You can adjust the spring pressure to make it take more to pull it open, but when you get it to where it doesn't spit when you slam it down, it will be flat. What the vacuam break does is crack the air valve on acceleratiom and effectively both give it a little fuel to keep it from bogging and slow down the sudden opening of the valve keeping it from dumping fuel.(spitting) I plan to put one on next time it comes apart, but until then I'll have to time my foot to the load conditions. > Can you adjust the accelerator pump to actuate less? "Turbochargers" by Hugh Macinnes, and "Street Supercharging" by Pat Ganahl would be a good start. They should both be available at Your local speed shop. I'd like to use a pair of turbos from T-bird turbo coupes or equivalant on the FE390. I found one at the wreckers for $45, now I'm waiting for a second one to show up... I maintain two of them at where I work, and dont recall seeing any. They do sound very cool at 2500rpm, even cooler at 2750... I think it would be possible to install the turbo, but plumbing in the 3" exhaust from the turbo and out of the engine bay might be a bit problematic. I can check the manuals this afternoon, and have a "factual" answer to my claim of no wastegates...... OH hey I just thought of something =I There is am all Ford show at the old San Jose plant now shopping mall every year. I just happend to be in Pleaston at that time so I jumped on down to check it out, big Mustang turn out. It was in late Sept so that might give some people time to make plans. Steve, or anyone on Fordnatics right now, someone there might have some information on it. There is no accelerator pump discharge into the secondaries on a Quadrajet... I hate to admit it but, well ok, yes I used to make allot, and I mean allot, of money working on nothing but these darn things. your tuning is limited to secondary air valve tension and size and spring rate of the secondary metering rods, as for the primary you have metering rod size and tension. Accelerator pump discharge can be played with a little with moving the fulcrum point of the pump lever, and length of the pump arm. I hate to admit it but a "properly tuned in Quadrajet is a nice piece. However you well never see any one of those Rochester NY things on any Ford I ever own/drive. Vogt There is a book that you should have it is called "Turbochargers" One of the best volumes ever written on the subject. You should check out this site: http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.alliedsignal.com/business/turbo/about_cas.html This is one of the best sites on the web. Garrett builds the Turbos for the race boat that I am peripherally involved with Another site is: http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.turbocity.com/ There are some general guidelines to be aware of: You should aim for 9.0 - 9.5:1 Static CR. as this will give you good response when you are not making boost. You need to have the Camshaft custom ground. IMHO most of the so called "Turbo" cams are way too conservative as cam grinders tend to be conservative. You should be running a Roller Cam as it will let you crank the valves open farther at a shorter duration. Think seriously about aluminum heads. They will increase the engine's tolerance for going into detonation. You need pistons made by "JE" Have them specked by you engine builder, JE are (is) good people to work with. You need to know what the effective compression ratio is for any given boost. If you are running pump gas you are not going to be able to run high boost as you will melt the thing down. find a source of Ave. or Race Gas for Friday night !-) You need a GOOD water pump, and radiator, and do not underdrive the pump. You need a high volume oil pump, Big oil cooler(s). and an Accu-sump would be a good idea. Forget all of the trick high RPM modifications as you will not need to go above 4500-5500RPM. You need a solid bottom-end, run ARP Rod Bolts and Main Studs, a 4 bolt main would be a good idea as you should be able to easily get 7-800HP. You need to control the oil so a good pan and windage tray are mandatory, as is a synthetic oil. You don't need to "port and polish" the heads, but you do need smooth....
