kidney belts, What a team! - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 08:15:24 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: new problem > From: SARHOG > Date: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 23:16:16 -0400 (EDT) > Subject: new problem > distributor (the same as the one that came off) and now I can't get > the distributor seated all the way. I'm looking forward to getting it back If the pin was sheared something caused it. Usually that something is a galled distributor bushing/shaft which should be obvious when you try to turn the shaft with it out of the engine or seized oil pump in which case the drive shaft is probably twisted. I'd pull the drive shaft and take a look and then manually test the pump with a socket (one that won't fall off!) It's been awhile since I did this but I always had to shove some grease down there to keep the head of the pump shaft from falling over. I thought I may have problems before I got there so I was expecting the worst. I just got my '79 F250 Crew Cab about six months ago and the guy I bought it from was real evasive about the smog check. I thought how bad could it be? It has current tabs on it. I have been doing some tuning work and have many of the ignition parts replace that were in terrible shape when I bought the truck. I pulled in and the first thing the test tells me is that I need to go in side to the office. Not a good sign. Seems it failed last year and was working on some kind of extension. Got the paper work and pulled back around to have the test. Technician looks for gas caps. That checks OK. Looks at the sniff test results. That PASSED. I'm thinking this is great! I passed! Then the little weasel gets out his stupid little mirror and said. You don't have a cat. You failed. Go back to the office. Crap!! Now I have about thirty days to get my rusty old dual exhaust converted back over to a single cat system in order to met the spec book requirements. The hard part to swallow is that even with not having checked the timing yet and a carb that NEEDS a rebuild I past the sniffer test. So What Do I Need This Stupid Cat For Anyway!! The guy in the office said, because it is supposed to have one. Well la-de-da! Guess I have to start that exhaust project about three months sooner than I wanted. Won't the wife be just THRILLED. By the way, anybody know what the stock pipe size on a '79 F250 Crew Cab with a 460 is?? I was thinking about running 2" to the converter and then 2.5" the rest of the way. I'm All Fords I've seen use a simple hex drive shaft which sits in a hex socket in the pump and should stay relatively upright. They have lots of lead on the end so when the hex is lined up it should slip right into the distributor. It usually takes a couple of tries to get it lined up. I used to use the remote start button to rotate the engine till it dropped in but it's easier to turn it with an old dist shaft or socket (that won't fall off) and the lead will coax it into position but I think he has a bigger problem: What sheared the pin in the first place??? Mathmatically the ratio is determined by the circumferneces of the two circles which turns out to be a function of the diameters where they are tanget to each other but much of the formula can be crossed out and we're left with a simple percentage problem which can be computed through the tooth ratio since the teeth represent a specific portion of the circumference of each and are equally spaced on both so count the ring gear teeth and the pinion gear teeth and divide the ring by the pinion to get the ratio. The ratio is actually stamped on the periphery of the ring gear in the form 9:39 or 10:35 with various delimiters like 9x39 or 9..39 etc.. I can't remember the exact synrtax right now but the 9:39 is 4.11 and the 10:35 is 3.5 etc..
