Because of demand, I am going to begin with the 64-66 Ford pickups standard interiors, and then the custom cabs. It was also an option for the standard cabs to be able to order the custom cab interiors. I will, when the project is complete, be able to duplicate the seat upholstery, visors, door panels, and headliners. If you are interested, and have the originals, I would work with you on replacements for your 66. Anyway, the axle had about 1/8" of end play. I should have broke out the dial indicator, but forgot. This rear end is the original and has roughly 250,000 miles on it and never been opened. The bearing was in good shape and the race was nice and smooth - no pits or scrapes or anything. It was in good shape considering when I bought the truck there was about 2 cups of gear oil in it. It's even 31 spline. Looking at the axle and looking in the manual, there should be *some* end play. If there wasn't, the bearing wouldn't last very long. I fear that they will total him for less than what I can fix him for. Well, John, I don't know if it would play on 'the other driver's' insurance or not, but maybe this will help in the future. My first love is restoring/restifying old Datsun Z-cars (the truck is to haul parts, etc.). I have mine insured on what is called a 'stated value' policy. If you put a lot of work into a vehicle (of some collector's value help's further) keep all your receipts, and have it appraised (go where you will get a good one) and then you can have it insured for the appraised value rather than normal book. (I am using this right now, for two weeks ago a retaining wall collapsed on top of my '71. Since the same insurance co. denyed the homeowner's claim, I am gonna play this to the hilt - "Bondo? There was no bondo to begin with, there won't be any when it is done! And the hatch lock is trashed, that means ALL lock cylinders must change to stay keyed alike!) In the case of a '79 truck, it would at least assure being at the top end of things. Maybe you could back into this one by having it appraised as it's value before the crash by a specialty shop and then confront the insurance co. with that info if need be. I put an Edelbrock carb on my '73 F100 (360 cid, C6 trans). I went ahead and bought the adapter, which made the hookup super easy even for a shade-tree hack like me. You could probably fabricate one, but why bother? The previous owner of this truck burned up the tranny because of a maladjusted (stock, not Edelbrock) kickdown linkage, so I did NOT want to screw up the linkage when I did the swap. Hey folks! Seems like we recently beat the subject of overheating to death. Now for something completely different: Underheating! My 75 360 seems to run too cool. Both the factory and a (questionable) aftermarket temp ghauge confirm this. Even with a new 195 'stat I get very little heat in the winter. It just never seems to heat up. I have the factory flex fan and shroud. I've seen the gauge hit 180 after shutting off, then drop to 140 soon after a restart! At one of our Olds club chapter meetings we had noted expert Pat Goss speak. He's the guy from the PBS show Motorweek and runs his own shop in the DC area. WELL, he said since the 360 is basically a big truck motor it came equipped with a flex fan that moves SO much air that it really can't heat up in a light truck application. So, to put that theory to the test I tried running the 360 flex fan on a 77 F250 400-2V. Guess what? Same temps as an ordinary aftermarket flex fan (200-ish) and good heat in the winter! What gives? Everything has been working fine for the past month or so until this evening. I noticed that the steering wheel would pull towards the left off and on. It would start usually when accelerating the engine, like on takeoff from a stop light or getting on the on ramp of a highway. When I got home I started to check the fluid level in the P/S reservoir, P/S fluid was coming out of the dipstick/filler tube. The steering wheel still wanted to go towards the left. Then fluid started spewing from around the pressure fitting on the pressure hose at the pump. I then shut down the engine fearing a fire, because it was spaying P/S fluid right on the exhaust header tube. I initially thought it was the steering valve in the steering box was hanging up. But now I kind of suspect that the P/S pump may be the culprit. I'm using type F trans fluid in the pump. I used new hoses when I installed the P/S. I'm pretty sure the steering gearbox is the Ford (off a 71 F100 2WD) and the pump was out of a 70 Torino. It hasn't been leaking, and I did bleed the system with the wheels off the ground. The pump did seem a bit noisy even after bleeding, kind of a 'moaning' noise when turning the steering wheel. Any thoughts or ideas? Azie, what exactly are Auxiliary transmissions? If they are what I think they are then it might be a solution for my F500 gearing problem. The rear end ratio is 6.20 and the tires are 7.50 x 20 and 36 inches in diameter. I ran some calculations to get engine rpm at different speeds and this is what I came up with. 1000 rpm = 17.28 mph 2000 rpm = 34.56 mph 3000 rpm = 51.84 mph 4000 rpm = 69.12 mph 5000 rpm = 86.40 mph These numbers are based on the transmission being in forth (1 to 1 ratio). The engine produces max h/p at around 1500 rpm. So this would leave me with a top speed of around 35 mph! That figure would be consistent with my forced experience (don't ask.) It would also explain why the engine has a governor on it. Jon E. You put everything into your project and some dope louses it up. People don't understand(besides us)how much it bothers you. Of course, most people don't understand why we restore old trucks either. I've been through the insurance thing myself. Just stand your ground, and don't think that the first offer is the last one. They will negotiate. If you can't get satisfaction, sue everyone. When the owner of the molester gets a civil summons they will (in most cases) get their insurance company to reconsider their position, especially if they carry a couple of cars and homeowners with them. I think they'll likely fix it without a hassle. If it were an old work truck you might have a problem, but yours is obviously in good repair, and like a new one cosmetically. I'll bet they'll take care of it. Not coincidentally, >that was the same year of the first pollution control devices. Pollution >control is the only reason thermostat temperatures were increased. I, in my experience have not had any trouble with overheating with a 195 t-stat in a healthy system either. Here are a couple of my reasons for using it in my stuff. Purely unscientific. It provides a shorter warm-up period. The engine gets up there quicker and makes my defroster work. I work evenings, so I use it a lot more than most people. I run short trips for the most part, so my strategy includes a 195 t-stat and keeping the system clean, and in tip-top shape so that if asked to run 100 miles it can do it. Cleaner emissions due to the above. Why do I drive an F250 4X4 and worry about emissions? I'm just that kind of guy. Anything I can do to get the engine warmed up and off the choke quicker will result in lower emissions, and better driveabiity. I don't like having to qualify to my passengers i.e. "she's a lttle cold-natured" every time I wake it up under 60 degreees ambient. The Q-jet I run provides a wonderful idle and light throttle mixture, but the electric choke (this would apply to any electric-choke carb)is made to have a short warm-up since it comes on everytime you start it. If it's around 60-70 degrees out and you park it for 1/2 hour you have to be careful not to flood it, because the choke closes the same as when sitting overnight. If it doesn't hit the first time, you have to invoke the unloader, just like it is flooded. From 75 degrees up it is no problem. You just wouldn't want to have to increase the choke spring tension at all, like you would if the warm up were longer. So, as short a warm-up cycle as possible is necessary to run in the choke's "comfort-zone." I don't have scientific data to back this, but I think that water pumps would like it better. Pumping that cold heavy mixture has to be more work. The pump itself would do better getting up to temp faster. There should be a little reduction of scale in the system since you are circulating a warm stable mixture sooner, and the cold stuff less. It will hold a warmer mixture in the block and keep it warm for when you run in and get a few things at the store. Just my thinking though. I don't intend any of this to be a refutation of anything you've said, merely a statement of what I think from my experience. I went through the electrical system and got everything working. My brother-in-law builr the engine and trans, and a comepletely restored interior followed. We had so much labor in it that we wrote some of it off to preserving a fine car. It ran and drove like a dream. So powerful, and handled so well The body needed quarters and one front fender. The body man ran a little one man shop and was supposed to be the best in town. It took the guy two months to do the body and paint it. It cost $5000. It made me sick when I saw it. The drivers door shut flush on the first latch, and to get the second one we had to slot the pillar behind the latch! The passenger side quarter had a visible sag to it, which matched the paint which sagged too in a foot long spot along the bottom! The left front fender was hitting the hood! Utterly disgusting! It is hard to find a good metal and paint man these days, and it will get harder as the good ones retire. Almost everything that gets torn up now either goes out the door hacked up or it goes to a junkyard. If you can't change a panel it's either totalled or should be considered so. I'm not saying all shops are bad, it depends entirely on the work-ethic of the guy doing the work. Metal work is labor intensive, no bones about it. But if they say they can do it, in my book, they need to take the time to do it well. That seems to run counter to the way things are nowadays. I ended up taking it to my high school, handing the keys to the and a blank check to my old teacher and said "Make it pretty". 3 weeks later I had the deepest darkest Metal Flake Blue GTO in the city. You would have thought I'd spent about 2 or 3 grand on it but it ended up costing me about $60 for the paint and another $45 for the pizza party I threw the guys that did the work. > It is hard to find a good metal and paint man these days, and it will > get > harder as the good ones retire. > > == FTE: Unsubscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Jul 1998 15:34:51 -0500 From: Bill Adams Subject: FTE 61-79 - Advice on dealing with Ins Co. (was Shoulder to cry on) Date: Fri, 3 Jul 1998 12:15:09 -0500 From: "John LaGrone" Subject: FTE 61-79 - A shoulder to cry on Deepest sypmathy on your loss. I know how you feel because in February my 66 F-100 was molested by a peice of Jap Crap driven by an Idiot with with severe cranial anal inversion syndrom. (head up his butt) Luckily my Daughter and her fiancee, suffered only minor injuries. The idiot rear ended my Effy while adjusting his radio, Effie's rear bumper was bent under, her tailgate was warped beyond repair and she was spun around and thrown into a pole thus ruining her chrome front bumper, and bouncing the fan into the radiator.. Effie was driven home, the piece of Jap Crap was towed to the scrap heap. Then the real problem began, dealing with the other guys insurance. They of course thought that since I live in the sticks and drive an old truck that I was just some dumb**sed redneck driving a junker. They thought they could screw me good. The adjuster even told me during our first phone conversation that my 66 couldn't be worth more than $600. Ten minutes after I was off the phone she called my 17 year old daughter and offered her a $500 settlement telling her that that should cover all her medical bills and leave her a couple hundred to spend. Daughter told her to stuff it. (Daddy didn't raise no fool) In the end I got $1800 from the ins company, several local body shops estimated the damage at $1500 to $1700. Daughter's medical claim is still unsettled. ( I never saw anyone from the Ins company face to face, not even the guy who appraised my damage, it was all handled over the phone or by mail) Now some advice. Don't get all upset and yell at insurance idiot, no matter how much they deserve to be yelled at. Speak politely, and make sure they understand that your truck is not a junker but a restored classic. Speak softly, and make perfectly clear that if they don't deal honestly you will get a laywer. I mailed the adjuster, a photo of my truck before the accident, that showed her that it wasn't a junker. Gather any receipts you can on things you have done to your truck, parts, paint job, etc.. Send copies to the ins idiot. Gather some advertisements from national advert magazines, like Hemmings, or Old Car Trader which are trying to sell trucks in similar condition to yours before the accident. Mail or give them to the insurance adjuster. (In the end, what the ins co's appraiser sets the cost of repair at will probably be deciding factor, but if they know in advance that you know what your truck is worth the appraiser will probably give you a better price) Call your insurace agent, If you have full coverage, they will fix it and then get their money out of the other company. ( This is the easiest solution, I couldn't use it because I had only the legal basics + uninsured motorist.) My Effie is just about completely fixed when she's finished I plan to get stated value coverage. Find experts in your area who can appraise your truck accurately, and are willing to write a letter to the insurance company if necessary. Speak politely to the ins idiot. Speak politely to the ins idiot. Be pleasant with the ins idiot. Don't choke the ins idiot. (no matter how much they may deserve it) The Insurance adjuster I dealt with really was an idiot, who richly deserved to have her butt kicked. If the fact that she made it obvious at the start that she intended to give me nothing for my truck isn't enough, the fact that she offered my daughter $500 total settlement should prove it. They may have left me with an unfairly bad impression of insurance people in general. The company I dealt with was one of those which sells to people who have DUIs and such and can't get insurance anywhere else, That may have had something to do with my difficulties. What started out looking really bad, turned out to be OK, I've got just about every thing fixed, Even found a factory original rear bumper, got a new radiator, replaced a few things that needed it and had enough extra money to buy a 5 horse 20 gallon air compressor and some tools to use with it. If you have any specific questions email me, I'll be glad to give any advice I can. >John Wrote >Less than a year ago I finished 18 months of intensive restoration on Henry >including new paint and new interior. So far everything I have seen has been dented or rusted out so bad I can not use it. It seems to be a common problem that these fenders are dented right at the top of the flared curve by the grill. Wonder why? Anyway, color is not important as I will be stipping it down to bare metal. Has anyone ever tried putting a 3-pt. seat belt system on a 61-66 F100? I have seen several advertisements for these seat belts, but I am not sure if the sheet metal in the cab of my '63 is strong enough. It is either go with this type of system or a regular lap belt system. Any comments or suggestions?
