I wholeheartedly recommend the carter or edelbrock over a holley.
Better low and midrange response, easier to tune, doesn't leak,
no power valve to blow, etc. I've had both edelbrock and holley on
my FE390 and the edelbrock wins hands down for reliability, driveability,
and tuneability...

Ismael, Kurt, and all FE pickup owners,
I just got a copy of the Doug Thorley catalog and this is what they list
for FE motors

drive part #
68-76 352-390 Pickups (fenderwell) 3/4 ton only 4 264
65-76 352-390 Pickups all (no F350) 2
203

There is a note at the bottom of the page: "Part numbers followed by a
'Y' indicates that the header is of our Tri-Y design. Part numbers
without a 'Y' are 4-into-1 design".
This bummed me out bigtime!! I guess this means that Stan's is the only
source for Tri-Y headers for FE equipped pickups.

Best bet for most truck applications is a set of Tri-Y headers (Stan's,
Thorley, ??)

Based on my limited experience it would seem that the hardest thing
would be getting the steering colum right. Body mounts could be made
without too much effort with some very careful measurements. Maybe some
engine compartment sheet metal moved or trimmed.

William,
Checked out your web site, Nice truck!!! I'm starting to like the lines
of the 65 models more and more. There is a guy here at work who has
one, Bright yellow step side -- really beautiful. It has a 383
chrys.... lets not go there.

Which motor is your rig running? It looks like it might be an FE, is
it? It also looks liky you have an aluminum manifold, which one are you
running? What sort of fuel mileage do you get out of this setup? I've
seen the Mr Gasket spreadbore adapter and thought a junkyard Q-jet might
be cheap to try and see if I like the setup.

TIA
Tom H.

I like the Rochester Q-Jet myself, even with the adapter. I don't really
understand why the adapter is a detriment, as it directs the secondary
flow forward creating turbulence. I would like to hear more about the
theory involved if one (or any) of my fellow enthusiasts would care to
enlighten me. If you want a square bore my choice in this order is the
Carter AFB or Edelbrock clone(my brother-in-law says that they are
stingy about the completeness of the setup, so be prepared to adapt)or
the Autolite 4100 second only because rebuildable cores and parts are
getting pricey, and they like the 2100 will heat soak more than the
Carter for some reason. I still like the Q-jet best though. With the
problems my engine has(lots of blow-by and loose forged pistons)the
tailpipes are burnimg chalky. You can pull it indoors and hardly smell
the exhaust, the Holley as lean as I could get it to run would make your
eyes water immediately. I don't think any other carb could manage the
fuel and air any better.

Can a 428 be bored out to a 427 bore size. Yes I know it seems like I
have that backwards but the 427 has a shorter stroke and larger bore
than a 428. The 427 bore is 0.100 larger than the 428. this seems like
too much to take out. How do they do it when they manufacture the
blocks? Do they cast a 427 with a larger bore and the correct thickness
cylinder walls, or are all blocks cast the same and then punched out to
the correct bore? If the latter was the case then a 332 could
theoretically be punched out to a 427 bore.

I have a question for the transmission geniuses among us-
This morning when I pulled the pan off of my transmission
(c-6 I think), there were two wedges in the pan. My transmission
does not shift into second, so I am guessing these are the intermediate
bands. My question is- can I put these back in easily, and is it worth
doing? If it is too much trouble, it will have to wait until I pull the
motor
this fall.

Loved the Pigeon Forge show!!!!! I hope to at least be able to drive my
truck
there next year.

There are a TON of 205's out there in the field, and other than paying the
local Dana/Spicer depot to do the job, I'm at a loss. It's such a simple
box I think a DIY rebuild is probably do-able for many of us.

I would be GLAD to. A DIY rebuild is a simple process, but you need to
know a few stupid tricks to get both shift rails to insert, to get shift
forks to fit (and how to put the pins in), how to check end play in the
idler shaft without all the idiotic special tools, etc.

I will work on this and post it on the discussion group when I have a
draft, so you guys can add your coupla cents' here and there. 400 heads
are better than one!

Tom: Why so bummed out? Stan makes, IMHO, an AWESOME set of headers. And
Doug Thorley doesn't even own the business anymore, he lost it to his wife
in the divorce (according to Stan). Stan's been quietly making them in
Auburn WA for 30 years and he does a heck of a job. Heavy steel, chrome
plated, tri-y, nice welds, and the best gaskets and flange design you ever
saw.

I kinda like supporting the little independent guys. Stan is one of them.
