Tips? Pointers? I've rebuilt several over the years, and they are very simple and straight forward. Just clean everything really good, replace the seals - gaskets and especially check the front bushing for wear. The front seal is usually the culprit of leakage. This will usually get it done. Remember - when you reinstall it, do not get the belt too tight. This is a power steering pump - - not an A/C compressor nor an alternator. Just so it is tight enough to prevent slippage, is all you need. Anyone with minimal skills can do this one. Keep it clean - can't express this too much. It won't ever tip over for sure and with rubber trailer tires is pretty easy to move around now. I think I'm on a roll here.......:-) I believe you've got it figured out!!! Mine do that to (4" lift), so do the stock ones I've seen around. I always wondered why that was....I've seen two types of stock lower plates, and one type is quite a bit thicker and beefier than the other. Other than being thicker, I think they are the same. If you have 78 parts, I imagine you have the heavier stuff.....especially now that you've added shims. Were you able to get the heads of the spring retainer bolts to square up when they were tightened? Also, regarding brake lines, are you still running one drop-down hose and splitting from the top of the diff, or did you split it out at the proportioning valve and use steel lines along the frame, then drop down in each fender well?. The 3/4 ton 4x4's I have seen all go with the latter setup, which is what I ended up doing. I made some brackets that go directly off the bottom of the frame between the spring tower and rear shock (assuming you have quad shocks) and made my connection there. I think it's going to work pretty good. Your Bronco proportioning valve probably has a spare inlet that is blocked off with a plug. Sounds like a great project, now I'm jealous with my little 44..... Someone made his own out of sheet metal and used dual fans, was that you? I think you said you had to push rather than pull also right? Way I see it the shroud is already there and out of the way so why not use it? Problem is I can't seem to find a 20" fan with the right specs to use. For the shroud to work well, the fan needs to be pretty close to the right size. Space between the grill and radiator is pretty tight so a shroud would be hard to set up I think. Your maintenance manual would probably call for P/S fluid. I'm not sure, but you can take this for what its worth to you. I've been doing these things for 40plus years. I use either of the ATF's (type F or Dextron) or the P/S fluid. I've never seen one fail for what was considered using the wrong fluid. I'd venture to guess that most P/S failures are due to excessive tightening of the belt and failure of the front bushing and seal as a result. I do not think P/S fluid will cause you any oroblems. I'll get blamed for all the truck list guys divorces.......What have I done.....:-) Tell you what though, seriously.......a guy can spend a lot more money and get toys he uses a lot less than that hoist will be used. Since I already had the barn and the 12' ceiling was just adequate for full usage of the hoist with most vehicles it just had to happen. $6000 for something that will last till I die doesn't sound all that bad when you think of it that way does it? (that includes the backhoe work, pea stone and hoist) Got to warn you though it goes in a 9' deep hole so people with water table problems beware. The gas station I looked at it in had so much water they wound up pumping and dredging untill it took a gravel train to back fill around it, kept caving in. Just a thought :-) I live on a hill and encountered no water at all and the walls stayed nice and straight with no cave ins so the gas station is probably what you call an exception but 9' is pretty deep and don't even think about digging it by hand due to potential of cave-ins, very dangerous. I put a piece of plywood on both sides of the hole while he dug it out with the back hoe to protect the edges of the hole and it was a very good forsight, worked out very well but the unit is made as a retrofit in concrete floors so the floor would do the same job in that case. Other than being > thicker, I think they are the same. Make it three I guess. The plates I got with the 79 front dana 44 I put in as my second axle had much closer spacing between the spring plate mounting bolts than my 78 radius arms. I had the thick one's, but they rusted out enough to allow the edge of plate to bend. Chalk one up for TTB as they mount right on top of traction beam and spring tapers down to real small dia spring wrap on lower end of spring. > get the heads of the spring retainer bolts to square up when they were > tightened? I had 2-3/4 drop downs and 4" lift, so it was close. Then I went to 6" lift and now have them bowing slightly towards the front. This does not bother me nearly as much as the 1 inch bowing out to the side that I had. I imagine I could put a small spacer on front mount bolt (under pad) and even it back out. > > Also, regarding brake lines, are you still running one drop-down hose and > splitting from the top of the diff, Yes, in fact I left it there all hooked up when I pulled axle. Just have to hook up banjo's to calipers and figure out some way to hold long run on passenger 60 axle tube and I'm done with that. > The 3/4 ton 4x4's I have seen all go with the latter setup, > which is what I ended up doing. The centrifugalweights are free, and has a very smooth consistant power curve (no apparent spikes or flat spots) It runs great, but only with all of that timing. I've considered switching to manifold vacuam for the advance. I've always run venturi, because my 390's of the past were 9.5 to 1 or better and rattled like a maraca on manifold vacuam and went flat at light load. That's why I use venturi. I agree that this is too much exhaust duration for my application. A funny thing was discovered about FE's in general a while back. They don't need as much exhaust duration as was once thought. The port flows a lot better than it really should from looking at it. Keep in mind that the exhaust port dimension is very little different from 352 all the way up to the Tunnel-Port. That's a pretty good port in my book. I don't think that a split pattern is any good on this engine. My opinion, of course. I put 2 in pipes turning out behind the rear wheels with OEM style Walker truck mufflers and actually picked up considerably over glass packs and rear axle dumps, so I think it was a little too free on the exhaust side. I'd like to have a 268 degree and .520 lift cam in mine . I think it would really belch it out. Yeah, I cut some flat pieces of aluminum to fill the corner areas outside the fans and the 2 spaces between the fans. They were quite simple to make. To tell the truth tho, I took the shroud pieces off shortly after installation so I could do some stuff and I've never put them back on. Also would this be too much work to put into my 72' F-100 ? Uhhh, '93..? Refresh my memory, is this a 5.0 liter or that 4.6 turkey? Why does it need rings and the fixins at only 30K miles? That seems a little odd... Now I'm looking to do a little cosmetic touch-up on it and I need some of that flourescent orange paint that Ford used on the needles of most gauges. Does anyone know where to get any touch-up paint that matches closely? I did once. It was right after I brought my little mule home. All I can say is DON"T DO IT :) I lost my water outlet and water pump right off the bat. It thinned down the freeze plugs but they lasted a few more years. It got rid of all the corrosion all right, unfortunately most of that corrosion was my cooling system. :) I think if you use it form the start there'd be no problem but first time on a 25 year old engine was a bad thing, a very bad thing! :) Later!
