No kidding ! !. Our yellow pages is not that large for radiator dealers and I think I only called 6 of them anyway !....can you say buy mine sucker ? ?...can you say retail only ? ? Sorting thru all of what I have learned from this lists experiences, service manuals, parts men, etc. here is what I want to get. A new,4-row, 2-5/8 thick core H x W to fit of course by 69 F350. Modine has a model 2304 like this. Supposedly is for 73-79 HD cooling 460FE towing pkg, etc, etc. Before I can consider it price-wise, I have to ask your opinions. The best wholesale discounted price I can find is * * * * * * * $ $ $ $ 2 8 0. 0 0 * * * * * * Can this be possible ? ? ? Mama Mia ! ! Is there a new radiator this size that is less than this ? I did replace the 30 year old coil with an Accel Super Stock, and a set of Accel Blue 8mm Sprial Core Wires. The Distrubutor is a Standard Blue Cap, with copper contacts. I'm running stock Motorcraft Plugs gapped at .035. My original distrubutor was loose, so installed one from a 74 360 that had a 2bbl, c6, but 3.00's. It's a stock rebuild, I don't have A/C, or do a lot of hill driving. Mainly Interstate Driving at 70. I am using a flexfan, and no thermostat. I don't have any oil/gas/tranny/rear end leaks, Dad would kill me, so that's out. I rebuilt the carberator last year. I've got about 1000 miles on the rebuild since the 1st of the month. Another problem I have is that the vaccum going to the tranny dosen't drop off completely when you rev it, so I don't have a forced downshift when I give it the gas. Prehaps a 4bbl would help? I have talked to a few of you in private, have never posted before. Got a question. I inherited my grandfathers old '68. (been sitting motorless for a few years now. I was last in line to get it.) Just put a new motor and tranny in it, and spent WAAY too much money on it. I noticed while putting the motor in that the front end is shot. Radius arm bushings are mostly gone, and got boo-koo slop in the kingpins. I haven't gathered the nerve to check out the I beam pivot points. ( as if I would know what I was looking at) So my question is, is this a job a shadetree mechanic with the average toolbox can do? Does the Haynes manual go into any detail on this? Is there any place online where I can download an exploded view of the front suspension? I have the suspension out of a late '70's E-350 that I killed for it's 460 crank a couple years ago. Would any of that swap out? I'm really not crazy about used bushings, but I built the motor with money I won't make for another 6 months. I've never done any frontend work other than the occassional tie-rod end and brakes, but I have a big hammer and I'm not afraid to use it. What are my options here? I bow to your infinite wisdom and experience. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 21:40:47 +0000 From: Don Grossman Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Dana 44 question Tony Marino wrote: > Humor an old man here- > > I have a '70 F-100 4x4 dana 44 open knuckle, drum brake Ford. > I have a '78 F-150 4x4 dana 44 open knuckle, disk brake Ford. > Both trucks completely stock. > > Either I'm blind or dumb, one has ball joints ('78) the other has "trunion" > bearings ('70)- (as Gary called it) I can't conceive how the spindles on > one will work on the other! Don, please don't think I'm offending you-- You > knowledge greatly surpasses me on old Fords, but I just don't see how?! Well Ok I did leave out one style but I thought it was only on the EB's. For a couple of years (not sure which) the open knuckle used a bearing with a cap kind of like a Dana 60 (Don't even get started, there are some differences between the 44 and 60 I was just using it for "kind of like") I was working off a yes or no answer for a 68 which should be closed knuckle if stock. But we all know how Ford was, if they were out of one part they just used what ever else is laying around. Back to business. To use the Ford Disk brake caliper brackets you must use the knuckle from a Ford axle (Dana 44) If you do not feel like changing the knuckles you can find a Ford hub and disk and then pick up a Shevy spindle, caliper bracket and caliper. Now assuming that the 70 Dana 44 with trunions uses six bolts to mount the spindle the Shevy conversion should work. On the earlier Dana 44 with closed knuckles the Shevy conversion should also work here. At one time I placed my Ford hubs on a Shevy axle, drums and all so I see no reason why the Shevy parts will not bolt on to a Ford axle. Get this I then took the old drums and backing plates from my Ford and put them on the front of a 52 M38A1. The six mounting bolts lined up perfectly on the Dana 25 knuckle. I had to open up the center of the drum to fit on the hub, but anyway it saved $200 or so bucks for the conversion. The carb was shot too so I pulled the old one off a 300 6 that is in the garage and tada instant running Jeep. Where was I at, oh yea the big problem with using Ford calipers and brackets is that you must also change the spindle and knuckle, so your axle must use ball joints. Ford disk parts use 5 bolts in a pattern so that they only go on one way. Look at some of the disk brake conversions for the EB's and most of what they use will work for 1/2 tons as well. Anyone going this far into a conversion should also consider replaceing the bolts with studs the mount from the inside of the knuckle. There is a picture in the Ford F-Series Pickup Owner's Bible by Moses Ludel the showes what will happen if the bolts pull out. War, heck no, I just didn't want to bring any other manufactures to the table. Joe, the answer to your question is no. You will need a new front axle. I had the open knuckles on my 69, but as Tony says, the pivot points for the steering knuckle are different. The earlier models have the "trunnion" setup (which I must have changed about 8 times because of a big heavy winch I used to have in front), and at least by 74, they had switched to the ball joint style (100% better design). By the way, the 74's were still running drum brakes. They may have changed in either 75 or 76. So, Joe, hunt around for the newer axle, and be sure to grab the track arm and the track arm frame bracket at the same time as these are different between the earlier and later models. Also, you'll need to update your tie rods to the 78-79 style, you pretty much don't want the 76-77 style. The pitman arm from a 78-79 rig will fit on to your older steering box, which will allow an easy conversion to the newer stuff. If you find a 78-79 rig (don't forget, all of the stuff from a 78-79 Bronco will work just as well), compare the tie rod setup to yours and you'll see how the drag link attaches below the pitman arm, rather than above, giving a better angle.....Your older tie rod will not fit into the newer steering knuckles as the tapers are a different size (the newer models are bigger)..... The swap is worth it! Now, once you get this done, let us know, and we'll get you set up with power steering..... Can't remember how many holes it has but I have a drum brake and disk brake version of the dana 44 and the 5 wheel lugs are the same of course but the spindle bolt circle is different and the parts do not interchange at all so you would have to replace the whole yoke assy from the ball joints out. They both have ball joints though which makes the axle housing interchangeable so I have a spare housing but not spare spindles or yokes (I do but I mean my third axle or second spare axle won't help me much) :-( 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! 9000#, in ground vehicle lift, Woooo Hooo! - -- Gary -- == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998 08:31:38 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Dana 44 question > Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 16:35:40 -0400 > From: Joe & Jen DeLaurentis > Subject: FTE 61-79 - Dana 44 question > WEll it seems like i started war and still have no answer ... > its a 68 4WD dana 44 I want to swap 76-79 Dana 44 disc brakes > onto my dana 44 drum brake rear????A yes or no answer will work to > this question...Also anybody have a dana 44 front end for sale? -- Has anyone picked up on the fact that he's asking about a dana 44 rear, not front? Does a dana 44 rear axle have full floating hubs? Hey Joe, I was just thinking.....I know that the steering knuckles and pivots are different between your year and the newer ones with the discs, but, upon a little reflection, I'm not absolutely positive that the AXLE is different! The reason I say this is that if your upper axle mount has a "threaded in" taper, and the bottom has just a taper only, you MAY be in luck....It would be worth your time to see if you can find the upper and lower ball joints (maybe just an entire steering knuckle) from a local yard off the newer model and see if it will fit into your axle housing. Theres a chance it will work.... You are exactly at the stage I was while trying to mount the F-250 HD spindles, etc.up to my F-150 front axle. Some people said it would work, and others said it wouldn't. So, I just bought a few of the parts from the yard, took mine apart, and tried it out myself....(it did work great, by the way)... So, it appears that the real answer to your question is: I don't know! The real reason I had changed my 69 front end to a newer model was that I had bent the housing while dropping off a dune at Pismo Beach....I swapped in a 74 at the time (roughly 15 years ago), but just recently swapped that one out for a 77. At the same time, I changed to the 3/4 ton spindles, etc.... So, Don, do you know for sure if the receiving pivot mounts on the housing are the same??? Disk brake/ Power steering conversion: I got the king pins and the "new" spindles in. Unfortunately, I broke the switch on the prop. valve trying to get the lines out....bummer. Back to the bone yard. I grabbed a booster from a 78 bronco and swapped the linkage. Grabbed a vacume port off a 78 fl50 6cylinder motor and screwed it right into my 352! The gear box will almost bolt in but I will need to notch or bend the motor mount some. Of course the fuel line has to be right there so I guess I'm going to have to drop it before I pick up the torch. By the way, The seat is at an upholster along with the visors and arm rests. I'm getting them all covered to match my truck for $400.00. By the way, Has anyone ever put up the white peg board headliner? Here is the scenario. It is 105 degrees F outside. I've been running the interstate at 70 mph with the air conditioner on (of course). The 160 degree t-stat shows the needle to be about on the "O" in "NORMAL" on the stock gauge. SWMBO decides she wants a cone at the next Mickey Dees. There are at least 12 other saps in front of me. As I sit in the line, that temp needle starts climbing and climbing until it gets right to the edge of the normal zone, never quite going into the hot zone. At this point in time, the air coming in my grille is probably about 140. After it passes the air conditioner condenser it's probably about 160. (I once had a Buick that had a temp sensor just inside the grille. I am not making these temps up.) Question: Would a 195 degree thermostat cause a lower temp gauge reading in the drive-through or woukd the truck overheat? (I know the answer, since >it's my truck and I have performed the experiment.) >-John The truck will still overheat with a 195... Once the temp is over 200, then either thermostat is fully open and out of the picture. Overheating at idle is nearly always a sign of inadequate air flow thru the radiator. Especially with air conditioning You need a good stout fan and a shroud that fits well. I'm sure everyone knows by now how much I like a good electric fan setup... It's been over 105 here the last few days and I can sit and idle indefinately and the temp stays in the "happy zone". You have a working coolant catch tank right? It helps keep the coolant degassed and little air bubbles from getting getting stuck on the surfaces of the block and radiator. Redline "water wetter" helps keep bubbles from forming, and also increases the heat transfer properties of the coolant. We've had the "glycol/water percentage" discussion, so I won't go there again, but it's cheap to try using less glycol and a bottle of water wetter so You might try it if You get bored. It doesn't make a big difference, but it does make a difference in the right direction... It made a noticable difference in mine on hot days before I went to the electric fans. If You've got a good fan shroud and the rad is clean, it sounds like a more serious cooling fan is gonna be required. If You've got a fan clutch, make sure it's working properly... There should be a pedal return spring as well as the spring in the booster to push it back up. Look under the dash where the brake pedal mounts and you should see a spring or where it was supposed to be at least. 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! 9000#, in ground vehicle lift, Woooo Hooo! - -- Gary -- == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998 11:54:41 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - cooling wars/white flag > Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998 08:33:15 -0500 > From: "John LaGrone" > Subject: FTE 61-79 - cooling wars/white flag > Question: Would a 195 degree thermostat cause a lower temp gauge > reading in the drive-through or woukd the truck overheat?
