NOT the tire pressure, but the actual radius of the tire. this does require some attention. i THINK all posi 9"ers are 31 spline axles. here is what i suggest. find a $50 9" complete assy with a posi and 31 splines and swap it in (check it out good first tho!) or get a 31 spline center with posi and axles and correct wheel bearings to put into your housing. i am sure someone like moser, strange etc, can get you a posi for yours, but i think going with stock ford 31 spline posi is the cheapest way. can't help with numbers, but usually the gear ratio is on the ring gear stamped. there's more, but now my fingers are tired. maybe later i can tell you how i made two different 9"ers into one unit including getting the rust off the ring gear enough so it will rotate in record time and made a couple pulls on it without breaking so far it is still in the truck. and i mean those gears where rusty! sleddog ps-go to the library. some of the 4 wheel mags have good articles on the differences between the locker/psoi/open/spool/torsen/etc - ---------- From: jniolon Sent: Monday, June 01, 1998 4:17 PM To: pre61-list Subject: FTE 61-79 - rear end question O.K. your rear end experts...help me I've been looking for a limited slip 9" 28 spline chunk for a while and gathered a little information...just enough to confuse me I see the names traction-loc, an equal-loc, limited slip etc...nad I understnad some have clutches..some don't ??? Pros & cons for a street truck using a 460/C-6 combo Ive found one that has the stamping C6AW on the differential case (where the ring gear bolts on) and 9D30 somewhere on the body of the differential case (I'm saying "case" to identify where the differental side gears mesh.. and differential carrier is the front portion of the chunk that everything is bolted to, that's what the ford book calls them anyway) I don't have the complete chunk so no tag, I also have another full chunk sans tag..tell me what to look for please can anyone tell me if this is a locker, limited slip or what I see no clutches only gear clusters Your assistance oh great ones, please !!!!! john = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 10:52:33 -0400 From: Tony Marino Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Guage Help Hey Dave- I was the one who started this whole ordeal on guages, and I haven't replied to all of the great people who helped me with my problem because my plastic membrane plug ripped right off when I CAREFULLY tried to remove the regulator, and since then I haven't had a chance to solder up the new one to see if that was the problem, I haven't opened my mouth. I see that you have the same stainless steel grill that I do. Got >mine off a junked '66. The bed is a '57 to '60 style bed. Ford used them on the F100 4X4 through '65, and the F250 4X4 through '66. My wheelbase is only 120 in, where the fancy bed trucks are 129 in. The reason they used them is when they had the unibody, they had a poblem with flex, so the 4x's got the old style bed. I also think that it interchanged with phone truck beds and the optional stakebed, so why change? I've had people get almost hostile when I tell them that it came that way. There's a picture of one just like mine in Moses Ludel's "F-series Owner's Bible", and in Jim Allen's "Classic 4X4's" As for the grille, I think it's an NOS '66. A counter old-timer at the Ford dealership (former line mechanic) said that it's possible on the 4X's to have the new grille, or an older one even. (say's he's seen it before) I also have an NP435 which wasn't supposed to be available until '66 (the code matches) They built them out of leftovers or whatever they had on hand. If they ran out of something they got an old piece (or a new one if it was in the plant) He also said that they were special ordered so they were built on a demand basis usually to fill fleet contracts. Thus they were run through pretty quick with the emphasis on drivetrain. The fit and finish on the body was pretty crude, bolts left out etc. The wiring requires a '63 '64 and '65 diagram to get the colors to match and it appears to not have been replaced. He said that this was common too. They weren't made to the same finish standards as standard trucks, if you think about it who could anticipate one lasting this long the way they were worked to death. Did anyone on the list work at the Kansas City plant in '65 and could substantiate all of this? All of this said, it isn't the one that came on it, so I'll say it's an NOS '66. Love that old beast, it really is someting else. Now that it's lined out it drives as well as any truck I've ever had. SWMBO hates my "hillbilly" truck but has said that she can't believe I could get it as nice as it is, being what it is. Could you explain how you get > better mileage by doing this? I was refering to the fact that carbs, in spite of the other advantages EFI has, still render better mileage and performance in most cases but the fuel smell is objectionable to most of us so by venting the carb bowls and tank we eliminate the only objection to the carb :-) It doesn't improve the carb's economy but allows you to use the carb and thus gain the economy advantage over the EFI but without the typical complaints about the smell :-) I promised Jason on the bronco list I would refrain from adding to the EFI/carb thread anymore so I'll do that on this list too after this statement: EFI has all the "potential" to easily replace the carb but untill the OEM's "fix" the ego and jealousy problems between technicians and managers etc. and test labs and politicians become more honest in their data it will never happen. It's a shame really but I'm not in that loop so as long as I can legally modify my old trucks and run carbs or untill there is a truely efficient and adjustable aftermarket kit available I will run a carb :-) Mike Wesley has proven that it can be done now all we have to do is wait for the big three to buy him out and bury his research so they can go on with their nothing research and public hype, dragging their feet and stepping on each other's toes so nothing gets done and when they finally do get somewhere the EPA or Sierra club or women's lib or the Gay community will find something wrong with it and legislate it into inefficiency again..............:-( That's it, I have no more to say and you can take it any way you like but I've been watching the industry from the inside for 33 years and don't expect to see any changes for the better, it's getting worse if anything, sad to say :-( 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! - -- Gary -- = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 08:38:26 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Wide Ratio > Date: Mon, 01 Jun 1998 23:57:28 -0500 > From: Jim Craig > Subject: FTE 61-79 - Wide Ratio > We have had an extensive conversation in the past about wide-ratio > C6's. Mine was for a 460 swap so it's possible they don't have one specifically for the 351M, not sure but I believe the manifolds exit similarlly and the outlets are the same size so it may still work but can't say for sure. 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! - -- Gary -- = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 10:31:10 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Cargo lamp in a supercab > Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 20:48:01 -0700 (PDT) > From: "Daniel H. My 67 standard cab ranger had one mounted on the back of the cab, almost at the roof line and the switch was mounted in the dash on the right side of the steering column near the ash tray and looked a lot like a head light switch. I liked it so much I kept the whole thing when I junked the truck. Some day I'll put it in something :-) 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! - -- Gary -- = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 08:59:40 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - rear end question > From: jniolon > Date: Mon, 01 Jun 1998 20:17 -0400 (EDT) > Subject: FTE 61-79 - rear end question > I've been looking for a limited slip 9" 28 spline chunk for a > while and gathered a little information...just enough to > confuse me > > Ive found one that has the stamping C6AW on the differential > case (where the ring gear bolts on) and 9D30 somewhere on the These numbers don't tell me anything, probably casting part numbers. The real number is on a tag bolted to the outside of the housing if it's still there. > I see no clutches only gear clusters If you have the third member out and can see the carrier the limited slips have a clutch pac integral with one of the side gears which connnects it to the inside of the "Carrier" which is the central part the ring gear bolts to. There are a couple of slots in the carrier you can look through to see this setup as I recall. An open diff will have just two simple side gears which look the same and some pinions connecting them. The difference between the clutch type and gear type is that the clutch is a flat cone shape with disks similar to a motorcycle clutch which are activated by torque applied to the side gear through the axle. The natural taper of the gear teeth act as cams to force the side gear with it's integral cone surface against the clutch pak which then contacts the carrier and effectively locks both axle together through the carrier via the pinions which connect the two side gears together. The gear type has a jack shaft with gears on each end which interface either with the side gears or the pinions and set a minimum gear ratio interface between the two axles so that they can not rotate more that that ratio different from each other. It's more positive than the clutch type in that one wheel can never spin with out also pulling the other with it at some ratio such as 2:1 up to 5:1 with a Torsen, not sure what the True Trac ratio is. The jack shaft is the weak link in these since the shaft has to withstand all the torque of the drive shaft multiplied by what ever the ratio between the axles is. This is considered to be the best all around traction device for all applications except mud bogging and drag racing where a true locker works best but is not as strong as an OEM clutch type with 4 pinions or a true locker such as the Detroit. 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! - -- Gary -- = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 12:32:22 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - '72 Ranger > From: "Jay Fleming" > Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 00:11:07 +0000 > Subject: FTE 61-79 - '72 Ranger > I'm new to the list and to the world of Ford pickups. I understand that for most highway driving that > the fuel economy numbers are pretty comparable, but here's my Here's the low down: FE's of any kind will bolt up as a direct replacement with no changes except swaping a few external emissions parts and accessories etc.. This includes the 330, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427 and 428. Clevelands are in the small block family and the 2v version is roughly equivelant to the 351M but are not interchangeable. 351C, 351W, 302 and 300 I6 all share the same transmission mounts but have different engine mounts and may require new drive shafts, radiator and other parts due to location or temp requirments. 351M/400 and 429/460 share the same trannys but not engine mounts and the 429 and 460 will probably require a larger radiator. Pick your poison but If it were me, I'd try to find a junkyard FE engine of some kind and bolt it in. If you just want to tinker and spend a little cash you absolutely can't go wrong with the 460. It's a very sweet engine and competes well in economy with all the 351 and larger engines of any series when properly geared and set up. 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! - -- Gary -- = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 20:54:46 -0400 From: Ken Payne Subject: FTE 61-79 - Junkyard flunkies I went to the junkyard today to pick up a windshield I purchased on Saturday. Its a "pick-n-pay" place but they insist on getting glass themselves. When I paid, I specifically told them I wanted the glass off the baby blue 72 F100. It was perfect. Today, I get there and the windshield had a small amount (1" - 1.5") of fog along the bottom. I was shocked, this glass came off another truck and I told the flunky who got it (not the owner) that I didn't think it was off the right truck (there are 9 67-72 F100s there and the blue 72 was the only one with perfect glass). He said it was and that the foggy area was covered by the rubber and chrome. I didn't believe him but I didn't want to argue. I was there during lunch and didn't have much time so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Well, I get home, pull the chrome off my current winshield and cut out a small piece of the cracked window rubber. Guess what? The window only goes 1/4" into the rubber! This means there's 3/4" - 1.25" of fog showing! The puller was simply lazy. The truck with the perfect glass had mud all around it and I guess he didn't want to get his shoes dirty. The receipt I have says the window should be from the 72 Ford. Guys/gals, I'm PO'd. This glass is worthless to me, I even told the guy on Saturday that I wanted the glass from the blue 72 because I was restoring mine. There was only one blue 72. I called an hour before I picked it up and let them know I was coming. I stated on the phone that it the glass from the blue 72. He said, "yup, I remember". Foggy glass sticks out like a sore thumb, especially if I show it - I can't use what they gave me. Here's how I think I should handle it, but I need some input from the group: I'll go back tomorrow and go in the yard and check the blue 72 truck....
