My speedometer is off, I do 45 when everyone else is at 55 - 60 and 25when every one else does 30-35. Is there an easy way to fix this? Also when I was at the junkyard on Wednesday I saw a 76 F-150 with a 100 mph speedometer while mine is only a 80. I was thinking that if I put that in it might help my problem because the Torino had a 120 speedo. Also I have a ALT light and an OIL light if I get a cluster with gauges does it just plug in or does it need something else added in. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 05:41:50 -0700 From: "deconblu" Subject: Re: Cooling system question Just my .02! My '73 F-100 has both vent and temp controls. They probable found out the same thing I did on the way to work one night. Having no patience nor common sense, I would get in my truck and turn the heat up to full open the vent and put the fan on high. When it got to broil in the cab I'd roll the window down a little, kick the fan off and flip the vent shut, leaving the heat on high to keep it comfortable in the cab. One night I didn't kick the fan off, just flipped the vent shut. After a couple blocks the windshield began to fog up (or so I thought) I reached over flipped the vent over to defrost it and flames flashed up out of the defroster vents, being powered by a blower turned up on high. Well let me tell you, it took me about a nanosecond to realize I don't want my defroster vent open and closed it again. Smoke had filled the cab and was so thick I couldn't inhale (same feeling as getting the wind knocked out of you). So I'm rolling down the window and pulling over to the side of the road, I can't see, can't breath, but on this cold winter night with the window down, it was nice and toastie warm in the cab of my truck. I got the truck to the side of the road, stopped and in park, but I was unable to find the key to shut off the truck. So exit stage left. I walked around to the passenger side (giving me time to get my wind back plus I'd be closer to my fire extinguisher) and opened the door. Smoke was rolling out from under the dash and out the defroster vents. Standing there, getting ready to dive in, I could see two pillars of smoke swirling out and up from the open doors. Well enough sight seeing I had a job to do. I estimated the location of the key and fire extinguisher, formulated my plan of attack and dove into the cab. (a side note: if there was a child in there, I would be a hero) It took a little longer to find the key than planned, but it was found and the truck was shut off. The fire extinguisher hit me a couple times going for the key so it wasn't a problem. Out of the truck to breath then in for the kill. I opened the vent and angled the fire extinguishers nozzle down into the vents and emptied it's contents. Ever pull the trigger on a fire extinguisher? White powder under high pressure, point blank at a dashboard? Needless to say, white power was everywhere, except in the defroster vents. Yep, just smoke and flames in there! Well that was it. Nothing left for me to do. I'm leaving! I reached in the cab and grabbed my lunch box and large thermos of coffee... Wait... OK, It's worth a try. Quick breath and in I go. pouring coffee down the vents. Fire out, some work to do. How it happened and what needed to be done to fix it some other time! Be sure to get that fixed, or at least bypass the heater core with a bypass in the engine compartment. That steam and fog you're not only seeing, but breathing as well! I had a friend who inhaled this mist from his car on a 3 hour trip home from college. It was cold outside so naturally he had his defroster on the whole time. He ended up spending his 3 day Thanksgiving holiday in the hospital with some very odd kidney problems, (due to some blood toxicity) that later his doctor blamed on inhaling the coolant mist a day earlier! Eric, you have to drop the driveshaft...remove the large nut for the yoke, and tap the yoke lightly toward the tranny to remove it. then the seal will be ready for you to pry it out. clean all the rust and junk away from the pinion seal are prior to removal so it doesn't fall into the rearend. I've also found that after you remove the yoke that if you clean it up on a wire wheel it helps. don't wire brush the area where the seal rides, just get it clean to that point, also I've found that a light film of grease around the seal area on the yoke helps it seat better and reduces the possibility of a tear to the seal. Keeping that 3 speed is probably not a good idea. It wont handle the torque and the gear range is not right for a 460. I swapped a 460/C-6 combo in it. Things thats worked ok: Engine Pedastals (You may have to move them one notch forward - I did) Transmission Cross Member and mounting hardware Rearend (most are pretty sturdy) Throttle Linkage Things I had to replace: Engine Mounts Radiator (too small to cool a big block) The driveshaft had to be worked on. The length wasn't right after the swap, and the end that goes into the transmission needed a bigger ?yoke?. I picked up the yoke a junkyard and had a professional drivetrain shop cut and balance the shaft. This ended up being a pain because although I measured the new length of the driveshaft correctly (I THOUGHT) after putting it a few hundred miles on it, things must of have shifted around because the driveshaft began to slip out...(very dangerous, can you say pole-vault?). Although I had some problems with this swap, it was well worth it. Theres nothing like going from a straight six to a well-built 460 and feeling the power! IMHO the better rockers are well worth it with a cam over .525 lift, 280 dur. and the rollers are definatley woth it even just for the savings in friction and they should last longer. i am currently using harland sharp roller rockers (under $200 when i got them) 1.73 ratio and am very pleased. i think they are the best for the buck, bet there are better ones available. if you don't see a listing for the 460, the BB chevy ones are the same AFAIK. And has anyone ever used the "PREDATOR" carb ? is it a good choice, or is a holley better ?? the perdater (my cousin used one) worked very well with crisp responce and good top end. but, the air cleaner holder was cheep (stripped right away) and it was very tempermental. it changed with the weather like no other carb i have seen. and they are not as easy to tune as the predater sales guy will lead you to believe. it sounds easy, but takes just as much trial and error as a holley to get the mixture right. oh yeah, it worked fine on a 390 FE without the street kit (they call it an idle kit i think) that they will try to sell you. (trust me). if i missed something just ask. i know i didn't give a "pick this way to do it answer", but it all really comes down to money and visual appeal a motor like you have (not a big cam 600 hp motor). but if you intend on later on going to a bigger cam, bigger carb, single plane etc, get a good ignition now and it will be there for you later.
