However, if you want to test the fuel gauge, you can do so wth an ohm meter. Position the float into the full position and you should measure very little resistance (close to 0 ohms) then put the float in the empty position and you should measure very high resistance. I dont think it goes to an open circuit, but 100 ohms seems to come to mind. I would think you could measure the other senders the same way, but I have never done so. I replaced the kingpins on both sides but still have 1/8" vertical play even though i used all the load washers which were provided. Were there different axles used on these trucks, or do i just have a suspension built on a friday. I would greatly appreciate a list of the proper sizes due to my having to reengineer other mistakes the previous owner made. ______________________________________________________ = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 00:19:29 -0400 From: Ken Payne Subject: FTE 61-79 - Reverse Rotation Dana 44 Forwared for: "Michael R. Ken Try working with the flunky first. Then get a-hold of the owner, explain the situation, give him/her the opportunity to blame the flunky, bosses hate to be blamed. If that don't work... walk out... but before doing so inform the low-life that your going to tell your family about their excellent establishment. Then you simply let us (The Family) know the phone number of such a fine business... so that we can call and ask if they have any more 427OHC's, or Boss 429's, or windshields for a 72... Just finished replacing both front rotors on my '74 because I didn't notice the rivets were nibbling on them, and my son comes over and says the pickup ('67 390 with C-6) doesn't go in 3rd or reverse any more. Anyway, I put 2 quarts in and it drove a little better but still no third gear or reverse. Tell me, o ye that have been there, how bad off am I? Can this thing be patched up in any way in the truck, or am I looking at a trip to the trans. shop and major surgery to my wallet? I have tore down most every part of a truck but never automatic transmissions. I think the mfg is Haynes ? ?...not sure. are there any better mfr's than any others ? Mine are just singles. A 12" and a 14" side by side. I got 'em at... Heehee... Kragens. I'm sure that some brands might be better than others, but I don't know which. One thing I did learn is that large fans don't necessarily move much more air than small ones. The brand I got was available in 12", 14", and 20" sizes and moved (I recall) about 2200, 2400, and 2600CFM. So the 12 and 14 together are much more potent than a single 20". All 3 use the same motor and the larger blades just turn slower... > how did you configure the thermostatic control ? What type of sending unit did >you have to use and where did you mount it? I used an adjustable thermo from Kragens. The probe just slips btween the rad water neck and the hose, a setup I don't like much, but it hasn't leaked yet so I guess I won't sweat it for awhile. Some day I'll solder a therm well into the top of the rad for the probe... >Also, is it OK to run it direct off the battery using a relay through the sending unit? Yeah, mine comes off the battery, thru a 20 amp fuse then to the relay and fans. > You know....I have just got to tell you how much I enjoy driving at nite again >after doin the "relay thing" with the lites. ...love those relays! Yep, makes a big difference, don't it! (-: > You might be interested in knowing that certain GM C-bodys have at least two beautiful, big, black, plug-in type Bosch-type relays, (with number codes printed on them), wired with 12g and 14g wires to beautiful, big, black sockets right up high in the left side of the engine compartment just ripe for the picking to use for future conversions. Various OEM's have used them for over 3 decades now. Fuel pump relay for '67 VW squarebacks with EFI is the earliest I know of... I found some sockets for them also at a Pep-boys in sacramento a couple weeks ago. If You goto my website and follow the "F100" link, You can see a grainy photo of my fan mounting. Often our customers would want to pinch their pennies and use the cheapest parts on the market. When it comes to clutches that is rebuilt. OEM type Clutch disks (IMNSHO) can not be rebuilt! Period. The Pressure plate can IF the shop doing the work is knowledgeable but the price will then be almost what a new one it... so why take the chance? But the disk? No way! If you look at the edge of virtually any OEM type disk, in between the friction material or facings you can see the metal of the disk. This metal is not just a flat round disk. There is a feature is called Marcel (which I may have just butchered the spelling on); Marcel is a spring. Marcel when viewed on the edge of the disk is shaped like a wave or an "S". It is formed when they stamp out the disk, and then the disk is heat treated. The way that it works is: As the P/Plate is applied this Marcel spring cushions the shock load and allows the engagement to happen smoothly. As a clutch disk is used it is subject to a bunch of heat. This heat in the end anneals the metal of the disk and allows the Marcel to flatten out. When the Marcel is flattened out it will not cushion the application of the clutch and it will vibrate or chatter as it is engaged, particularly in first gear. The Marcel can not be economically be re-set, so, it isn't on a rebuilt clutch. Another thing that happens on an OEM type clutch is that the springs in the hub fail, again due to heat. This reduction in spring rate will cause chatter. A weak spring will also break. Having parts of spring shrapnel flying around in the clutch assembly is not a good thing. If you are getting chatter in first gear & or sometimes second, but you can side step the clutch and not have it, and you have a ReMan clutch disk (or a really cheap one), and everything else is in good condition, IME 99 times out of 100 its the disk! I get more satisfaction out of my '65 than I'd ever get out of a new one.(if I could afford it) As an aside, SWMBO has argued that I should buy a new one,(at $22,500) but she gives me hell when I talk about buying door gaskets and an anti-rattle kit for my '65, go figure. I don't know why, I guess it's just my Scottish genetics coming through. I would much rather spend $22,500 on a lot of other things than daily transportation. (like restoring an old Mustang and my '65 and have enough left to fill up and go somewhere? Build and equip a shop, maybe?) The dealers and banks have the money tied up to where you have to buy new stuff, which in the same vein, though in another aspect, as your comments is just more manipulation of the public. It really p*sses me off sometimes. I have a '95 Contour that I've spent more on keeping going than I spent on my truck's ressurection. $400 for a German made cooling fan, $110 for a U.K. made rotor. I need to replace the clutch in the near future, $275 dollars for parts and 12 hrs(that's right, 12 hrs) of labor. Yeah, buddy. Now the driver's side seat track has a broken spring that releases it to move. Do you think they'd sell me a spring? No, I need a whole seat track assembly at $250 plus shipping from Germany. "World Car" indeed! THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A FORD!!!! At 82,000 miles it's worth about $6000. My payoff right now is $11,000. Need I say more? I wouldn't mention that at first (and I would definately check with your local chamber of commerce first) but you may need to bring that up if they aren't straight with you. Like others have posted to the list I would start off politely, assuming it was an honest mistake and then see what happens. You might want to tell them that you run a mailing list of, literally, thousands of 61-79 Ford Truck owners and that pissing you off would likely lost them quite a few sales.
