But even when I pay the impact fee, I still have to smog it every year. Now the car has a sticker under the hood that said it conforms to U.S. EPA regulation as of that time. (its a '95 4 banger) OK, now the question. If it conforms to EPA regs, why the impact fee, and why then would the EPA have regs, seeing as every other state has its own laws? And why am I paying the impact fee and then on top, going to smog it every year? something smells funny and its not the brake fluid I wanted to go postal, but I was at the DMV. Anyone got any ideas about this? Im confused and irritated at this point. Thanks Mike ______________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 23:03:19 -0400 (EDT) From: JonP27604 Subject: Spare Tire Carrier If anyone is interested I would like to share this bit of information. When I bought my '65 swb flairside it had the spare tire in the usual place, in the bed of the truck. A few days ago I took the rack that mounts the tire under the bed off my '77 F150 parts truck and put it on the '65. Now my spare is in the factory location. The thing is I have noticed an unexpected benefit. The back end does not shake as much when going over bumps! I figure the reason could be a couple of things. The first is having the added weight behind the axle helps keep it down. The second is the spare acts as a vibration dampener helping to counteract the "shakes." Could this be Fords reason for putting it there in the first place? Any thoughts? Jon E. An Automatic would have more of a tendency to slip and I would think if it was in the engine, putting it in neutral and gunning it you would have something noticeable. I wouldn't count out the U-joints. Number 1 they are the cheapest and number 2 you will need to drop the driveline for both the transmission and rearend. Once my U-joints dried out and the truck shook like a dog passing a peach seed. When I went under the truck and checked them, they seemed OK because there was no looseness in them. Turns out that was the problem, they were solid. So even though they growl and clunk they also have other cute little ways to let you know they are going bad. Good luck on your trip! I suspect your Ammeter is a shunt type. That means it is placed in parallel with a suitable resistance to allow most of the current to pass thru the resistor and a small part thru the Ammeter. The meter is calibrated to give the proper reading. If that is the case then one of the leads from the ammeter is probably open (disconnected) or the ammeter itself is burned out. One way to test it is to disconnect it completely and connect the leads from a ohmmeter to the ammeter, it should cause some deflection and reversing the ohmmeter leads should reverse the deflection. Sure, use the breakerless duraspark setup from a 75 (I think) and later 240/300. Wrecking yards are full of 'em. 300's in trucks or 240's in passenger cars. Grab the distributor, the Black box, the coil, and the connectors with as long of wires on them as You can get. It's an easy install, and a good working system. I changed my FE390 to duraspark and love it. Later I added MSD, which triggers directly from the duraspark distributor. > I bought a "Parts Truck" Long bed 67 with a good running 352 in it... I will be pulling a 18 foot boat and driving to and >from work.. >Thanks for any input > When I got my '71 F100 it had a broken 240/6 in it. When I cleaned out under the seat, I found a trashed little booklet that the previous owner had kept mileage/fuel data in. There was about 15,000 miles worth of fill-up info, and I calculated that He was getting 13.2 MPG with the 240 with a T18 and 3.50:1 rear axle. I have NO idea who this person was or what His driving habits were, but I'm not too impressed by 13.2 ... That same truck with same tranny/axle now has an FE390, mild cam, 4-bbl(edelbrock) electronic ign, and headers. I drive it fairly hard and fast, a mix of city/freeway and get 12+ . You decide.. Certainly the 390 is more powerful than the 240 was. A 352 and a 390 will get about the same mileage. When the 240 in my grandmothers 67 Galaxie blew up, I put a 300 in it. Grandma kept pretty good records on fuel consumption. I don't remember any numbers, but She always said it got about the same mileage or maybe slightly worse after the swap. She said it "had a lot more Zip to it" tho! The 302 trucks usually seem to get the best mileage. Personally I'd go with the FE, but the 300 isn't a bad motor. I'm kinda partial to big sixes myself. Well built 6's can *sound* really cool! If Your boat is very heavy, the FE will probably make You happier. Tell us what the stickers cost, and let those of us who are interested in one decide what we would like to donate to aquire one. You've certainly done an awful lot for us, keeping the list running smoothly, and there's no reason why You shouldn't make a little something on the stickers for all the trouble You've gone thru to have them made. That's how I feel about it anyway.. Only 100 stickers? That doesn't sound like very many.
