The posting by Bill Ballinger about the Qjet on his Edelbrock caught my eye. This is a combination I have wanted to try but wasn't sure it was worth the time to get the bugs out. I have a 390 in a light F-100 with the 2 bbl now, have an Edelbrock Performer in the garage with a Holley double pumper Q-jet replacement on it that is certainly not the answer to any question I might have asked for my stock 390. I have some Q-jets on hand also, but with the hassle of changing these manifolds just have not taken the time to put it all together. The Holley was fun to drive around on the primaries but had to really have the revs up to not bog on the secondaries. If it didn't bog I was gone, but so was the gas. Anybody else having some luck with Q-jets? The Mr. Gasket adaptor I have is open in the center but the manifold is 2 plane with a divider, should I do something to extend the divider up to the carb base, or leave it all open? Any ideas would be appreciated. = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 07:05:54 -0400 From: "THE PAVIES'" Subject: FTE 61-79 - RE: F100 springs Hellwig manufactures progressive-rate helper springs that bolt on to your already existing springs. They dont do anything to the normal ride of the truck until you start puting a load on, then they start to help out when your existing springs begin to flatten out. I have them on my 76 F250 and work great when I put my 2500# slide-on camper in the back. You can buy them at RV centers or I see Whitney has them on sale for $145 = 2500# and $178 = 3000# capacity (catalog 407J). But I also have tires mounted that are rated to handle the weight. You may have to do some searching for a tire that fits an F100 AND has the weight rating you need. I'm still playing catch-up here and just starting to read last Wednesday's posts and it's now Sunday morning so someone else may have already answered this post the same way. Sorry if thats true. I found 2 places: the door post and a metal tag on the passenger side firewall. Anyone know where the 3rd place is? Can someone decode these VIN numbers for me? These are off the tag on the firewall: (top line) 295 F25BMDH5405 16 (btm line) 46 33 4BR 20K 7 . One more question: Did I see a post in here somewhere aways back where a person has a bed off a truck from Arizona? If anyone has something similar for sale (with tool box on pass. side) I'm definately interested in getting an idea of what that costs. The rusty bed on my F250 is coming apart - I have it held together in the back with nylon straps. And it makes some really gawd-awful banging noises when I'm driving. Please respond via e-mail if possible. Hopefully one can be had for a reasonable price. My wife doesnt exactly share the same feelings that I have for the truck and has threatened to spend equal amounts of dollars on our kitchen. Of course I could always buy myself a welder and try to fix the bed- I'll have to ask her if tools count since we have other vehicles around that I could use the welder on also, so it wouldn't neccessarily be just for the F250... 76 F250 360 C6 90 E150 4.9L C6 95 F350 7.3L Powerstroke Crewcab 4wd and 67 VW Bug - stock 61 VW Single-cab Bus .. = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 09:02:27 -0400 From: "THE PAVIES'" Subject: FTE 61-79 - RE: engine rebuild/replacement Steve- I was reading your post (from last Wednesday) where you said "You send the block, heads, and crank off to the machine shop for whatever work You need on them." Well, duh! I hate to show my ignorance but what "work" are you talking about? I've rebuilt VW engines before (about a million years ago) but I don't recall that anything ever had to be taken over to a machine shop for them. I remember using a new crank, new heads, new rods, etc. The VW engine case was either good (undamaged) or not good(beat up from a broken rod or whatever). So, what has to be done on the block, heads, and crankshaft at a machine shop? I appologize to all the experienced people on this list that are sitting there saying "This guy MUST be kidding!". I think somebody said here before about taking a rebuild course at your local CC. What's a "CC"? I'd love to take a course like that. Minimum is having the block "boiled" to clean it and new cams bearings put in. It's also a good idea to have the cylinders measured for taper and out of round. If they're out of spec it'll need to be bored and you'll need to get new pistons. There are quite a few other machining operations that can be done to the block also. The crankshaft needs to be measured and turned if necessary. The heads well the need to be cleaned and disassembled, the seats reground new valve guides, new valves, springs & retainers, etc. - ---------- > From: THE PAVIES' > To: 61-79-list > Subject: FTE 61-79 - RE: engine rebuild/replacement > Date: Sunday, May 17, 1998 6:02 AM > > Steve- I was reading your post (from last Wednesday) where you said > "You send the block, heads, and crank off to the machine shop for > whatever work You need on them." It only costs a couple of bucks and they may let you do it for free. Or, if you are in need of some gravel, buy a specific amount which they then will weigh on their scales while in your truck and subtract the difference. I did the same thing for my 77 F-150 when I needed to know its weight for my DUI distributor's curve. Hi everyone, Just thought I'd send a little note about the trucks at the show this year. SWEET! Although everyone here knows about the Super Nats, Pigeon Forge also has the Classic Che*y Show at the same time. And everybody else with hot rods and trucks shows up for the weekend as well. We sat out and watched the cruising Friday night, and it was sweet. Ken, sorry I didn't make it to the parade and the meeing on Sun morn. My family drug me to Gatlingburg to waste my money. If I missed anything, please let me know. BTW, I had a few people ask me about the name tag. They said they would check the web site out. Well people, I had a 4 1/2 hr drive through monotony and I'm tired. I met up with Ken and the rest of the gang that were there and spent time or met almost all who came. Had breakfast this morning with about 10 from the group. I drove my 67 F100 longbed and had it at the show. I believe I was the only one from the 61-79 with a truck there. The parade was awsome. It was great fun to drive in the parade with all the other beautiful trucks. Can't wait for next year. Those of you who were there and didn't have your trucks must try to bring them next year so we all can stake out a corner of real estate and have a little community like other groups. The show was great...... My emergency brake light will not go off. I have a wiring diagram and still cannot locate the d switch. Does anyone know were it is and how I go about changing it or making it work or something. I would really like it to work. Emergency brake works great. Speedometer: ever since I swapped the 3 spd tranny and installed a C-6 the speedometer is 8 mph off. It registers too fast. Also the needle bounces a whole lot until you get going about 30 or 40.. I replaced the cable during the restoration but not the gear that goes into the transmission. Any ideas out there? While at the F100 supernats I found a new instrument cluster that will hold 5 or 6 round gauges and I am really considering changing mine out and installing 6 VDO gauges. Will going to a new gauge help this problem? Have noticed other minor problems. While driving back from Pigeon Forge I stopped at a rest area in Georgia and left the truck running with the A/C on (SWMBO) was waiting in the cab. Took about 5 mins. When we got back on the road the truck seemed to be real sluggish like it wasn't getting gas but cleared up within 15 or 25 seconds. Is this possible vapor lock due to heat. It was 87 outside. Or do I have some other problem ready to rear its ugly head. The truck is real nice and those who say it at PF liked it. I just want it to be finished..... Garry I have also noticed that my power steering is acting up. I had the gear rebuilt prior to finishing the restoration. Steering makes noise. I am suspecting the pump may be acting up. Can these be rebuilt or can I just purchase a rebuilt one? Its hard to describe the problem but I just know it not right. = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 21:39:46 -0500 From: Jim Henjum Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - '79 F-100 problems Ryan Dorman wrote: > Then pull on the axle, it should come out. The othe way I read in my Haynes manual is to put the tire on again (loosely) and then pull on the tire. It creates better leverage. I learned all about these 9" axles after the side gear in mine cracked and stripped the axle shaft. Also, what is the right way to get >the rear wheel axles out? The center hole on the rear drums has a bit of outward flair to it, and is a very tight fit over the outer end of the axle. The flair is there so when You tighten the lug nuts the hole in the drum grabs the axle quite tightly and keeps the drum centered up. Often, its grabbed so tight that the drums don't wanna come off. If You take a propane torch and gently heat the drum right around the center hole it will expand slightly and let go. Be gentle with the torch and keep the flame moving around the hole so You don't hot spot it anywhere and warp it. I have to use the torch every time on my F100, but it doesn't take much heat. Not even nearly spit-sizzlin... maybe 180F or so. When mine are hot enough they will make a nice *PING* when they let go, and then they just slide right off... Had to do the same on my uncles bronco when I put brakes on it last month..
