We for anyone that may be interested and living near the St. Paul Minnesota area (or willing to drive). I find that it looks like time to part with my beloved. No, not my wife, my 1979 F250 XLT Crew Cab. I am only the forth owner and it has only 115,000 on it. Runs great has very little rust (spent most of it's day in N. Dakota) and has most of the optional equipment. Just rebuilt the C-6 last year and the 460 still has good power. If you may be interested just let me know. I want it to go to a VERY good home. I had the same problem with my 1979 F-350 4x4 here in New Jersey. I called Desert Valley Auto Parts in Phoenix, AZ....1-602-780-8024 and bought a rust free bed. Some may say it was a little expensive, but I don't think so at all. They sent me pictures before I bought it....It looked great in the pictures (even better when it arrived in NJ!!!) I paid $800.00 for the bed, and $400.00 for delivery from AZ to NJ. There is no rust.......was never any....and I would have paid more for it. I know for a FACT that TABCO makes a complete bed with tailgate. It is made out of thinner metal in my opinion, because it rusts out too quick. If you buy the bed make sure you get the tailgate with it, because your original (or NOS) one will not fit correctly!!! I have seen this bed in person, not to bad looking....BUT rusts quickly if not properly taken care of. It is a bolt together (like a Ch#) and ain'y half bad, BUT I wanted a factory original bed. Any questions...just ask!!! I don't knwo what the 3750lb would be, perhaps towing weight? I >don't have my book in front of me and my 67 doesn't list this. The 3750lb is the weight rating of the axle. Ford 9" axles come in several weight ratings. The parts books usually show one that's like 3200-3300lbs, one thats 3600 lbs, and one that's 3750lb. The 3750 should have 31 spline axles and HD axle bearings. I've got the 3750lb axle under my '71 F100 and the wheel bearings for mine cost something like $75 each instead of the $30 ones that most of the other axles use. Sigh... It's not Steve VS FTE list! Steve loves the FTE list! I wouldn't drop FTE simply because I tire of the weekly engine wars, but I DO have to drop some mail lists so I spend less time in front of the computer and more time on other projects. The engine wars just makes me think that maybe it wouldn't be so bad to drop FTE for a while to get that extra time I need. I thought about it a while last night and dropped 2 other lists, so that will help for a while. I probably will drop all the email lists, including FTE sometime in september so i can take care of other interests and projects before the rainy season gets here. If I do, I'll probably be gone for a couple months, but someday when the days are short and the rains get here You'll probably see me poke my ugly head up and spew forth a bunch of strange formulas and goofy electrical circuits on to the list once again... I have found a complete 75 front end suspension, with all brake lines, booster, master, prop. valve, etc., for $75, (including wheels), sounds like a deal to me. The question is - I know I can change the spindles out, but what would be the pros and cons to just swapping out the complete I-beams as opposed to pulling the kingpins, and would the 75 I-beam dimensions the same as 69? Also, two fine points - would the 75 springs be a fit for the 69 (assuming engine specs were similar)? Mine are getting a bit soft (some previous owner put two of the twist-in helpers in one side.)? If I go the I-beam-swap route, it makes sense to me to replace some bushing at the same time. I have not noticed any comments of stock bushing versus urethane, any comment? Any other suggestions for this exercise? But that's > > the beauty of them at idle. WHat do you have total, like when you walk on > > it? You want about 40 degrees in an FE. Mine's timed 10 initial and 41 > > total. This one especially. This cam idles at 900 rpms to make that 16 hg, and it takes a minute or two to get up there(what's up with that? starts at 13hg and the needle wiggles a little bit) I'm running 40 degrees total coming out the breathing side though. I'm going to try to decarbon the rings by putting some 20w and a quart of ATF in and running it for a while. I think that the advanced cam might have been blowing down the cylinders and let carbon grow under them. If you get carbon under your rings it will have blow-by and will keep on building it up. Any other suggestions on chemical decarbonization? I also think that it could have been detonating a little at >2500 cruise with it set that way. I had no idea what the timing really was, but could bear a knock at about 55 up(cruising only, it didn't seem to do it under accelleration). It doesn't do it as far as I can tell anymore. Of course that could have been the fuel pump eccentric rattling too. I went for a banzai run Sunday afternoon, running through 3rd and up to about 75mph in high(4.56's and 31.50 in tires) It hit 6000rpms pulling strong, but had sucked the float bowl dry on the Q-jet as I went for 4th, had to let it catch up, then it swallowed it whole again. Jeez, this thing weighs 4800 lbs but goes up to 70 like a car. It will flat a** run. My son drove it to school for the first time today, and he said that he got quite a reaction when he fired it up and they heard that chunkety chunkety idle. A real happy boy you can bet. > > 16 lbs of vac at idle is plenty fine. Is your vac gauge rock steady? The entire ignition switch assembly can be removed by rotating the outer chrome ring counterclockwise. The ring should have 3 notches in it that are 120 degrees apart. If you damage this ring, I can mail you one that came from a 68 F250 (assuming they are the same), or perhaps a locksmith could sell you the special tool for cheap? It's on top so you need a mirror. Check those #'s against the title, if they don't match you've got problems. How does this work? I helped do an R&R on one of these beasts the other day, they are a beefy trans, but shift control is extremely important or they will tear the planetary out when they get confused and downshift to low at 65 mph. That's what happened to this one. Replace the controller every time the trans is redone. (this one was a Jasper rebuild and still had the original controller, and two outstanding TSB's that weren't done when it had been rebuilt ) The TPS is important too. If it's out of spec, it will shift too hard or too soft. If it's going to work hard there are some changes to make to the valve body too. The TSB's on this trans need to be addressed if you get a "builder." They haven't always been done even when they've been rebuilt. The place that rebuilt this one for us made a darn fine trans out of it by setting it up to engage lockup right after it goes into third instead of halfway through second. The place that did it was Buessick's Transmissions in Leopold, MO. They are the best I've seen for late model trannys. - -- Come on over to my Back Porch http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.ldd.net/scribers/ballingr Ballinger ballingr == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 02:37:18 EDT From: JUMPINFORD Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Disc-brake swap questions I'm not sure about most of your questions, but I do like urethane bushings.
