Don't remember the exact year, but sometime around when the LeMans was 1st introduced in the Pontiac line and it was a different trimmed out GTO body, the Munce transmission plant burned and the standard 3 speed in both the GTO and the LeMans was FOMOCO from the factory. If I'm not mistaken it was '64/'65, but this is just an old mans recollection. The Saginaw power steering units are used around the world, as are the saginaw rack & pinions. I work for Chrysler and we use both of these widely. The cost is the key here. We can buy them cheaper than we can make them. Yep, I always change my air filter at the same time as the oil, so I use a hunk of cardboard from the air filter box as a funnel, folded into a "V" pretty much like You just described it... It will take a few ours of painstacking sanding but it is well work it. I saw this steering wheel on Sunday morning just prior to leaving to come home. He did a superb job. It was nearly impossible to find a flaw. I thought he had somehow found a new steering wheel. Looked great. I'd highly recommend it. I'm putting a 61 390 (out of a car) into a 1963 truck. I've had two opinions on this so far. One says to buy the V8 motor mounts for the year of the truck (was 272). The other says to buy the motor mounts that fit the engine (out of a 61 thunderbird). Which is it? If the '63 frame is the same width as the '65 (and I don't know if they are or not), then you should buy motor mounts for a '65 352. (That was the 1st year of the FE offering in trucks I believe.) If all else fails, take the motor mounts from the '61 Tbird off and take them down to the local parts store and see if they are the same as the ones for '65 with 352. Did your '63 truck have a V8 or 6??? The stanchions are different I believe between the V8 and 6, so you might have to get the stanchions from a '65 or later also. I'll leave this to the guys that have been there and done that. I haven't. I guess my only real concern is the motor mounts. I already know the C6 will bolt up, the exhaust is shot anyway, but will I need different frame mounts, different motor mounts, or neither? Accessory brackets are only alternator and A/C so I'll just try to get a motor with that stuff already in place. Is there anything else I need to be aware of when contemplating this? 1st off if you are contemplating bolting the C6 off the 360 to the 429/460 forget it. Both used C6's, but they have different cases. They are not interchangeable between FE's and any other series. The guts are, but the case will not bolt up. 2nd - getting an engine with all the accesories on it is a good idea, but I've done it in 3 different trucks, and had to make my brackets/mounts for the A/C and pwr steering in every case. The steering box is in the way on the drivers side and it seems that something on the passengers side interefered with the Alt location also. Can't remember. Anyway I've done it to a '79 and two '77s. All with A/C and Pwr steering. Its a pain with the cab on, but if you pull the cab(at least the front clip) it is much easier. L & L is the only mfg of motor mounts for this application that I am aware of and they get roughly $100 set for them. They also make brackets for mounting all the accessories, but they are also pricy. I'm very pleased with the performances of all mine after the conversion, but it is a pain in the butt. For every day use I prefer the '72 and later because they are low compression. The earlier versions are more powerful, but they require premium fuel. Even a very slight oil leak will keep the chatter problem returning over and over again. All of the area around the inside of the bell housing has to be cleaned of everything. Dust, oil and etc. Do you have your cover on the pivot arm? Stuff from the road will get in through there and do it to ya again. Some folks drill a hole for the relubrication of the release bearing and do not reseal it (seal it up too). There is a pilot bushing or bearing in the flywheel for the transmission mainshaft, replace it too. It will cause the disc to jump around severely. Trans may dribble a little oil too. Make sure its mainshaft bearing is a solid fit to prevent the mainshaft from bouncing the seal lip and leaking. There's more but I better stop for now. Nothing I own is new. I know all these things and I've tried all the tricks - New clutch disc, resurfaced flywheel, new pilotshaft bearing (actually on FE it's a bushing) and new clutch release bearing(throwout bearing). No oil anywhere in the bellhousing. After a few thousand miles the darn thing chatters. I've just learned to live with it. I'm too old to care anymore. You need to get together with Ted over around Wallace. With a nickname of NC ridgerunner, and he being from Chinquapin, you probably have a lot in common. By the way!!! Do any of you know what a Chinquapin is???? I do. If you don't, ask some old farmer. The FOMOCO tag that should be under one of the screws that holds the floatbown on is long gone - removed by some previous owner. I have no idea what # it is. (One of the square bores I have is a 4300, so I guess both of them are as they look identical.) The primaries are 1.435" and the secondaries are 1.955". Keep in mind this is measured with vernier calipers, so some margin of error is expected. The North/South distance between mounting holes is 5.625" and the East/West distance is 5.135". I think this was off a '78 Lincoln, but I've got 4 different 460's now and have had at least 3 others, so I could easily be wrong about this. Thats all for now. If anyone else wants more info, just let me know. Some background info. I bought the truck 3 years ago from a guy. He told me that it has a 351C 4V engine in it that he got out of a 73 Grand Torino. The engine has a 4barrel carb on it, without a choke. (no air flow adjustments). He also swithed the steering column in the truck but, I don't know from what. The wires have been spliced together and when I first got the truck, some smoke would come from under the dash. I have not had that happen it 2 years now. The exhaust system has rusted all the way to the exhaust manifold, so I get exhaust fumes in the cab. Also. If I fill the tank with gas, I get gas fumes inside the cab as well. The truck has power brakes but, they don't seem to stop like I like them to. (shoes all around). The steering is power also and has alot of play in it. Here is what I want from the truck: 1. I would like to be able to drive the truck daily. 2. I would like better mpg. 3. I would like to be able to tow small loads with out it being a problem. Here is a list of questions I would like some help with: 1. The truck gets about 8 mpg. What can I do to increase my mileage? 2. What carb should I get? 3. How should I handle the wiring on this truck? 4. What can be done about the play in the steering? 5. What should be done abou the brakes? 6. Any suggestions on the engine. (should I keep, rebuild it, swap it etc...) I would also like to say that I am aware that some money is going to have to be spent but, I am limted in the amount of funds I can use on a monthly basis for this "hobby". I don't have a fortune to spend on fixing this truck but I REALLY don't have the money to buy a new one. So if I could spend a little at a time for things here and there that would go over better with my wife. I know this is long but, I really would like to keep this truck a make it work for me. Please give suggestions and tips on how to reach my goals with this truck. Thanks in advance. P.S. - the body is in okay shape. The left fender, light housing and grill need to be replaced but overall it's in good shape. That's about enough for me for awhile... The problem I see with too much list-splitting is that each list ends up with a smaller "information pool" than with one larger list. If someone on the 61-79 list asks a question, maybe someone on on the pre-61 list or Ranchero list has the right answer, but isn't gonna see the question because he/she doesn't subscribe to the 61-79 list. Just because someone isn't on "your" list doesn't mean they don't have an answer to Your question, and too many lists just makes it harder for the "question" and the "answer" to get hooked up. There *is* strength in numbers, it greatly increases the knowledge base we all benefit from. How many models and years of trucks has Ford produced? Is each and every one going to have it's own list eventually? I'm not saying the rancheroo guys don't deserve their own list, nor would I prevent them from having one even if it were in my power, but I hate to see the knowledge base get split up too much... This almost always occurs in a metal fuel line between the carb and pump and is usually with a mechanical pump. Heat from the engine is absorbed by the metal line which causes the fuel to literally boil in the line which causes it to be converted to a gas which is expanding due to the heat. The mechanical pump cannot overcome this pressure and force the air into the carb bowl so the line is effectively blocked. Remedies include going to an electrical fuel pump which usually can manage sufficient oomph to push the blockage into the carb bowl, where it exits via the bowl vent. Another thing to do is replace the metal line with a rubber one or putting a wooden clothes pin on the fuel line. Don't ask me how this last one works but for sure it does.....
