Ok Steve, Nice ascii pic! Just a couple of more questions... What gauge sheet metal did you use for the shroud? What material is the 2 inch spacer made out of? More angle iron? What size and type of pipe did you use for spacer off of the radiator? Inquiring minds want to know :) I've got some flashing material laying on my workbench and thought I could use it to form a new shroud. Just don't want it too look too bad.. True, with true 35's at 60 and 3.25 gears you get 1873 which is lugging the heck out of it but you only need to go up to 3.50's to get above 2k (2017) and 3.86 would get you 2224 rpm :-) My guess is that 3.50 would not take enough of the additional rolling resistance into account so the 3.86's might actually be the best choice but 3.50's could be too it's hard to say since each engine/cam application has a different happy spot. My 351M with 3.50 gears and 32" tires gets between 12 and 14 at 2206 rpms at 60 which is better than I expected with a 4600 # 4x4 :-) The swift of foot and slow of wit have more off road experiences - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Oct 1997 08:21:19 -0500 From: Brian & Jacque Milbrandt Subject: Grills..?? It has no motor now...But the 429/460 is on the engine stand getting ready for installation. The engine is not "stock." No lugging problems. I'm not sure right off hand what the final ratio is on a C6 so I can't verify the RPMs. I take you know the ratio? What is it? Its just that I can't get off the line very quickly with those tires. 40-80 times are great as it can still "kickdown" at 70 mph. It'll snap you're neck! And with those large tires it'll go 10 mph past the 100 mark and start bouncing the needle if I give it more gas. I just had to find out! Think I'm going to try it and if looks awful just go and pull > a plastic one out of the junkyard. You can make nice one out of flashing material but need to prestress it a little by bending it to form the round shape for the fan with a little cone to it. Bend flanges out on the edges to mate with the original shroud mount holes and you're all set :-) It's hard to explain but if you take a piece of paper and make a magaphone out of it and then reduce the cone to more flat..............that's not very good either.........You don't need much cone, just enough to give it some strength, maybe 3" depth or so. You cut the sides with a taper so when you pull the edges together to make the cone the sides come out square...................Shucks I don't think I could even do it with these directions. I guess you need some pictures really, sorry. I know how to do all this stuff but never thought to make my own shroud??? Guess this list is good for something, eh? C-6 is a 3 speed auto with 1:1 top gear. With a wide ratio gear set you can overcome a lot, believe me! My van had the standard gearset and couldn't get off the line with 3.25's, worked pretty well with 4.11's but got really bad mileage. My PU with 2.75's takes off like a scared rabbit with 33's (32 really) and will break traction at 45 if I punch it down to second with 29's on it but it has the wide ratio gear set. With 29's it gets around 12 mpg. It's like having lower rear gears but with an overdrive top end, I highly recommend it for the 460 but probably not for a 302 which needs more gears, closer together. I've always thought a high stall torque converter with 1:1 drive (no tranny) is all you need with a 460 (like a sprint car, only fluid coupled) :-) The swift of foot and slow of wit have more off road experiences - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Oct 1997 11:27:27 -0400 From: Sleddog Subject: RE: 360 Mileage > Date: Wed, 08 Oct 1997 09:13:48 -0400 > From: Ken Payne > Subject: Re: 360 Mileage I've always thought a high stall torque converter with 1:1 drive (no tranny) is all you need with a 460 (like a sprint car, only fluid coupled) :-) That's why the GM 2 speed tranny conversions are so popular with the ford and dodge boys with big motors and cars/trucks built for the 1/4 mile. that, and it doesn't rob as mutch power as the 3 speed trannies and is a lot lighter to accelerate. sleddog The swift of foot and slow of wit have more off road experiences - -- Gary -- +-------------- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 thru 1979 --------------+ | Send posts to fordtrucks61-79 | Send Unsubscribe requests to fordtrucks61-79-request +---------- Visit Our Web Site: http://www.ford-trucks.com/ ----------+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Oct 1997 11:52:33 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: RE: 360 Mileage > From: Sleddog > Subject: RE: 360 Mileage > Date: Wed, 8 Oct 1997 11:27:27 -0400 > That's why the GM 2 speed tranny conversions are so popular with the > ford and dodge boys with big motors and cars/trucks built for the > 1/4 mile. > that, and it doesn't rob as mutch power as the 3 speed trannies and > is a > lot lighter to accelerate. I have a '71 F100 w/FE390 and manual tranny (T-18). 3.50:1 rear and 33" tires. I get 12 mpg. Your heavier truck with lower rear gears will probably get a little less. Especially with 4.56... Are the intakes for the 292ci the same as the 312ci? I'm not really looking into racing this old truck at the strip, but some period-correct, vintage add-ons are what I'm after. (My .sig file shows my truck is a '61 and the engine is a '59 FWIW). If I go with a triple carb setup, (would that look COOL or what?!!!!) what type of effects could I expect? I've got a "stock" 2 barrel Holley on it now. Seems I remember some posts awhile back (about a more "modern" engine) with an intake manifold with multiple carbs getting better low end torque (which I don't _really_ need ;-D) and maybe better mileage..... Since I've got plenty of torque, I would certainly prefer a mileage boost.... Anyone out there care to send some ideas, comments? What the conversion consisted of on the cheap was a plate and spacers to fit the frame where your existing steering box is mounted--has to be welded in, and then a PS unit from any 2 wheel drive from the early mid 70s mounts in the same place. Some tinkering with the steering shaft and of course the drag link are required. I've since heard, the guy updated the kit to using a PS unit from a 78-79 4-wheel drive chassis which would probably be a better way to go. I contacted him too late back in 1991--making money had gone to his head and he wouldn't sell the adapter plate he fabricated without selling a rebuilt PS unit as well and insisting on $400 for the package (earlier he sold the plate, drag link ends and a pump hose as a kit for around $70). Peeved me enough I had a few plate copies made if ever any one should want to do the same thing! So I could sell you one for maybe $30 and you can find any PS unit from a 2-wheel drive that is suitable. E-mail me and I'll send further particulars if you're interested.
