If you really want a pavement scorcher then why mess with HD axles which are not supported by the after market and are also heavier etc.?? Why not (if you are going to buy another truck anyway) get an F-150 which has all the right stuff to make a nice "Sport Truck"? I like fast and powerfull and would like to have a HD, either 250 or 350 but I use them as trucks and have the extra power just because I like it and to pass traffic as needed, not to drag race Blazers. It's purely personal and my way isn't the right way necessarily but If I wanted to race blazers I'd set up a bronco or F-150 myself that's all. It's easier to do and they can be made to weigh less for the same performance levels etc. so I was just being smart (and incredulous) :-) BTW, 460's rule! :-) Greed is the Creed of the Breed that did away with the Steed Visteon, Delphi..........:-( - -- Gary -- == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 08:43:51 -0500 From: John LaGrone Subject: FTE 61-79 - gasoline pickup tube Jerry, I can't remember anyone mentioning this. Nice swap but not cheap! Why waste your money on a barely adequate tranny known for weaknesses which cannot be modified out of it when you can have the E4OD which is made for the 460 in the first place? The C-4 could be run up to 650 HP too but that was for drag racing where the rotating mass was a consideration and they broke them a lot too I'm sure. I wouldn't even consider something like that for a 460 myself but TEHO :-) Since the E4OD can be setup to run without the stock computer as a retrofit there is no real objection to using it now right? Ron, You probably have a defective/worn out ignition switch. When you turn the key to "start" all of you warning lights should illuminate for bulb check. That portion of the circuit wears out over time causing symptoms similar to what you describe. Sometimes the lights will flash while you are going down the road for no apparent reason. The reason I think this is the problem is because your oil light should not be hot when the key is off. The light comes one when you have no oil pressure, right? If it stayed hot when you turned off the engine (ignition), the light would stay on all of the time. I guess I'm confused.........the damper is on the crank so is timed only to the crank. You cannot change that relationship without disassembling the damper. If the cam timing is off one tooth you should be able to tell some serious performance problems and the spark timing may make up for some of it but the spark is timed to the crank not the cam, the cam just drives it and doesn't care where it is in relation to itself......did I missunderstand your question? Could you use some thin wall soft copper tubing and "sleeve" the inside of the fuel pickup tube? Haven't tried this but seems if the ID of the original pickup tube is big enough then you could slide another tube down inside it. If the difference in ID wasn't too great then you shouldn't loose much fuel flow. But for now its running great. But altimitly what is the oil purpose? Thanks Ethan ============================= Ethan, Assuming that you meant that the coil was leaking its a bad sign for the coil. If it was a new coil I would exchange it right away. The oil is how the coil cools itself and is essential to its life. We used to have an old Allis Chalmers tractor that had an AC-Delco ignition on it (it ran on lpg). The ballast resistor went bad and the tractor started eating ignition coils. First the coil would overheat, then it would puke its oil out, and finally fail. Happened once while I was in the middle of mowing a hay field. Tractor shut down like I had turned off the key. Scared me 'cause I thought I had done something wrong and blown up the tractor (I was 13 at the time). Did you make any other ignition mods? In this case the hydrostatic head would be less than or equal to one psi. This does not take into account length of fuel line to the carb or possible line restrictions in this calculation. I'm not sure if this would make that much of a difference. Jerry, have you changed gas caps before this happened. It used to be behind the seat but it was removed and the hole was body worked over. I'm not sure that I like the location of the fuel tank to be in the bed. I've had others tell me that usually if the tank is behind the seat you can smell gas inside the truck. Is that usually true? Can a tank be placed under the truck? I think I would like it back behind the seat again. Where's the best place? I put a transgo (I think) in one and it did exactly what I wanted, shif hard and fast under load and easy when cruising or with light throttle. The rebuild kits mainly come with seals and cast iron rings for the pump and clutches but bands are usually a separate item, sometimes not though so make sure. I'd highly recommend the racing version of the band and a 5 plate first gear clutch if you can find a kit and while you have it open slip in the wide ratio SVO (E4OD) kit, you won't believe the differance off the line with tall gears (for good economy). My next C-6 rebuild will have good racing band parts in it and a median shift kit (RV). I cut the band on the last one I did but you risk having the friction material peel off when you do that so I don't think I'll do it again, I'll buy one made for fast shifts in the first place. Tell your dad not to open the valve body unless he has a good pictorial instruction for the check balls. There are 4 (as I recall) and no way you can tell where they go without a picture. Pay very close attention to keeping EVERYTHING clean especially the governor. The floating piston will gall very easily and once it does you can't fix it, you have to buy a new one. Is that usually true? I would definitely take it out of the bed! Whats the point in having a truck if you cant load the bed up with stuff from the wrecking yard / home improvement store / camping gear ....? I've heard lots of people say they can smell gas, and lots of people say they can't. Mine is in the cab and I haven't noticed any smell while working on it (I haven't been driving it since I got it). I have heard some claim that it can be a safety hazard if the tank leaks from the cab onto hot exhaust components. I want to move the tank from my 66 to underneath as the extra space behind the seat can be pretty useful for keeping tools, jumper cables, etc. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 08:36:50 -0500 (CDT) From: bkirking Subject: FTE 61-79 - Calling the central Texas FTEs Is there any interest in the FTEs in the central Texas area meeting labor day weekend? For a step side truck, the problem is where to put the fill spout. I looked into this for the 5.0 SEFI conversion on my 66 stepside and didn't see an easy way short of custom making a LOT OF STUFF. I also didn't want the tank outside of the frame rails for safety reasons. I finally settled on using a low pressure and high pressure pump set and left the tank in the cab. I agree that it would be nice to have the area behind the seat available for tool storage and such. By the way, I have never noticed a fuel odor to speak of, but then, SWMBO says I cant't smell anything anyway. Tank location has been discussed but based on racing rules I would venture to guess that inside the rails in the center of the truck is the safest. Racing rules universally require that no line or tank can be within the driver compartment and 1/16" steel plate must separate the driver from the tank compartment and must be fully welded in, solid to seal it. The tank must be located above the rear axle and as far forward as possible without entering the driver compartment which usually means over the axle hump. You can't locate it over the axle hump in a truck but near the center of the vehicle is the least likely place for it to be damaged in a crash, which just makes sense if you think about it. OTOH, I've never heard of any problems with the tank in the cab in the ford trucks so is probably not really a concern. If it is then you can weld in a steel plate like the racers do and be fairly confident it will protect you nearly as well as the floor would. Course that's a lot of work......:-) Don't recall ever smelling gas in the two I had :-) Greed is the Creed of the Breed that did away with the Steed Visteon, Delphi..........:-( - -- Gary -- == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 09:32:12 -0700 From: Dennis Pearson Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Ford Prevails again! 360 Thanks for your message at 11:34 AM 8/12/98 PDT, Ethan Hawke.
