Assume fuel is $1.65/gallon, you get 12 mpg with your 3 speed and you travel 12,000 miles per year. So you presently use 1,000 gal/yr for a fuel cost of $1650. You can adjust the numbers to fit your truck. Let's assume by adding the 5 speed, you gain 20% in mileage. Probably high, but let's go with it. You now get 14.4 mpg. To go those 12,000 miles, you buy 833 gallons/yr for a fuel cost of $1375 (rounded) a savings of $275. How much is this swap going to cost, $500 at least? It would be nearly 2 years before you saved dime one (cost of swap versus fuel savings). I'm not saying not to do the swap, just that doing it just to "save money" isn't a realistic reason... While my plug boots survived as did the rest of teh engine initially, after a while, the timing gear started to disintegrrate and loose the plastic (nylon whatever) teeth. The 400 your thinking about is teh M block, common with the 351M and not the 351W. It's got a different tranny bolt pattern than your W and would mean a replacement tranny also if you did this swap. In a van Im not sure about wht else you'd need (My 92 E150 doesnt have much room so Id suspect you'd be similar). Elsewhere in the list I recently read about stroking the W up to about 392 or so CI. That might be a better option for you. Torque is what your wanting for that trailer pulling. CI helps and there's no sub for it, but torque gets you where your going! Got it for free about a year ago (it had sat for 4 yrs). Van has 130K on chassis, 50K on trans and about 35K on engine. I replaced the timing chain recently with a steel set (yes, the rebuilt engine had a NYLON cam gear in it, but mind you, it was rebuilt nearly 15 years ago-I have the receipts!) and the 351 is running fine. I rented a car trailer to pick up a N*ssan truck. With the truck and trailer attached to the van (somewhere around 3500 pounds) it really dogged out on the hills. We want to purchase a small travel trailer for camping. I suspect a small (around 20') travel trailer will weigh in the ball park of 3500 pounds as well. We really like this van and have no intentions of getting rid of it, but the stock 351 may not be up to the task of pulling the trailer. A 460 swap is out of the question. I know Ford had a 400 in passenger cars of that era. Would the extra 50 cubes help? I have to deal with CA smog tests for a couple more years, so a 4 barrel carb or headers is a no-no too. Doesn't the 400 share the same valve covers, intake, ect as the 351W? If I used my old valve covers (with the 351 emission sticker) could a person tell the difference just by eyeball? My name is Mike and I recently purchased a very nice '77 F100, styleside, short bed. This truck is a plane jane--power nothing, no a/c, manual trans, 300-6. I even had to buy a radio for it. Doesn't sound too desirable? You couldn't be more wrong! It's a beauty! NO rust, NO dents, good paint (although not original), engine rebuilt at 100,000 (19,000 miles ago), rebuilt tranny, new clutch, runs like a champ--and I LOVE IT! I just drove it on a 500 mile round trip last weekend and it didn't miss a beat. Oil is still at the full mark. This truck needs very little to be just peachy! I'm hoping I can make it to a show or two this summer to show it off and compare with some others--and meet some of you. This is the first Ford of any kind that I have ever owned (sorry!) so I will be gathering lots of information from you all.
