To all of you knowledgable people. I'm never ceased to be amazed at the
variety of information available through this digest.
I'm nearly finished rebuilding my 66 and have a couple of questions:
1. The w/s wipers tend to hang up after two or three swipes, stopping
about 1/3 of the way across the windshield. The motor continues to operate.
I took the whole assembly out of the truck and found that the two wiper
connecting arms have two different numbers stamped on them. One is #440,
and the other is #508. I discovered this after studying the Carolina
Classics parts catalog. They specifically state that you must order this
part by one of those numbers. My question is this, Should not both arms be
the same number on both sides, or did the truck come with one of each?
2. Second question: I want to put new tires on the truck, which
orginally came with size 7.75 x 15. What current day size is most
equivalent to 7.75 x 15? And secondly, what tire will give me the best ride
and handling? I am not concerned about high mileage? Is lower better,
(with standard suspension.)?
By the way, does anyone know where I can find some 61-66 350 fenders?
(for my brother's dump truck).

Thanks in advance.

Parts Voice doesn't show anything out there for DGTZ-9927840-B. Ask your
Ford dealer if the number has been Superseded or Obsoleted or is
Interrchangeable with something else. Most dealers can do this for you;
but some are too lazy! The paperback book they look in is called an OSI or
something like that. Ask to see it when you are there.

Subject: RE: FTE 61-79 - '66 Wipers - Tire Size?

Can't help you on the wipers but the tires will depend on the outside
diameter. I can give you some numbers if you can give me an idea what the
diameter of the tire is. Measure it cross ways so you don't get the contact
patch in the mix. If you can get me +/- 1/2" I can tell you exactly what
metric size is equivelant.

My first attempt, assuming 30" diameter netted 195R98-15 assuming a high
profile bias ply tire. If it's 29" then 195R91-15 and if it's 28" then
195R85-15. These numbers do not necessarily exactly match any that are
available, this is what it calculates to. You will have to pick the closest
stock size to these numbers to get in the ball park. The 195 represents the
tire cross sectional width, not tread width measured in millimeters. The r
number is the ratio of width to height from the rim so any number less than
100 means that the tire is wider than it is thick from tread to rim lip. A
235R75-15 is 75% as thick as it is wide.

Most common 1/2 ton truck tire today is the 235R75-15 which is roughly 9"
wide by 29" diameter and is similar to the old "H" size. To keep your
speedo working properly you should attempt to get the same outside diameter
tire as stock. Width will depend on backspacing, fender clearance and
preferance. Most of us like the look of fat tires but in the rain they are
really not much fun. The heavier the vehicle the wider the tires can be and
still handle fairly well in inclement weather. Some of the older trucks
don't have much room in the fenders so you are limited on width unless you
can find the correct back spaced wheel to offset them to center better in
the fender well.

Lower center of gravity (CG) is a good thing but in a truck that is actually
used as a truck it is a handycap since this also means low ground clearance.
My bronco is quite high with 33" tires but it handles very well due to dual
anti-sway bars (I tested it the other day (not on purpose) and I can attest
that broncos do not roll all that easily :-)), good shocks and springs and
decent tires. Handling is a combination of all these things and even more
so tall or short is not the whole deal, it's the total package that makes it
work or not.

Yeah, but would that cause the Knocking noise? Could the Motor already be
screwed? I don' really want to invest in another motor.... Could it just be
the bearings are gone? or the tappits, or cam are making a noise? I also
have a theory that the arm that runs from the cam to the pump could be
hitting on the side of the engine? but I don't know. I guess the only way
to find out is to tear it down. Thanks for the help guys!

I don't know if anybody has seen this, But I thought I should say something.
It is on Page 128 of the December 1999 FOUR WHEELER. It says "Power Steering
Swap".....B&H has developed a power steering kit for 1967 thru 1977 F-250
4x4's using a Saginaw Power Gearbox. 4 turns Lock to Lock. All you have to
do is drill 2 holes into the frame. It replaces the "Ram Type" steering
setup. There address is: B&H Used Pickup Parts-------Department

Does anyone know the towing capacity of a '70 F100 with a 390/C6 with
3.50 gears, according to Ford specs? Yesterday I hauled a buddy's '73
F150 4X4. It weighed 5,900 lbs on a 2,500 lb trailer. I didn't have any
problem with hills, but getting stopped was interesting, with manual
drums! Oh, and the three ton bridge was interesting, too!

I was cruising wrecking yards today and came across a 1970 Pickup with a
good set of green door panels and a green passenger door armrest for
$10. While it's not perfect, it is green and quite serviceable for a
driver vehicle. Don't ask about the driver's side because I purchased
that for my use. There are also good doors and interior parts, tailgate
and a few underhood parts (no motor or trans).

Let me know offlist if you are interested, I could make a trip back next
weekend.

Christopher!

You're the man, and I'm CERTAINLY not going to give you "heck" for makin'
such a wonderful decision as that!!!!

I did almost this exact swap a while ago-- in a '76 F-250 4x4-- everything
works the same for what you are trying to do with your truck. I'm
strapped for time right now, and I'm not sure how the Archives on the FTE
site work, but my message about "360 to 300 swap" should be in there
somewhere from a couple months ago. E-mail me privately if you can't find
them.

All I am able to come up with are "mounts with motors incl." or

have no extra room for other trucks in the dooryard.
If anyone can point me in the right direction for motor mounts
for a 460, ( I think all 2wd.trucks from '73-'79 are the same mounts,....
