Get a screwdriver (or the proper tool) and loosen the adjuster. In case you
don't know how to get to it, it's on the back side on the bottom. Remove
the rubber plug if it's still there. If you crank it one way and it gets
tight, turn it the other way. Once it is loose enough, tap the drum with a
hammer and slide the drum off. Could be caused by lack of use or the shoes
are stuck in the groove(s) in the drum. Just don't forget to reset the
adjuster when you put the drums back on. Make sure both sides are equal in
turns. Tighten the adjuster till you can't turn the wheel. Then count the
number of turns it takes to get the
wheels to turn freely with no
brake

grabbing. Then do the same # of turns on the other side. (Disclaimer:
works best with new shoes and fresh drums)

I read a few posts on vapor lock, percolation, and heak soak, and thought
I'd throw in my .02 .
We've been in the low '90s all this week. I've noticed slightly slower
cranking after shutting off 5 minutes or so. Noticable, but not a real
problem. I have a Quadrajet on a Mr.Gasket aluminum spread-bore adapter,
with a thick insulator under it, on an Edelbrock Performer. When it started,
it acted a little flooded but cleared up immediately.
I was at the junkyard looking for a few odds and ends, and found an aluminum
Ford air cleaner, off of a 400 or 460 (the guy wasn't sure, and the motor
was out) F250 4X4 about a '78 or '79 I think. (I see a Np435 NP205 and Dana
open knuckle going to my shed, (wife says NOT!!!) and maybe the PS too)I
gave him $5 for it and $5 for the shift and transfer case knobs, they were
in perfect shape and the patterns are the same as mine.
Anyway, I cleaned it up and put it on. I still need a thermal vacuam switch
and to fabricate a stove to fit a couple of tubes on the header for heat in
cold and damp weather. I took it for a long drive, kicked in the secondaries
a little, expecting the power to be off (I had an big open air-cleaner on
it) but surprisingly I haven't lost a thing. I don't know why, but off idle
it actually seems more responsive and the secondaries come in smoother. The
whole thing is a lot quieter running. I am very satisfied with the
performance, in fact I'm amazed.
I got home and shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes. Went out and
cranked it and it hit om two turns and purred like a kitten, no richness at
all. I restarted it 3 times and no sign of trouble. Today I did it again....
