I have not taken the transfer case apart yet, but does anybody have an idea what could be wrong? It was making a "clunk clunk" noise under heavy 4wheeling. I am thinking about finding some doors from the salvage yard and attempt to make some half doors for the summer. How about a removable top with a flange welded on, only visable from the inside. I've >seen the Mr Gasket spreadbore adapter and thought a junkyard Q-jet might >be cheap to try and see if I like the setup. It's an FE, most likely a 390 judging from the power it makes. It's set up really loose(judging from the excessive blow-by) with forged pistons(judging from the cold noise it makes and the reinforcement in the underside of the pistons I saw when I had the pan down)It has an Edelbrock Performer with a Q-jet, which I think is the ultimate street carb bar none, on a Mr Gasket adapter which has been called into question by a fellow list member (please tell me more about why it's detrimental, I really want more info) I have an aftermarket cam of unknown specs, but it does lope a little. From my experience if you stay out of it about 12 or 13 mpg is what I get, but, the throttle responsiveness will tempt you too much. I did 9 mpg last week because I hogged it at about every chance I got in the open. One caveat, all Q-jets will vary from one you'll encounter to another. I have an '81 GMC 305 carb. It has an electric choke(a must have for Ford use, I can't help you on kickdown as I've only ran this carb on a '68 Mustang 289 4-speed and this truck)and for some reason has a larger float bowl volume than many I've seen. If you are concerned about the displacement/application ratio, my brother-in-law, the best Q-jet builder on earth, put the same application carb on a 454 Ch*vy for a customer to rave reviews. I can't say enough good about this carb, I've run it for about seven years on two widely different engines with great results. You will want both a primary chocke pull-off and a secondary vacuam pull-off unless you mind feathering the secondary engagement a little. Q-jets without a seconary vacuam break will bog or spit if suddenly stabbed depending on the air-valve setting. I plan to add one when we put another kit in it. The secondary air-valve will adjust to pretty close but the vacuam break will make it a no brainer engagemant. The primary throttle response is unbelievable and is without a doubt the most calibrate mixture I've ever seen.
