Interesting comment, John. I'd be interested in hearing what else you did to your 400, other than the carb and manifold. It might save me from wasting allot of time and money on a 400 build. later, dale c '79 351M == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 11:25:47 -0500 From: ballingr Subject: FTE 61-79 - Mystery Solved-Disaster avoided I found out why my timing on my FE (with cam of still unknown origin) had to be set at 25d BTDC initial, and where some of my engine noise is coming from. I pulled the (badly leaking) front cover this weekend and man what a mess. It had the two piece fuel pump eccentric, but the tab wasn't in the dowel hole, and they used some kind of cheap flat washer (what happened to the stock hardened one is anyone's guess) to tighten the cam bolt. The eccentric was really eccentric now. When I took hold of the cam gear, you could move it back and forth a noticable amount, and of course the front cover had a chewed ring around where the cam gear and eccentric runs. I pulled a one piece one and hardened washer off of an old dead 390 I had laying around and used it. The timing problem, I don't really understand. I expected the cam to be retarded, or off a tooth, but it wasn't. It was set to the advanced keyway. (multi-index sprocket) I set it to the straight up one. Before it had to be at 25 d initial, now it's at 12d, but I think it will likely end up a little bit higher, since it isn't pinging, and it seeems just a tad slow. One thing I know is that straight up it is a good running engine, retiming it's like taking off a choke chain, I'm really surprised at how much more power it's making in mid range. The idle is a little choppier but makes 16hg of vacuam at idle. I still have rattling wrist pins and skirts, but over all the engine is considerably quieter. Still has more blow-by than it should have, but man what power. Thanks to everyone for following this thread and for your responses. I never would of guessed advanced, the way it was running, but it is a fairly hot cam for the application. - -- Come on over to my Back Porch http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.ldd.net/scribers/ballingr Ballinger ballingr == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 10:17:09 -0700 From: sdelanty Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Radiator overflow bottles >Anyone retrofit one of our trucks with an overflow bottle? Sounds like it was on the verge of self-destruction to begin with. Did You change the rad cap? Maybe the new cap opens at a little higher PSI and finally killed off an already ailing heater core. I have put wire down the tube and had the same experience as you. Clean sound and no resistance. I think that there is something floating in my tank and when the fuel gets low it sometimes gets near the inlet and clogs it up. Either keep gas in the tank or get it flushed out. If you can't remove the tube to inspect it because it is soldered in than you will have to take it to a shop to have it removed and that would be a good time to flush out the tank. Of course the cheapest way is to keep gas in the tank.
