I ran bias on the front and radials on the rear for years with no
problems. The tire shops I spoke with at that time advised not to run
radials on the front and bias on the rear because of tracking
problems. Mike.

It's not a hex type socket. It has 4 square indentations that mesh with
protrusions on "socket type" tool. They make one that works on dana 44
and dana 60 front ends. You prob have dana 44, but may have dana 60 (If
pumpkin is the same size as one in back, you have optional dana 60
front). Get the tool that works on both and your set.

I don't thinks so! If he is looking for a 4 door his would be looking for
a crew cab. A Super Cab is a 2 door truck and a Custom is a trim level
designation.

Does anyone out there have the technical schematics for this truck? I have
the shop manual but I need more detailed information such as bolt sizes and
visual perspective for reassembly. When I got the truck the previous owner
had completly broken it down to diagnose the motor. What I was left with
was cardboard boxes of scattered parts in the bed of the truck. I have had
the 223 moter rebuilt and have reconditioned most of the other components.
My problem is that I did not see the parts in their original places and I
think I am missing several bolts and maybe even a few brackets. Can anyone
help "Cinderella" dance again?

I have a 1965 F 100 with the original 240 in-line 6, original radiator
and 3 speed manual transmission. I've not had this truck very long and so
don't really have a baseline established. Is it normal for this engine
> to run hot? The temperature gauge on the instrument panel with normal
driving goes clear over to the mark just before the "H". The gauge has
been checked and appears to be accurate. When the radiator water is 180
degrees, the temp gauge registers half way in between cold and hot. As
part of the troubleshooting that has already been done, the thermostat
has been replaced, radiator flushed & inspected for blockage/restriction
and water pump replaced. This truck has an aftermarket A/C on it that I
would like to get working but with the truck already running on the hot
side, I'm afraid it wouldn't tolerate that additional burden. I do plan
to get a radiator shroud. Apparently, radiator shrouds were not part of
the original equipment. The outside air temps have been around 70-80s
but soon they will be running over 100. If running this hot is not
normal, I'm looking for suggestions on what else can be done.
Thanks, Roberta in Tucson, Arizona with rust free 1965 F100 custom cab

Yeah, I just did it recently! You look up "Redi Strip" under ' metal
> cleaning' in your local yellow pages.

They will chemically strip and de-rust the frame. They will also dip the
frame in their zinc phosphate tank for an extra charge.

Then you have two ways to go: powder coating (good but expensive, and

doesn't always get the nooks and crannies) or painting with epoxy primer
and then a really good industrial coating like Endura. If you use a wand
gun you can paint the boxed portions of the frame too.

No, he is not. Shane, what you want is called a Crew Cab. A Super Cab
only has 2 doors and then a "half" section behind the front seats.
Sometimes those are also called Extended Cab, although that is really a
Chevy term. What you want with 4 doors has always been called a CREW CAB
for as long as I can remember. Also, you might look for "SRW" which means
Single Rear Wheels, but most folks probably wouldn't know to put that in
their add. Good luck, those are somewhat hard to find in the older years.

Subject: FTE 61-79 - 351M questions

Hi, I'm joining this list for the summer since I'm in school.
I bought a 1979 F150 custom in January. This truck originally
came from the factory with a 302 and 3 speed manual. The
truck had already been converted to automatic when I bought
it using factory parts (tilt column w/shifter). However the 302
shook badly and one day when I was trying to start it the carb
lit up. I exchanged the engine and transmission with a 1978
351M and C6. The extra weight has highlighted the downfall
of the I-beam front suspension (front wheels lean inwards)
Can this be remedied by swapping out the front coils with the
ones from the donor truck or do I need to get heavier shocks?
Also, how do I tell if my torque converter is locking up properly
or not? Sometimes even after driving for a while my choke
seems to remain closed - I put it in neutral and it holds high
revs. Any ideas as to what this could be? BTW the heat riser
from the crossover is broken.
My plan is to rebuild the five-oh after a year or so and put it
back in with an OD transmission (or maybe 5 sp) if $$ allows.
Thanks for your help.

Chad

Just to help whip this topic into submission I will dig into my "been there,
done that, and sure was sorry" file to add a bit.

Radial sidewalls flex more, bias sidewalls are really stiff. When you
corner on radials you "drift" just a bit more than when on bias, but the
traction is much better and the ride is great so as long as the front and
rear drift about the same you go around in fine style. If the rear drifts
more because you have bias on front and radials in the rear, you start into
the corner and usually realise you have oversteered a bit because the
radials let the rear end swing out a tad and so turn the truck farther than
you had planned. Going down the road this happens for every little course
correction, the radials always make the truck turn more than you wanted so
you correct back, it overcorrects, soon you are whipping the
wheel back and
forth all down the road. Add load and it gets worse. For a thorough
education on the matter, load the truck to max and you will learn all there
is to know about radial flex, oversteer, unstable handling and ambulances.

I had the combination on my work truck and with a full load was fine up to
40 or so, above that it was more than scary. I run bias all the way around
now as I cannot find radials in the load range I need. Its a '74 F-250 with
6000 lb light weight, might be loaded with as much as 4000 lbs and pulls a 2
ton chipper. I run 12-16.5 8 ply on the back and get along OK. This rig
badly needs duals, but then I badly need a new rig so we come out even.

Greetings to all -- I've been on the list for over 6 months and had kind
of thought I wouldn't post anything until I had an answer to someone's
query, but everyone seems to know a lot more than me .. so, I guess I
have to introduce myself with a problem instead of a solution. I've got
a '70 F100 (2WD)with a remanufactured 300 CID. It's my daily driver and
reliable as taxes but : the clutch has always chattered in first gear.
I've replaced the clutch kit twice in 2 years, also refaced and balanced
the flywheel, but the chatter always returns after temporary
improvements.
It's as if the clutchplate is either not making good contact on the
flywheel, or it's not flush to it. I don't know much about clutches
(except they're supposed to be fairly problem free!): what's the deal
here? Thanks in advance, and love the list!

In AZ, Yes you truck will run hot. I live in Mesa AZ and have a 66 F-100
with the 240 and a four speed. So far I have replaced my stock radiator
with a 3 core unit, added a home made fan shroud, neither of which had
helped. When the temperature gets over 100, and I am sitting in traffic,
my temperature gauge will register 220-230 degrees. If and when I hit all
of the stop lights when they are green, or am on the freeway, the
temperature hovers around the 200 degree mark or above. I have a small
thermometer in the cab and it is not unusual for the temperature in the cab
to hit 140 degrees in the summer time here. The other thing that I want to....
