First of all I wanted to thank everyone (Deacon, Gary, John LaGrone) that gave me advise on switching out my distributor. I finally had a chance to switch out the distributor on my 292. I put in a NAPA rebuilt distributor and a Petronix Electronic Conversion Kit. I have not seen to much of a difference in the low end, but at the high end (basically above 2000 rpms) the engine runs much smoother and has a little more power. I have one concern...for those that don't remember I have a 1963 F100...as I said earlier it runs great and smoothly at higher rpms, but it runs a little rough at idle. It has been like that since I rebuilt the engine and when I had the mechanical points system. It runs a little rough, not to bad, but enough to were is bugs when I am at a stop light. Do these old engines run a light rough at idle? I guess I am comparing mine to the smoothness of a newer engine with hydraulic lifters. Tell me, o ye that have Reverse is usually the last to go when fluid levels get low or other switching problems come up so it it doesn't work it may be a bad sign :-( Fluid level will affect rev or third and the modulator will affect third but has no effect on rev AFAIK so if topping it off doesn't fix it I'd say you have internal problems. To be sure make sure the vac line to the modulator is hooked up correctly and the tranny is showing full on the stick in park at idle. You will have to wait several minutes for the oil level to subside in the tube before checking if you add very much at a time so be patient. If you need to open it up it can be done with some good referance manuals with pictures. Autos are actually pretty simple but they are EXTREMEMLY sensitive to dirt so you have to have a VERY clean place to work on them and keep all parts VERY CLEAN in the process. 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! - -- Gary -- = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 11:49:00 -0400 From: Ken Payne Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - PO'd At 06:49 AM 6/3/98 PDT, you wrote: > > >>Ken, >I have another solution for your problem. I agree You want the highest CFM possible. The problem is that the CFM ratings are rated at Free Air or at some unknown pressure drop so the CFM ratings between manufacturers may be comparing apples to oranges. 2 different fans with the same Free Air CFM rating may move considerably different amounts of air with a pressure drop of 0.5" water column. It doesn't take much air restriction to drop the CFM rating a bunch. For example, I have specs for a small industrial blade type fan here: Free air rating: 820 CFM At static pressure drop of 0.1" H2O: 769 CFM "" 0.2" H2O: 720 CFM "" 0.3" H2O: 668 CFM "" 0.4" H20: 602 CFM "" 0.5" H2O: 532 CFM "" 0.6" H20: 360 CFM "" 0.7" H2O: 245 CFM "" 0.8" H2O: 140 CFM Another fan In the catalog only moves 725 CFM at free air, but moves 548 CFM at 0.5" H20, so even tho the free air rating is lower it moves more air than the other one under "real world" conditions. The setup on my '71 operates at a pressure drop of about 0.4" H2O, so You can see what that would do to the CFM rating of the fans in the example... The CFM ratings can give You a rough guide, but take them with a grain of salt unless they give the rating at a reasonable pressure drop. As far as the current rating goes, I kinda figure go with the ones with higher current ratings. Hopefully the higher current means a more powerful motor which helps keep the airflow curve flatter at higher pressure drops. With small motors, the fan slows down a lot as You increase the pressure drop across the fan blades. Of course a higher current draw could also just meen the motor is less efficient, but I would expect most of the cheap per-mag motors in these fans to be in roughly the same boat efficiency-wise. Who knows... >instructions on how to wire thermostat are included in thermostat kit. >using fan in conjuction with your regular fan might be a good idea, although >from what i've read the electric fans are most efficient as pullers not >pushers. Most fans will "push" more air thru a given restriction than they can "pull" thru. Pushers are usually slightly more efficient. The other advantage of "pushers" is that the fans don't get the hot air from the rad blowing across them so they may live longer. There wasn't room to mount mine as pushers, only as pullers. >you might want to get a hold of a high performance catalog, jegs, summit etc, >they usually carry many different brands of fans. Tons of fans to choose from out there! I looked at a bunch of fans and their ratings and finally threw my hands up and went on gut feeling and what was readily available. I feel *real* good about what I ended up with, but it was kind of a crap shoot... I had an 82 D**ge D-50. Dad bought it new and it was my first vehicle. The deal was it was the farm truck till I went to college then it was mine. By the time I went to college it was 4 years old and had 80K miles. On the way home one weekend the clutch started slipping. I told dad when I got home and he insisted we change the clutch immediately. We bought a new plate, bearing and pressure plate and took it to his mechanic. Dad didn't spring to have the flywheel resurfaced. After I got the truck back the clutch didn't slip but it would chatter when pulling away from a stop. I lived with it for a while then a guy in my class who was a mechanic in a previous life suggested I resurface the flywheel in the truck. NO I mean IN the truck. I tried his suggestion. I set the parking brake, put the truck in gear, revved the engine and slowly let the clutch out. When it started to engage I increased the engine speed as I continued to let it out. Just before it stalled I clutched it again. I repeated this procedure once more and never had it chatter again. I drove it for another 40K miles and then traded it back to dad for his 87 Ford Ranger. You don't want to go too far with this or you could burn the flywheel or burn up the clutch. It seemed to break the glazing on the flywheel or maybe it mated the disk to the flywheel. Either way the chatter went away. Only the EEC will be the size of a postage stamp and I will carry spares.. :) > Air's nice to have > when you are driving somewhere but not so nice to have when > you work > on your own stuff, well never too late to learn to fix A/C, it's easy :) > I keep one for the family that I > don't work on and one for me that I do which just happens > to be old > and beat up and reliable as a stone, like me :-) hmmmmm ..... well....naaaaaaaaaa :) John Miller, FoMoCoNUT 96 F-350 Reg Cab XLT, 4x4, 460 w/ A4OD, My Baby "Baloo" 75 F-100 Reg Cab Ranger, 2wd, 360, C6, Daily Driver "Lucy" and "always" looking ! ! ! = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 13:11:02 -0700 From: sdelanty Subject: Re: FTE 61-79 - Re: cooling fans >Steve, did you run across any 19 - 20" fans in the process? The >original poster mentioned one, what brand was it? I would like to >try a single puller fan inside my shroud to replace the mechanical >fan but I want it to fill the shroud? Yeah, Kragens had them in 12", 14", and 20". I wasn't too impressed with the 20" tho, as the 3 fans were rated at 2200, 2400, and 2600CFM. I figured the 12 and 14 together (4600CFM) was a better deal than a single 20" at 2600CFM. All 3 fans appeared to use the exact same motor and current draw for the 20" was only slightly higher than the 14", so I expect the 20" turns a lot slower... They were real polite and never questioned my decision to return it. Gave me a credit, their policy is "no refunds, just credit". I was aware of that policy and I can live with it. It turns out that the "flunky" can't speak english well and didn't really understand me. He really was trying to help, so he's not a flunky. The window on the 72 cracked when he was trying to take it out (the rubber is very old and hard). He didn't know it was for a restoration and simply picked the next best window because he knew I was on my way over. He didn't understand what I was saying when I asked him if it was the correct window, he understood "Ford", "truck" and "window" and answered my question with "yes, its right". I walked into the yard prior to talking to them and I saw where the window cracked so I know they were telling the truth. My faith in humanity is restored and I won't need to call in the Marines. I'll probably spend the $75 there this weekend anyways so no loss.
