While I have not made it to the Fall meet before, if it is like the Spring meet, it is a general show, with an accent on swap meet, rather than a strictly truck show. It would be a great meeting place for some of us in the northern reaches who can't make Atlanta this year. If any of you are interested, let me know, and we'll get together Saturday the 12th. If we can't all get together at the same time, look for a "well fed" guy with light brown hair, a reddish beard and a "Grover" t-shirt in the vicinity of a Tempo and a Kelty tent, or somewhere in the swap area looking longingly at something he can't afford! - -- Don Neighbors '54 F250 Named Grover "Any dropped tool or part will automatically fall into the most inaccessible part of the vehicle." grover == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 10:28:54 EDT From: Bluforest Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Truck Sitting in Yard, Waiting to be Painted Regarding the truck that needs painting, and anyone else that needs paint and body work but is low on cash, here's what I did. Our local college offers classes called ROP, open to anyone, and free. You can take them in auto body either all day Saturday of two nights a week. All it costs to fix up and paint your truck is the cost of the paint, about $30-$40, all tools, the paint booth, etc. is free. Spent all day yesterday removing rust, instructor said I did about $400 worth of work in one class day, for nothing but my time. I highly recommend doing the painting yourself this way. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 08:54:05 +0000 From: Don Grossman Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Twin Traction beam JUMPINFORD > This is for all you crazy fabricators out there. Someone else might help you with the engine & tranny. My guess on the engine would be if you get it warmed up good at least once a month it should be all right. But if it isn't being driven, I would want the truck on blocks to save tires (keep the tires treated too) & wheel bearings. The bearings can go bad from sitting in one place -- I had to replace front bearings on my '67 after it had been driven only a few times a year for several years. They were a pitted, roaring mess. The truck will be sitting for about 6 months to a year at the max. I do start the truck about 2-3 times a week. Does anybody have some good tips to keep the engine and tranny in good condition? Should I put something in the fuel tank to keep the gas fresh? Should I do anything to the radiator to keep that from leaking? Any suggestions if anybody has had to let their truck sitting for a while would be great. Thanks Warren 78 F-100 351M 78 F-150 XLT 351M .............. If a vehicle sits long enough, then rust can form inside the axle assembly (anything not bathed in oil). When you drive the vehicle after storage, the rust will fall down into the oil, go through the wheel bearings, and then the wheel seals. A rust + oil mixture would damage just about every component inside the assembly. It seems logical to assume that the trans could suffer from this potential problem as well. I don't think idling in park will lubricate the trans as well as being in gear. After years of searching, I finally found an original factory grille guard on a '66 f-100. I need to know from anyone out there who may have one on their '65 or '66 if this guard I've found will indeed fit a '65. The seller seems to think there may be a discrepency, as neither of us has actually seen one on a '65, only a '66, and he can't confirm a part #. I know the '65s and '66s are virtually identical trucks, and in my '65 owner's manual there is a picture of one, but was it an actual option in '65 or just a prototype and not actually sold until '66? the part # in the manual is C5TZ 8307-A. Any help will be greatly appreciated as it's going to cost a small fortune to have this thing shipped from Vancouver to California and I'd like to make double-sure it's going to be correct. (67 F100) As most of you know I recently restored it and had it up at the Supernats. Anyway while swmbo and I were on our way to visit her sister we stopped at a local postoffice to mail some letters and as I was getting ready to pull away a lady in a BIG Black VAN backed up into the passenger door. Needless to say that door must now be replaced. Also the chrome that took me 6 months to find NOS and was installed in June must now be replaced on that door. At least it didn't do anymore damage. After we got to my wife's sisters, I went out to move the truck and it would not start. The alternator belt had slipped and the alternator wasn't turning to charge the battery. Well I had to get a new belt but while rolling the truck out of the way to get it jumped off the rag joint on the steering column broke. 3 bad things on on day is just too much. Just thought I would share with everyone what happened. I am sure some of you have been in this position before. This was despite new thermostat, new water pump and flushing of the original small radiator. I ended up ordering a 4 row, high efficiency V8 size radiator from US Radiator. After waiting 5 + weeks and several phone calls, it finally arrived and was put in the truck last night. I drove the truck around in city traffic in the middle of the day today with the high having reached 104 today. This seems to have solved the problem. After the engine was fully warmed up, the temp gauge needle was either midrange or on the "C" side. Next summer will be the true test when I hope to get a new A/C system. The new radiator may help the engine run cooler but those vinyl seats still get awfully hot when it's 104 outside! Re: problem with vapor lock type symptoms: A few weeks ago I reported a problem with the engine losing power on acceleration. I received many good suggestions from the list and the problem appears to be solved. I changed both fuel filters, insulated the fuel line from pump to carburetor and switched to using one of the auxiliary gas tanks. My guess is that it was a fuel filter problem but it could be a problem with the main tank. I'll probably switch back to the main tank soon...wanted to rule out everything else first. Thanks again for all your great suggestions. Sounds like Hell to me to ;-) Seriously though, why would you want to. From what I have seen the TTB is an inferior setup for a 4X4. The old straight axle Dana 44, etc. are much easier to maintain, upgrade and swap/repair. Just look at the new Do*ges, what do they have? Beefy straight axles. With the advancements in the past five or so years in spring and lift tech you should be able to get a very good ride with significant axle articulation. Now if you two want to do something really trick, put a Dana 44 with the radius arms in the Back of the truck! That is a way cool setup I saw on an awesome rock crawling Bronco.
