Re: FTE 61-79 - What is a Camper Special? ======================================================================= ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 05:56:48 -0500 From: "James Elliott" Subject: FTE 61-79 - Brakes, booster pushrod adj. etc. In regards to the thread about bad feel and stopping with a power brake conversion, and the following comments about adj. of the pushrod. Doug gave someone dimensions of the pushrod setting for .980-.995-in. Not that this is wrong, but my experience with other brands, when changing master cylinders on a brake booster, that depending upon the variance in the "well" of the master cylinder piston (where the pushrod goes), SIGNIFICANT adj. of the pushrod may be required. On the conversion to my '69 I am doing now, I bought a rebuilt master cylinder from the go to replace the old one I got with all the other parts (for $20, why mess with is it good or not?). Measuring from the flange to the bottom of the piston "well", there was .160-in difference in the two master cylinders, so I pre-adjusted the pushrod the corresponding direction (in this case shorter) by .160. I should have all this complete this weekend, so will know if this works out right. Given differences like this, it is easy to understand that no matter what the book says, significant adjustment may be required no matter what. On some vehicles, because of master cylinders beig superceded by new equivalents, I have had to adjust by as much as .375-in. to get the function right. I can speak from experience and say that if the pushrod setting IS off, it WILL make a significant difference in stopping, pedal feel, etc. Personally, I would have tried this befoe buying a new combo. (I'm doing this to get more displacement with the correct casting numbers-I have a perfectly good '76 390 in the truck now)Also, can the original 2bbl be modified to work well with the larger engine? Thanks. My I6 240 with 1 bl Carter carb. has had the very same symptoms--->gurgling while coasting in gear...stops when shifted to neutral and also some blue smoke at start up. After the timing was adjusted and spark plug wires changed, the gurgling/backfiring stopped almost completely. The blue smoke at start up continues. This is a circa 1965 engine with 172k on it. Somebody else (again, sorry) mentioned it might be connected to the computer on a late model application. So check this out. A freind of mine just got back from vacationing in Yellowstone. He was telling me all the tales of woe concerning his RV. The RV is built on a Ford E-350 chassis with a 460.(Ford content : ) ) Anyway, after buying a few tires and an alternator, and wishing for a fuel injection system.( Holley Pro-Jection in the works ) He said he parked on an incline and his Onan generator crapped out on him. It wouldn't start again no matter what he tried. So he spent the rest of his vacation and the drive back to Texas with no airconditioner. He started tinkering with it when he got home and found out it had an oil level sensor that cut it off. Same time that happened the starter solenoid petered out, that is why it wouldn't start again. So why couldn't some industrious and adventurous person go to their local RV or generator shop and buy a sensor setup for an Onan, then install it in their oil pan and hook it up to a light on the dash? It is apperrently self contained and needs no computer system. Sounds like a plan to me. It was equiped with A 460, dual tanks, sliding rear window, a/c, special wiring harness, overload springs and an extendable bumper(?) from the factory, as well as dual batteries and a 140 or 160 amp alternator. does yours have all of this? ______________________________________________________ == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ End of 61-79-list-digest V2 #446 ******************************** +----- Ford Truck Enthusiasts - 1961 though 1979 Trucks And Vans -----+....
