As you all know I have a '65 F250 4X4 with an FE, NP435 divorced Dana 24 and 4.56 gears. I want to keep it as original as possible, but I want to be able to get out on the road a little. Cruise at 60 is right at 3000 right now. I'd like to keep the gears, and go with an OD tranny, and get the cruise down to 2500 or so. All of your modern OD trannys have integral bellhousings. The ZF would be good candidate since it uses an adapter to fit even a Navistar, you could modify the adapter, but clutch issues and initial cost ($1500 at the local level)of the trans give me pause. Plus you have that new style stick. Kind of out of charachter in the truck. Plus, I have an iron bellhousing that provides the rear mount for the engine /trans. More modifications. So that leaves either a Clark 280 (?) or NP541(?) 5speed OD. The Clark, if I remember right, has a long throw shifter, and may not be strong enough. So that leaves the NP. I have some questions for anyone who might have run one: 1. Is it the 540 or 541 that's the OD, and how do you identify one? 2. Is it the same shifter throw as a 435 and can you use the original 435 stick? 3. I know it's a 1 1/2 inch input, what kind of clutch set up would be needed? I assume a 391 flywheel/clutch set would do it. 4. Is the 5-speed any bigger than the 435? From diagrams in the rebuild manual, it doesn't look much different externally. 5. Is the front mounting surface the same, and will the rear yoke be the same? I'd like to find a trans and do this before long. I about have my new engine together and ready. Any insight would be appreciated. ------------------------------ From: "Pat" Subject: The Muny Pit Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 09:59:40 -0700 This is reading like a suspense novel about the evil critter. I got a 66 f100 custom cab from original owner for $300.00. Put gas in it and a water pump and started it right up. Purrs like a kitten as he said. Hadn't been started in 10 years. It's the 352-3 speed on column. Really nice condition. The problem is the hood. The roof of his building collapsed causing major damage to the hood. Could someone tell me what years will fit. I found a perfect 64 hood in a yard here, but the guy said It's not his.???? I find that different parts of junk/salvage yards here in New Jersey are owned by different people. Sometimes they don't speak to each other. Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to the FTE site for tips and help. Art >> Pretty much 61-66 are mostly the same . If you find the owner of that 64 I could use a few parts off it as well as others on this list I 'm sure ..
