I couldn't decide how to do it, either put the compressor in the barn and pipe air to the garage or visa/versa but either way I had to run a pipe between them because I couldn't see any good reason to have two compressors. I had some 160 psi black plastic water pipe left over and decided to use that since I didn't anticipate needing over 125 psi line pressure for anything so that's what I used. Woke up Sunday feeling like I had been lifting weights due to the digging Saturday to bury the pipe. (Used a mattox to keep the 40' x 24" deep trench narrow) Anyway I used all 1" pipe from the existing 3/4" pipe in the garage to make sure we had enough volume to run the 3/4" impact. Eventually I will replace all the 3/4 with 1". It's not as expensive as I thought it would be. She's all done now with no leaks and potential for 5 drops, 4 near the lift power supply for lift safety lock, paint, air, and air tools (with oil) and one at the end (capped off for now). Looks pretty awesome. I'm taking pictures as I go and will try to get some kind of web site set up with all this stuff eventually but for now just picture pipe large enough to jump up and down on without bending :-) Now I can dig the rat wall, shore up the outer wall which keeps caving in from the rain and put the 30# felt all around the skirting and posts to prevent frost lift and pour the floor, hopefully within the next few weeks. I'll keep y'all posted. My poor bronco has been waiting patiently for this to be finished so it can have the surgery it needs and my truck too and then there's the cars that need tires rotated an my daughters truck' oil change............:-):-):-):-) Haven't even started on the bathroom yet......:-( Don't know when the party will be but I'll certainly send out invitations to all on the lists who might be in the area when it's done and the party is scheduled. You might need a heavier shock too but I would just put the springs, get it aligned, and then see how it does. If the 351M is too heavy for your shocks it will just wear them out prematurely. >Also, how do I tell if my torque converter is locking up properly >or not? > Your truck is not equipped with a lockup torque converter. >Sometimes even after driving for a while my choke >seems to remain closed - I put it in neutral and it holds high >revs. Any ideas as to what this could be? BTW the heat riser >from the crossover is broken. > I am assuming this is an auto choke but not electric? If so, it relies on the heat riser to tell it when the engine is warm so it's no wonder this isn't happening since you say it is broken. If it is electric, you need to make sure you have 12V at the contact when the engine is running. If so, you may have a bad choke coil. >My plan is to rebuild the five-oh after a year or so and put it >back in with an OD transmission (or maybe 5 sp) if $$ allows. >Thanks for your help. > If you put the 351 springs on it, the front end will be too high when you put the lighter 302 back in. _ _| ~~. I have a 1973 F-100 240 6. Sometime last year the subject of door panels came up and a source in Tennessee (I think that's where) was mentioned. Anyone remeber where that was? Anyhow I need a new steering wheel or at least a good used one. Any source ideas? Our local dealer stocks them but $190 is a bit more than I'd budgeted. Junkyard ones are all like mine, craked from the heat. I live In Tucson AZ. My 240 doesn't ever run hot here. It'll get just past the middle of the gauge running at 80 on a really hot day with high humidity. YMMV. fjm = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 09:34:47 -0400 From: am14 Subject: FTE 61-79 - FE's Bill Ballinger writes:>>Didn't they change the width of the thrust bearing somewhere about '63-'64? I learned the hard way that the motor mount bolt pattern is different between pre and post'64's The later blocks interchange to the early ones, but the early ones are lacking the holes for the later mounts. Not sure about the thrust bearing change - could very well be true, and I've never ran into it doing some of the cross mating that I've done over the years. I always tried to purchase bearings for the year of the block, so that would have prevented me from finding this one. The motor mounts were changed somewhat in the time frame you are speaking of. I thought it was '67, but that could very well be wrong, and is if you know that the pre/post 64's were different. If the front end is sagging too much then you need stiffer springs. Swapping the ones from the truck that donated the engine is probably the best way to go. The purpose of the shock absorber is to dampen out oscillations in the spring. They allow you to maintain controll of the truck when you go over bumps. Stiffer shocks will reduce the wheels ability to rebound over a bump. If taken to the extreme it can actuallly reduce handling. One other problem my dad and I had with stiffer shocks: we put a set on a 76 crew cab. They had a lifetime waranty which we used 4 or 5 times because the shocks were so stiff the truck beat them to death, broke a couple of them. Good luck with your truck. Sounds like you have a pretty nice ride. I bought a 1979 F150 custom in January. This truck originally came from the factory with a 302 and 3 speed manual. I exchanged the engine and transmission with a 1978 351M and C6. The extra weight has highlighted the downfall of the I-beam front suspension (front wheels lean inwards) Can this be remedied by swapping out the front coils with the ones from the donor truck or do I need to get heavier shocks? I thought about doing this too, but if the engine does not get to a "Normal" Operating Temp, this is not good either. I was unfamiliar with the Colorado Legislature's meeting schedule. Since the article was in the June 98 issue, it probably hit the stands in early May. I am glad that the measures failed. IMHO, common sense must prevail. BTW I, too, will be going on summer break. Unlike Stu though, my computer will retrieve my e-mail, so I am remaining subscribed to the list, but I will probably get way behind. I can't solve it all but here's a few suggestions. I had a 67 m100 (still do) with a 11" LUK and a 352 (360 now). It never chattered until I put the 360 in, you see the 360 leaks a bit off the back of the intake and kinda fouls the thing up a little. It is pretty good, but not as perfect as it was (didn't chatter at all, you could dump the clutch all day). I also had a 71 f250 4x4 with a 360 and an 11.5" H.D. Ford clutch (3 fingers). Boy did this thing ever shake! The 3-finger clutch is much more prone to vibration. Also, the engine seeped a bit out the back seal. On top of that, the transfer case mounts were not new anymore. I would recommend the diaphragm type clutch over the finger type clutch hands down. Much better pedal action too. I would agree that you shud check all engine mounts and drivetrain components. One other thing you should be careful of is the clutch release arm between the frame and the engine. If this is loose or able to vibrate, you can have some kind of resonant vibration between engine (moving) and frame (rigid). I am putting a dual friction centerforce on my 410 in my restored truck, and am redoing the t.c. rubber mounts, clutch mechanism, and all that. I'll be surprised if it chatters. marko in vancouver marko = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 10:42:10 -0700 From: Marko Maryniak Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - What is it called? >Too bad he's not looking for a '67.
