Gary: I didn't ask him that question as I didn't really care. If I have
to buy a quadrajet, that would be a plus. If it's the square bore then I
have my autolite.

Can't lose!!

Yo Dean (or Liz?):

I think your '78 Bronco was originally equipped w/ a catalytic converter.
Why? In 1975, unleaded fuel and catalytic converters became mandatory for
all vehicles w/ GVW less than 5500 lbs. Ford introduced the F150
specifically to increase the 1/2-ton payload to avoid installing a cat.
Not knowing for sure, but I doubt your Bronco has a GVW as high as an F150.
OTOH, maybe a towing package (factory option?) was available to bump the
GVW up and avoid the cat.

>The engine has a sticker that states:
>NON CATAYST
>This engine conforms to US enviornmental protection
>agency regulations applicable to 1978 model year
>engines Fueled Heavy Duty Engines
>D8TE-9CA485-ACA

I'd be willing to bet that the engine (or the valve cover where the sticker
is located) is a transplant. Reasons cited above. The sticker you refer
to is the emissions certification. It should also state what other
emissions equipment (if any) was installed on that engine (for example,
EGR, EVAP, Thermactor, etc.)

>The bottom pully has no room for a Smog pump. I beleive
>there never was one. The engine is a 351M, this is the
>original motor.

All M-block engines (351M/400) equipped w/ a Thermactor air pump in trucks
and Broncos had the air pump mounted in front of the right cylinder head.
A bracket attaches to the right side of the water pump to support the air
pump. The air pump is driven by a belt from the alternator. Does your
alternator have a double groove pulley on it? If so, the outside groove
(toward the front of the vehicle) is for the air pump drive belt.

At some point (not sure when exactly), even non-catalyst M-block engines
started using Thermactor air pumps. The main purpose of the air pump is to
inject oxygen into the exhaust gas stream for the catalyst (although it
does provide some minor non-catalyst HC reduction benefits), but using them
on non-catalyst engines was probably just a convenience to simplify
assembly line production.

As far as registering your vehicle in CA goes, according to the CA smog
> check
web site (URL below), you need only have properly functioning
emissions control equipment in the configuration that your vehicle was
originally equipped. You will, of course, have to pay the one-time $300
Smog Impact Fee when you first register the vehicle in CA, if the vehicle
was not originally configured to meet CA emissions standards.

Check out the official web site: http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/smoghome.htm

Good luck w/ your Bronco.

Find a divorced 205, which are not that hard to find, and use it. You can
even get one out of a D*dge W300 if I am not mistaken, up to mid 80's vintage.

When you find it, check to see the front output shaft is on the driver's
side/lower, and the input/rear output shaft is on the passenger side/upper.
GM setup is different, of course. Stay away from anything GM if you know
what's good for you.

Then pop the front shaft back cover, and the inspection plate off and check
the condition of the gears.

You can buy a rebuild kit from the jobber (Federal Mogul bearings &
national seals).
There is no good information on how to rebuild these things. There is a
trick to getting the shift rails in right, and I am telling you the system
the book recommends to remove the roll pins in the shift forks is stupid!
I have a better way.

Here's what you do: if you decide to buy a 205 (completely bulletproof
setup) which is in decent shape, and want to rebuild it, email me privately
and I will guide you thru it.

Ken,
As you saw I put a carter 600cfm carb on my 352. I had thought of going
with something bigger but it seems to work just fine. I noticed while
we were at Pigeon Forge alot of truck had the carter 4bbl.

I like the carb and it was a pretty good price.

I too am looking for a spare tire holder. Stoney if Stu doesn't want it
and it doesn't fit Shannons truck then send it my way. I need for my
67.

Stu what do you need a spare tire holder for now. Your truck is fixin
to be in a whole bunch of pieces.....I don't reckon you will be needin
it until the truck is back on the road...

If anyone happens to have a spare tire holder lying around and you
really need to get rid of it, then send it my way... I looked all over
Pigeon Forge for one could not find one. I also have been scouring the
junk yards but so far have had no luck. Does anyone know if 73 to 79
and new will fit 67 to 72???

The AM/FM/CB was a factory option. (at least the Ford wiring diagram

diagrams, anyone know what their worth? I don't have the 79 anymore, but
have a 68 F100 Ranger that need a 3.5 9 inch gearset, Trade? Partial?

Ken,
If you decided to go with a carb that requires a kick down, give me a
call and we will get together on a Saturday. You can see how we rigged
up mine to make it work. The actual setup was simple in the end but
took a little work to get there.

My '74 W200 ClubCab has a divorce-mounted NP-205 as well. They were standard issue on Dodge 1-tons up thru 91 or 92 I think, but most all of the later ones were integrated with the tranny.

Would you consider writing this up and maybe posting it on the site? There are a TON of 205's out there in the field, and other than paying the local Dana/Spicer depot to do the job, I'm at a loss. It's such a simple box I think a DIY rebuild is probably do-able for many of us.

Just bought a '71 F-100 with a 352, 2barrell carb, a/c.
The truck runs ok, but i'd like to improve low-end a little without
hurting mileage. can you suggest an intake manifold to replace the
cast-iron one? does Edelbrock make one?
Also, what do you recommend in the way of headers to replace the stock
exhaust?

thanks,
ish

Best bet for most truck applications is a set of Tri-Y headers (Stan's, Thorley, ??)

Sorry guys but the front output on the Dodge up until 94 is on the passenger
side.
