Why? In 1975, unleaded fuel and catalytic converters became mandatory for all vehicles w/ GVW less than 5500 lbs. Ford introduced the F150 specifically to increase the 1/2-ton payload to avoid installing a cat. Not knowing for sure, but I doubt your Bronco has a GVW as high as an F150. OTOH, maybe a towing package (factory option?) was available to bump the GVW up and avoid the cat. >The engine has a sticker that states: >NON CATAYST >This engine conforms to US enviornmental protection >agency regulations applicable to 1978 model year >engines Fueled Heavy Duty Engines >D8TE-9CA485-ACA I'd be willing to bet that the engine (or the valve cover where the sticker is located) is a transplant. Reasons cited above. The sticker you refer to is the emissions certification. It should also state what other emissions equipment (if any) was installed on that engine (for example, EGR, EVAP, Thermactor, etc.) >The bottom pully has no room for a Smog pump. I beleive >there never was one. The engine is a 351M, this is the >original motor. All M-block engines (351M/400) equipped w/ a Thermactor air pump in trucks and Broncos had the air pump mounted in front of the right cylinder head. A bracket attaches to the right side of the water pump to support the air pump. The air pump is driven by a belt from the alternator. Does your alternator have a double groove pulley on it? If so, the outside groove (toward the front of the vehicle) is for the air pump drive belt. At some point (not sure when exactly), even non-catalyst M-block engines started using Thermactor air pumps. The main purpose of the air pump is to inject oxygen into the exhaust gas stream for the catalyst (although it does provide some minor non-catalyst HC reduction benefits), but using them on non-catalyst engines was probably just a convenience to simplify assembly line production. As far as registering your vehicle in CA goes, according to the CA smog check web site (URL below), you need only have properly functioning emissions control equipment in the configuration that your vehicle was originally equipped. You will, of course, have to pay the one-time $300 Smog Impact Fee when you first register the vehicle in CA, if the vehicle was not originally configured to meet CA emissions standards. Check out the official web site: http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/smoghome.htm Good luck w/ your Bronco. Dave R. In fact, I'd like to take my intake off (FE 360) and put it on right using RTV so I don't have an oil slick down the front of my motor . . But, at 135k miles, I'd probably end up doing valves, then while I'm at it, I'm gonna do etc .. etc ... There are some places, however, that I just don't recommend using it, Auto trans pans being one. Like you said, the key is to not use to much, if I had a pan that I was having problems with, then I would give it a shot. I've just never had trouble with a clean, flat pan not sealing with the normal gasket. I have found RTV bits in engines, transmission screens aren't all that fine. I've been mostly lurking for about six months (on and off) waiting until I had time to actually start working on my always reliable and consequently neglected '78 F-250 4x4. I've had it for 8 years and for a variety of reasons have not driven it much in the last 3 years. My truck lived in Maine for 17 years (rust, what rust?) and sports at least 4 colors of rattle-can brown on the cab. The bed is some kind of nasty Imron green wrapped around '87 sheetmetal. It qualifies as ugly but it gets the job done. I'm having trouble diagnosing an engine problem that I've had for about 3 years now. Yes, it is embarrassing but I've been busy raising babies and don't use it much. It idles rough and shudders at low rpm, especially with a load. If I punch the accelerator or get the rpm's up it quits - until the next upshift.
